Carter and Ximines

Angel Eyes : 2/22/2021 10:04 am
What do we see with them?

They're projected to be our starting OLBs for next year and we've been waiting for one or both to break out, but both have injury concerns with Carter rupturing his Achilles tendon and Ximines sustaining a shoulder injury.

Do Judge and Graham have faith in these guys? They would certainly have more than I do, particularly with Carter, who started a full season in 2019 and didn't break out as hoped (45 tackles, 4.5 sacks).
Worst pass rush duo in the NFL

Holding out hope
crackerjack465 : 2/22/2021 10:15 am : link
but Lorenzo Carter is coming back from an Achilles and I think Ximines is a backup at best.

I'm hoping carter makes a full recovery, but I think he's a backup/spot starter type of guy.
two major unknowns

entering their 4th and 3rd seasons. Carter at least showed some potential, but not sure I'd rely on him coming back at 100% immediately following an Achilles injury.
Carter Achilles

As far as my orthopedic surgeon friend is concerned, Carter has a very small chance of playing football again. Achilles ruptures, which are different from tears, have a really low success rate of returning to professional sports. Something like 80% never see the field again.

I had hope for Carter
Johnny5 : 2/22/2021 10:25 am : link
But that Achilles, we will be lucky if he gets back next season to 90% of what he was last year. He seemed like maybe he was starting to come on... but he wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire. That injury is a huge setback.

I just don't see it with the X-man. Rotational guy at best. We need at least ONE legit (and healthy) guy in one of their roles.

It used to be a career death sentence but there are many recent examples of athletes returning from this injury.
I see Carter as a solid non-star player...
sb from NYT Forum : 2/22/2021 10:32 am : link
...with little pass rush impact. His worth is in run support.

I do not think Ximines is a good player.
Carter will make an impressive play every now and then
Greg from LI : 2/22/2021 10:36 am : link
And then he'll fade back into the background for long stretches. He does just enough to keep hope alive.

Ximenes is a situational pass rush guy at best. He has skills, but is simply rather limited athletically. He is really, really slow.

guess is neither gets a second contract.
Am I right in thinking the only 2 players from the Reese era
Chip : 2/22/2021 11:08 am : link
to get 2nd contracts was Shepherd and JPP
Just goes to show

how piss poor this roster is.
What has either of them
Bill in UT : 2/22/2021 11:39 am : link
ever done to create faith in them? They're still on rookie deals so at least they're cheap, but they should both have to earn spots on the team at this point.

Odell, Aaron Ross, Will Beaty...
If Carter makes a full recovery
Jay on the Island : 2/22/2021 12:15 pm : link
I think that he could be a solid starting OLB as long as the Giants are a legit pass rusher opposite him. He showed improvement last season prior to the injury. The Giants need to plan as if Carter won’t make it all the way back which I am sure that Judge will do.

I don’t think Ximines will be more than a decent backup. He didn’t take a step forward last season when he was on the field. He still needs to get stronger so that he can contribute versus the run. He might find himself behind Cam Brown and Carter Coughlin if he doesn’t stay healthy and show steady improvement.

The Giants will bring in at least one edge rusher this offseason. Ximines will be competing for a roster spot.

“The Giants add” not “the Giants are”.
Carter looked like he had progressed a lot in training camp
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 2/22/2021 12:42 pm : link
last year. They finally had a DC that was using him correctly. Xman was essentially a one year player who then got hurt.

Given how the coaching staff was able to maximize value out of Fackrell, Sheard, Coughlin, Brown and Lalos, I have to think that both would have made progress if they played last year.

But they have to recover from their injuries.
I Don't Think You Count On Either One Of Them

especially Carter.

IF as many have speculated, Graham's defense is about pressure up the middle and the "edge guys" are more for "contain than pressure", then maybe the Giants are looking at different skill sets / body types for edge / OLB going forward.

Who are

Two guys who haven’t done anything?
Who is projecting them to be the starters? Call me after free agency

And the Draft.
It wouldn’t surprise me
eric2425ny : 2/22/2021 1:27 pm : link
If one of these guys doesn’t make the team depending on what we do in the draft and FA of course. As mentioned earlier Carter may have a hard time coming back. It’s one thing if you are an entrenched star and suffer an injury like that vs. a guy who hasn’t really done a ton his first three years in the league.

Same with Ximines, unless they see him having special teams value. He will have to show something in training camp and preseason.

Our last decade or so of third round picks has been pretty brutal. The jury is still out on Peart, and BJ Hill, Carter, and Ximines are still in the mix for now, but the last “good” third round pick we made was Manningham in 2008. That’s pretty sad when you consider 1.) Even if you pick in the bottom of the third it is still a top 100 college player in that respective draft and 2.) We have picked near the top of the third round almost every year for the last decade and have still come up empty.

Right you are and unless Carter makes a complete recovery, I think it is more likely that he will have to move inside rather than try to become a reliable Edge player.
I’d rather see

Can Brown and Carter Coughlin than Carter and Ximenes on OLB position
Surprisingly
Dragon : 2/23/2021 1:01 am : link
This team at one time was LB heaven but now they can’t draft or develop a LB to save their own lives it really is about coaching an area we’ve been greatly lacking in for decades.

Very confused about our guys demonstrating anything in practice it never seems to translate to live game action.

from either of them.
Zero expectations
JonC : 2/23/2021 8:52 am : link
both are below average. Cam Brown and Carter Coughlin look a bit more capable but none of them should preclude us from doing a thing. Those roster spots should be wide open, the talent level is below average.
