Breaking news: Panarin is taking a leave of absence from NYR in aftermath of political hit piece against him from Russia alleging that he beat up an 18-year-old girl in Russia in 2011.
Let's see the PA and other NHL players stand up for him. How about the Russian players, like Ovechkin, who are so supportive of Putin, come out in solidarity with Panarin.
do it he shouldn't take a LOA and yes people should support him - at least his right to defend himself (not sure if Russia has due process), if he did do it why the F would anyone stand up for him?
I wonder if this was leaked quietly and maybe why he wasn't drafted. I always wonder if he was really a late bloomer or if there was more to it. Not saying he wasn't just a late bloomer but this makes you wonder.

Think this has more to do with his anti-Putin stance and his support for Alexei Navalny.
I don't know whether he punched an 18-year old girl or not, but we're talking about something that happened (if it did happen) ten years ago. Why is it being disclosed now?
who (according to this tweeter) has been critical of Panarin's criticism of Putin. That obviously doesn't necessarily mean it's political motivated BS, but it is more of a connection than simply noting Panarin's opinions of Putin as a possible reason for this. link - ( New Window )

Nazarov was a goon in the NHL and now he's a goon for Putin. One too many hits in the head from Kyle McLaren.
I don't know whether he punched an 18-year old girl or not, but we're talking about something that happened (if it did happen) ten years ago. Why is it being disclosed now?
It's all perpetrated by pro-Putin goons.
If it's true, does it matter who leaked it or why it's coming to light now? Is 10 years long enough that a domestic violence assault shouldn't matter? If so, does that count to for rape and murder or just beating up a girl?
I don't know the answer, other than if it's true the way I feel is different than if it's false.
politically motivated leak or not, doesn't sway how I'd feel if a player on the team I rooted for beat up a girl.
There are like 3 things a player can do that would eliminate him from being on a team I root for (for me).
Andrei Nazarov? Good lord, there's a name I haven't heard in forever
He was a goon, and what's more, he was really bad at it. Very big guy, but mostly served as a punching bag. I vividly remember Scott Parker of the Avs beating the piss outta him.

I’m operating under the assumption that this allegation is total BS. I do question about the leave of absence though if it is indeed, false. Could be related to damage control, proving his innocence, or protecting his family...who knows at this point, I don’t want to get too much into speculation about it. All I know is it sucks for the Rangers, sucks for Panarin (if false), sucks for the fans, the league...Just F’ing sucks!

Of course it does. It shows motive. This isn't rape or murder and by the way, it's all hearsay because no woman has come out against Panarin that we know of.
if it’s true, it is of course abhorrent behavior and shouldve been
It is also fine to say that it being withheld in the first place, and then resurfaced as a cudgel of political intimidation is also abhorrent behavior.

Panarin's grandparents are back in Russia. He's extremely close to them, as they were the ones who raised him. Their safety may be in danger and Panarin may want to go back to Russia to make sure they're alright.

Motive for releasing it is irrelevant if it's true. Not sure I get your stance on this.
If it's not true, Panarin has my full support and i expect he'll have the support of the NHLPA and everyone, not just Russian athletes.
Only reason for the LOA I can imagine is to maybe get his family/loved ones out of Russia.
They don't play around when you criticize the "state" but his interview was released almost 2 years ago so the timing is sketchy. Why now?

This is coming from a notorious pro-Putin goon who probably has brain damage. This isn't coming from any woman and it hasn't been corroborated by anyone. It's a pure hit piece to slander Panarin and tarnish his reputation.
Of course the source of the allegations and the politics involved invite skepticism. But pj has clearly been asking why that would matter if the allegation is true. I don't know what kind of evidence might come out to establish that, but let's assume it did. At that point why would it matter that they dredged this up because they're pissed about him criticizing Putin. Misconduct is misconduct, and one shouldn't get a pass simply because it was a slimeball who released the information to the world.
RE: No one has mentioned that it was idiotic to come out in an interview

Then why is it coming out 10 years after the fact? And from a notoriously seedy pro-Putin goon, not the woman.
I'm not condoning violence against women. I'm questioning the validity of the allegations and I'm saying that ulterior political motives are behind this coming out now.

on YouTube against Putin and the Russian government when he still has family living in Russia and could have stuff fabricated against you or worst.
Keep your mouth shut, play hockey, make money and decide your future after your playing days whether it is staying in the US or going back to Russia.
I wish the best for him....we were all young once.
In other words, "shut up and dribble"....errr. skate?
I didn't take it that way, and I'm usually pretty sensitive to this stuff. He has a point. If you have family in Russia, it's probably unwise to go torching Putin from across the world. Chances are he's going to make an example of you or the people he can reach.
Could it be true? Sure. Looking at everything we know at the moment, though, it's highly suspect. Less than a month after Panarin makes a public statement in support of Navalny, this alleged 11 year old incident goes public. There is no woman making the accusation, but rather a nutcase ex-coach who is a loud Putin supporter. On top of it all, Panarin's reputation around the sport is sterling - everyone loves the guy and no one's ever seen anything in his behavior that would lend credence to this allegation.
No, we can't say it didn't happen at this point, but we can make a judgment based on the circumstances.
this himself. Maybe it's just that Nazarov is an unstable lunatic who bears a grudge against Panarin for personal as well as political reasons and figured this was an easy way to wound him.
that Panarin thread, I wonder if that is the genesis of some of the DeAngelo stuff.
Panarin and DeAngelo <> the same politically and both outspoken.
Maybe the Rangers felt forced to pick one and that's a no-brainer.
Might add some context and help make some sense out of a situation that didn't make a ton IMO.
Hard to draw too much of a parallel, given TDA's prior history of racist social media stuff and general idiocy. He's not just a guy who happened to express politics and got skewered by the mob for it.
is investigate this fully and clear him if there is no evidence supporting the allegation. But that does have to happen. Just because information is leaked by someone with an agenda doesn't mean it isn't true.
Hopefully an investigation can be done timely and find there is nothing to this story. I am no fan of the Rangers but would never want to see anyone accused of something like this if it were untrue. There is certainly reason to be skeptical given the passage of time, the timing of the release and the source.
RE: RE: Anakim, I'm really not understanding your position.

I'm not condoning violence against women. I'm questioning the validity of the allegations and I'm saying that ulterior political motives are behind this coming out now.
Again, I just don't understand why you simply can't address pj's point. Questioning the allegation is perfectly reasonable. He is clearly posing the hypothetical of it being true, and asking you why it would matter that this was dragged up by a jerk who may be politically motivated. It doesn't seem hard to ponder that hypothetical, regardless of how skeptical one is of the allegation.
Here are some details from a writer who translated the Russian story.
- After Vityaz lost to Dynamo 2-0, in which Panarin didn’t have a great game, Nazarov claims a then-19-year-old Panarin and other teammates were out at a hotel bar when he “sent the 18-year-old citizen of Latvia to the floor with several powerful blows.”
- -Nazarov claims Panarin was detained by the police before there was an eventual criminal case and a trial.
- Nazarov alleges that there was a bribe of 40 thousand euros in cash to let Panarin off the hook
if story is untrue. I guess it has to do with family circumstances in Russia. Looks like this season is shot to Hell just when Rangers started playing better. They need him back ASAP.

I am assuming he is intentionally raising the world profile of this so Putin does not try anything punitive (including violence) against his loved ones that remain back in Russia. But, that is just a guess.
that here we are in the year 2021 and leaders like Putin (and many others!) are allowed to run roughshod over everything and anything, just because they can.
Fucking sad and infuriating.

Most likely. Easier to squeeze Panarin's family than to pressure him directly.
