I don't know if this was ever posted as it is a year old. It is from 2019, and they were interviewing him to talk about what Daniel Jones might be going through. The interesting part was some insight on how he got drafted, the team make up at the time and his thoughts on his career.
Dave Brown on Rich Eisen - (
New Window )
Brown and Kanell managed to set expectations so low that I was stoked at a 200 yard game. In 57 games, Brown eclipsed 200 yards just 19 times. In 20 games, Kanell did it 5 times. The switch to Graham in 98 felt like a godsend at the time.
Local kid no too? He came across as a nice fellow, but unfortunately he sucked.
Reeves killed him and killed Hampton. He ran Hampton into the ground.
I forgot about that! Reeves had no flexibility. I wonder what his career would have looked like if they ran an offense that catered to his talents.
Second, his OL sucked.
Third, he really did try and although he was likely not a starting QB, he was a solid backup for an NFL roster.
I did feel bad for him. Sat near him on multiple flights over the past few years United from Newark to Chicago.
1994: 9-7
1995: 5-11
1996: 6-10
Our BEST year the last 4 years has been 6-10.

Yeah but we're on the upswing! [/sarcasm]
The comments about potentially being thrust into a game without being ready at all. The comments about Reeves forcing him to run plays that Dave knew were dead in the water before the snap.
This should really be an eye opener for any football fan that things are not always as they seem on TV from your recliner. There is always a lot more behind the scenes that contribute to what you see on the field.
I do not think Dave Brown was going to be a top QB in the league but it is obvious that he also was not put in the best situation either.
I've always wondered if Brown didn't get hurt his pec in week 6 setting the stage for Kanell to take over, how that 1997 team would've faired. Brown was playing pretty well until his chest injury and almost came back late season after we lost to the Bucs because Kannell wasn't playing that great and Fassel was right on the cusp of benching DK
Giant fans love to hate on him but he had his moments here and there. Was not only tough but pretty good on QB sneaks and keepers.
Quote:
Reeves threw away his best asset. The qb who played in 1994 was not the same qb who played in the other years. He's obviously a bright guy, he played in Spurrier's system and Belichik wanted him. Reeves tethered him to a rigid system where he wasn't able to use his best asset, he brain. Tie that to the line he had to operate behind and the receivers he had to throw to, outside Hampton, and there wasn't much that was going to come from it.
I forgot about that! Reeves had no flexibility. I wonder what his career would have looked like if they ran an offense that catered to his talents.
I remember at the time teams talking after games about how they knew what play we were going to run before we did and if they changed the D before the snap, since Brown wasn't allowed to audible his play to suit that they knew it was going to be a busted play/sack/INT/no gain.
The best thing about him is he could care less what Giant fans think about him...
And he doesn't read BBI...go figure!!
"Who's listening?"
Sorry buddy I had to because singing it the minute I saw your handle
I was in a bar in Jupiter watching a game and the fans were complaining about Dave Brown’s play. That was embarrassing because his wife was there watching the game. They had a place nearby.
However, the Giants saddled him with an awful supporting cast and a jerk of a coach who ran a dull, archaic offense. Reeves treated him like crap. He was never going to be a top QB, but under different circumstances he might have been a decent starter.
He wasn't very good. He had a soft arm, at least from what I saw of him at Albany camp. We had QB's on the Albany arena team that threw harder (yes, I was close enough to hear the ball hit Giant WR's hands back then...you could hang right by the fence, right next to the players).
Sadly, the Giants could have had Kurt Warner (who was playing for the Iowa Barnstormers Arena team), who not only had a great arm, but was the most accurate QB I've ever seen in person...He had Aaron Rodgers accuracy, and would have been amazing in Blue.
Warner was even more accurate back then before he injured his hand (he smashed his hand hitting a helmet against Hufnagel's NJ Arena team, which caused him to fumble a lot afterwards).
Kerry Collins had the best arm I've ever saw in Albany camp. Collins had a laser, you could hear the smack from high up on the hill when a Giants WR caught one of his throws.

He's apparently a very nice guy in real life.

Someome on here a long time ago told a funny story about being at a home game and seeing some kid with an old Brown #17 jersey and asking out loud "Who wears a Dave Brown jersey???" and it turned out to be one of his kids and Dave himself was standing behind him in earshot lol
I exchanged emails with Brown years ago after reading a story on his job in investing on Business Insider. I just said I'm a Giants fan and thank you for the effort in an almost impossible situation. Also said I loved when he plowed over Deion too. He responded thank you, he gave us his best effort and "PS- Running over Deion WAS kind of fun..."
:-)
Just sayin...
From all I've heard about Brown, he seems like a really good guy. Unfortunately, he was an equally bad football player.
I guess it’s like this, you can have amazing talent and get by without the effort and discipline and smarts, but not the other way around. Gotta have the talent.

We did have Kurt Warner, it didn't work out so well.
Never knew ... very informative. My impression of Dave Brown might have just changed .. and to quote Rich Eisen - "WOW".

I guess a lot of times it is not just about personal talent - has to be a good match between player AND system.
Whereas - a lot of fans just want to blame 1 person/player.
