Dave Brown on Rich Eisen

JOrthman : 2/22/2021 2:52 pm
I don't know if this was ever posted as it is a year old. It is from 2019, and they were interviewing him to talk about what Daniel Jones might be going through. The interesting part was some insight on how he got drafted, the team make up at the time and his thoughts on his career.

After leading the Giants to 6 straight Wins and a 9-7 finish that year, I really thought he was gonna take off after that but he just never settled in and stepped up like I thougt he would. Big disappointment he turned out to be

never once through for 300 Net Yards Passing. It stopped with Kerry Collins. Ahhh the good old days.....

What's even sadder about that 300 yard game drought was the team didn't even sniff a 200 yd game average over those years.

Brown and Kanell managed to set expectations so low that I was stoked at a 200 yard game. In 57 games, Brown eclipsed 200 yards just 19 times. In 20 games, Kanell did it 5 times. The switch to Graham in 98 felt like a godsend at the time.
I always felt bad for Brown.

I don’t remember any negative stories about him. He seems like a good guy, played his heart out for us, got his ass kicked over and over and kept coming back. He just wasn’t that good. It’s not his fault that the Giants scouting sucks.

Local kid no too? He came across as a nice fellow, but unfortunately he sucked.

Reeves threw away his best asset. The qb who played in 1994 was not the same qb who played in the other years. He's obviously a bright guy, he played in Spurrier's system and Belichik wanted him. Reeves tethered him to a rigid system where he wasn't able to use his best asset, he brain. Tie that to the line he had to operate behind and the receivers he had to throw to, outside Hampton, and there wasn't much that was going to come from it.
That was a great interview
jvm52106 : 2/22/2021 3:51 pm : link
and regardless of personal feeling about DB the QB, he comes off as a really nice guy. He also said something that some here criticize Jones about- being a little late on his throws. I am a bigtime Jones supporter- not gonna lie- but, hearing DB say that was interesting.

Reeves killed him and killed Hampton. He ran Hampton into the ground.

I forgot about that! Reeves had no flexibility. I wonder what his career would have looked like if they ran an offense that catered to his talents.
A few thoughts...
EricJ : 2/22/2021 4:00 pm : link
First, not his fault we decided to burn a first round pick on him.

Second, his OL sucked.

Third, he really did try and although he was likely not a starting QB, he was a solid backup for an NFL roster.

I did feel bad for him. Sat near him on multiple flights over the past few years United from Newark to Chicago.
I always thought he got a bad rap here
Matt M. : 2/22/2021 4:27 pm : link
First, as some mentioned, it wasn't his fault they spent the equivalent of a 1st round pick. Second, I think Reeves ruined his career (same as Hampton), with Young taking some blame. You have an all pro Rb and a QB with a 1st round equivalency and you field one of the all time worst OLs for several years running and no WRs to speak of, along with a TE who was limited in the passing game. Brown got the absolute snot knocked out of him every week and he kept getting back up. I really don't think anyone played harder than him on those teams.
Here's what's truly sad:

The Dave Brown years:

1994: 9-7
1995: 5-11
1996: 6-10

Our BEST year the last 4 years has been 6-10.

Who had some raw talent, but never put it together. Like others had said, he was in a bad situation and hamstrung with a coach who never adjusted to his talents. That being said, I am not sure he is a guy who would have been a star or even a legit franchise qb.

and you know it makes me like him a bit more after hearing his story. Amazing how things just turned to shit in this organization once Parcells left.

The comments about potentially being thrust into a game without being ready at all. The comments about Reeves forcing him to run plays that Dave knew were dead in the water before the snap.

This should really be an eye opener for any football fan that things are not always as they seem on TV from your recliner. There is always a lot more behind the scenes that contribute to what you see on the field.

I do not think Dave Brown was going to be a top QB in the league but it is obvious that he also was not put in the best situation either.

Dave was being polite in hindsight regarding his feelings towards DR
jnoble : 2/22/2021 5:26 pm : link
If anyone remembers, he openly voiced his dislike of Reeves after Dan got fired and was stoked that his old QB coach Fassel was hired with a more friendly offense for him to play in and better weapons.
I've always wondered if Brown didn't get hurt his pec in week 6 setting the stage for Kanell to take over, how that 1997 team would've faired. Brown was playing pretty well until his chest injury and almost came back late season after we lost to the Bucs because Kannell wasn't playing that great and Fassel was right on the cusp of benching DK

Giant fans love to hate on him but he had his moments here and there. Was not only tough but pretty good on QB sneaks and keepers.

I remember at the time teams talking after games about how they knew what play we were going to run before we did and if they changed the D before the snap, since Brown wasn't allowed to audible his play to suit that they knew it was going to be a busted play/sack/INT/no gain.
Dave is a really good guy, very smart

The best thing about him is he could care less what Giant fans think about him...

showroom in the 80s and 90s. One summer evening, Dave walks in (he was in the big dollar real estate business back then while still playing for the Giants), buys a boatload of expensive specialty lighting, then pays for it with a business check (his company address was in Cranbury). Yes, the check was good. As nice of a guy you'd ever meet.

He grew up a Giants fan and has his dream come true, being drafted by his favorite team. He tried his best but he just wasn't that good, and the fans gave him a lot of the blame for the poor seasons in 1995-96.

However, the Giants saddled him with an awful supporting cast and a jerk of a coach who ran a dull, archaic offense. Reeves treated him like crap. He was never going to be a top QB, but under different circumstances he might have been a decent starter.
I'm sure Dave was a nice guy
JohnF : 2/22/2021 7:46 pm : link
And his comments on Reeves coaching and the team in general were spot on. However...

He wasn't very good. He had a soft arm, at least from what I saw of him at Albany camp. We had QB's on the Albany arena team that threw harder (yes, I was close enough to hear the ball hit Giant WR's hands back then...you could hang right by the fence, right next to the players).

Sadly, the Giants could have had Kurt Warner (who was playing for the Iowa Barnstormers Arena team), who not only had a great arm, but was the most accurate QB I've ever seen in person...He had Aaron Rodgers accuracy, and would have been amazing in Blue.

Warner was even more accurate back then before he injured his hand (he smashed his hand hitting a helmet against Hufnagel's NJ Arena team, which caused him to fumble a lot afterwards).

Kerry Collins had the best arm I've ever saw in Albany camp. Collins had a laser, you could hear the smack from high up on the hill when a Giants WR caught one of his throws.

Someome on here a long time ago told a funny story about being at a home game and seeing some kid with an old Brown #17 jersey and asking out loud "Who wears a Dave Brown jersey???" and it turned out to be one of his kids and Dave himself was standing behind him in earshot lol

I exchanged emails with Brown years ago after reading a story on his job in investing on Business Insider. I just said I'm a Giants fan and thank you for the effort in an almost impossible situation. Also said I loved when he plowed over Deion too. He responded thank you, he gave us his best effort and "PS- Running over Deion WAS kind of fun..."

Section331 : 2/23/2021 8:45 am : link
expressing his frustrations with Reeves, we all know how hard-headed DR was, but the idea that he would have flourished in another system is ludicrous. He pushed for Fassel to get the HC job, and then promptly lost his starting job to the immortal Danny Kannell, who led the Giants to 10 wins.

From all I've heard about Brown, he seems like a really good guy. Unfortunately, he was an equally bad football player.
Great guy, wasn’t enough...
trueblueinpw : 2/23/2021 8:47 am : link
Dave Brown was a terrific company man. But at the end of the day he didn’t have the talent to be a QB1 in the NFL. If working hard and desire and saying the right things were all it took for success in the NFL then Brown would have been very successful. But you must have talent. My understanding is that nearly ever played in the NFL is talented and it’s usually the desire and study and hard work that determines much of a players career. But then there’s guys too like LT who was ferocious and the best to ever play the game.

I guess it’s like this, you can have amazing talent and get by without the effort and discipline and smarts, but not the other way around. Gotta have the talent.

I guess a lot of times it is not just about personal talent - has to be a good match between player AND system.

Whereas - a lot of fans just want to blame 1 person/player.
