Isaiah Wilson: Giants need to do their homework

Milton : 2/23/2021 2:19 am
This is a guy I loved in the draft, but of course I knew nothing of his character issues. Talk about a rough year.
Quote:
He played only four snaps during a lost rookie season that included a DUI arrest, a suspension for violating team rules, two stints on the COVID-19 reserve list and a season-ending move to the non-football illness list to work on personal issues.
Judge and Sale should get on the phone with Andrew Thomas and their contacts at Georgia to see if he's salvageable. Hey, maybe the Titans lose Jonnu Smith in free agency and accept Engram and a conditional 2022 pick for Wilson and a conditional 2022 pick (that's right, with conditions on both players).

I'm not dismissing his behavior, it's a pretty bad rap sheet and in six months time no less, but if his issues are the kind of maturity issues that are correctible with the right support, he is a legit first round talent. And he's another real young one, just turned 22 a couple weeks ago. Barkley running behind him and Thomas could be a thing of beauty.

PFT: Wilson says he's done with Titans... - ( New Window )

Most likely yes, but I'm sure all 31 teams are doing their due diligence on the guy because he was an excellent prospect, another planet theory guy, and he just turned 22. Is he a bad egg or a 21-year old who needed a wake up call? He didn't beat anybody up. Maybe he has a drinking problem like Christian Peter and Kerry Collins did before turning their lives around and having productive careers. All I'm saying is it would be great if he were one of the success stories and the Giants were the team that got him for pennies on the dollar. I'm not predicting it, just hypothesizing.
For every Christian Peter or Kerry Collins
Mike in NY : 2/23/2021 5:14 am : link
There are dozen or more Malik McDowells.

I liked Wilson coming out talentwise, but he appears to be an absolute headcase. Just because you want Engram off the roster does not justify making that sort of deal unless the conditional picks are we get a 1st rounder for sure and conditionally get a Day 2 pick in exchange for a late Day 3 pick depending on a combination of Wilson and Engram’s snaps.
The talent is enticing, but....
Vin_Cuccs : 2/23/2021 5:27 am : link
This team had to start over from the ground up. They’re trying to build something. I think it’s too risky.
I don't see it happening
Beer Man : 2/23/2021 6:56 am : link
Both DG and Judge have been working to change the attitude and culture of the locker room. I don't seem them bringing in a player who isn't a fit with what they are trying to do.
It doesn't sound like he makes football an important part of his life

Pass
If he can
Straw Hat : 2/23/2021 7:29 am : link
Be had for next to nothing id absolutely bring him in if thomas and him were close. If he shows a hint of trouble axe him immediately .
Sure, to the extent they liked his eval last year then bring him in
Jimmy Googs : 2/23/2021 7:32 am : link
and put him on double-secret probation.
if they cut him
giants#1 : 2/23/2021 7:33 am : link
I might bring him. But I definitely wouldn't give up any assets for him.

Granted, not sure Engram counts as an "asset" at this point.

Lol id trade engram for a tall boy of the worst beer imaginable at this point.
NOOOOOOO
SirYesSir : 2/23/2021 7:42 am : link

agree and disagree. 100% agree the only way the Giants should consider Wilson is if the Titans cut him. Under no circumstances should they trade for him.

Disagree on Engram - as much as we hate him on this board, if the Giants tried to trade him they would absolutely find teams willing to give up a Day 3 pick.

this board is unbelievable. Engram had some bad drops last year, so let's forget that he's got good character, great teammate, hard worker, and was 12th in the league in te ypg. He hasn't been everything the team hoped he'd be yet, but hes far from a bust, and yes, he's an asset
God no

I would like to read the backstory but I have to believe that he was
Ivan15 : 2/23/2021 8:01 am : link
Out of control at UGA too. Even if that was encouraging, I don’t think one should give up a warm body for him. Maybe an excess 7th round pick which I don’t think the Giants have right now.

Hes a total bust. Being 12th in the league at the te position in anything is nothing to brag about. Outside of the top 4 or 5 te’s the league is currently awful at the position. Theres a million players out there who would he good teammates and have good character, this guy loses us games on a regular basis. Time to cut bait.
DeAndre Baker
Dnew15 : 2/23/2021 8:09 am : link
was a teammate of his as well...

Wonder what his input on his character would be?
HELL NO
jvm52106 : 2/23/2021 8:29 am : link
he is nutcase and has completely ruined his time with Tennessee. I want no part of him.
He's a massive idiot
JonC : 2/23/2021 8:31 am : link
do not want any part of.

Gruber : 2/23/2021 8:34 am : link
Sort of headcase the Bengals would go for, or previously the Browns, though they may finally have learned their lesson to stay away from this kind of player.

Completely agree. Engram obviously has his faults, but he was the leading receiver on a team starved for talent. Sure, I'd love to upgrade the position, but giving EE up for nothing does little to accomplish that.
He seems
Juice921 : 2/23/2021 9:12 am : link
like a guy that needs to be in an extremely structured environment and have a lot of mental health assistance. The talent is there, but will any team put in that type of effort to untap it and keep him on the right path? Hard to do if he isnt willing to accept that type of help.

Agreed. I'd be stunned if they even signed him if he's cut outright, especially after Baker.

not a good sign when someone says "I'm done with football as a Titan" and they haven't even really played...

You're posting an awful lot for a 2/21. What's your previous handle?
So you want a guy who is quitting

a playoff team... yeah thats the guy we need.

Diehl was arrested for DUI too
90.Cal : 2/23/2021 11:53 am : link
Let's not write him just because of that... thing is its not just that. But yea let's add him and draft Ben Cleveland. New York Bulldog OL.
No they don't
Mike from Ohio : 2/23/2021 12:09 pm : link
He has been nothing but a problem for the team that drafted him, who also got nothing out of him.

They should be getting guys who live and die football and are hard workers. This guy's short history in the NFL scream the exact opposite.
Check out this video on him

Made in September. I really hope this young man gets the help that he needs.

Analysis of Isaiah Wilson the person... - ( New Window )
Diehl was an established pro
JonC : 2/23/2021 12:48 pm : link
who made a mistake, apples and oranges given what this kid's already put on the mistake ledger. He's repeatedly screwing up and now trying to escape his employer. Nothing but bad looks.
no way
gidiefor : Mod : 2/23/2021 2:20 pm : link
we are not this desperate - despite how some of you would approach this -- this kid is/would be a catastrophe not an asset -- the Giants are looking for, and placing an emphasis on team first players ------- this kid is a me first player, with a long list of misfires over the course of his first season
I'm pretty heavy handed when it comes to DUI charges
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/23/2021 2:23 pm : link
but it makes zero sense when you look at Isiah Wilson's season and body of work and compare it to Diehl.

The titans tried to be supportive and create an environment where he could thrive. They let him take time away for mental health reasons and he was caught partying on a boat in Miami.
very immature
bc4life : 2/23/2021 4:10 pm : link
got caught at TSU campus party, DUI, just seems like he has an idea that he can do as he pleases.

The Titans let Conklin go so this guy had a starting opportunity staring him right in the face. Started off on the wrong foot and there did not seem to be any indication that he was going to change.

Vrabel was pretty pissed at him.

and he's a 1st round pick - rookie under contract
bc4life : 2/23/2021 4:14 pm : link
so he's going nowhere. and he's damaging his marketability acting like a jackass.

Wonder if he has alcohol issues?
Maybe a more mature team can afford the gamble
TJ : 2/23/2021 5:30 pm : link
Giants are a young unproven team trying to build and to establish a strong team ethic. I could see them taking on a challenge like this if they succeed in that effort for a couple seasons first.
