Healthy 2020

Thegratefulhead : 2/23/2021 1:30 pm
Other than Barkley the team seemed healthier than I can ever remember. Am I wrong? I know McKinney got hurt, but that's a rookie. Jones was injured for a short stretch but our most impressive win in a few years came with him on the bench. Both lines were very healthy. Those guys are almost always banged up.

Was there a change in anything that this could be a result of or was it just averages catching up with us?
I don't think there's a secret sauce to injuries

Coughlin's comment about minimizing injuries followed him from the first press conference.

It's a roll of the dice. Guys get hurt when they get hit. Guys get hurt running in shorts on the practice field.
Maybe not season ending injuries

But our OLB, Slayton, Holmes, DJ, Barkley, McKinney, Shepard, Thomas, Martinez, etc. all sustained injuries that affected their play in some capacity.
Depends

I guess it really depends on your perspective. Since none of our LB's were of any significant value, it seems everyone has forgotten that we were very banged up there.

I'd be surprised if we had 2 consecutive weeks of the same 4 LB's in 2020.
if we didn't lose Barkley

it would have been a relatively fortunate season in terms of health. Even with the injuries at edge. Barkley was a killer. Any other year it wouldn't have been nearly as deadly but 2020 was the one year we really couldn't afford to lose #26, in my view.
Edge rushers

Carter
Ximines
Fackrell
Clearly

I failed to remember a bunch of these.
I think Carter was the 2nd biggest loss.

SB obviously #1.
Some perspective

In addition to Barkley, we lost Freeman who was his replacement.

We did lose a bunch of defensive backs but outside of McKinney, they weren't big names. Some had started games for us.

Overall, I think it was a pretty healthy year in comparison. There were 2 factors that probably came into play a little -

Youth
Being in contention for a playoff spot
Outside of the OL/DL/TE group

We had injuries at most levels. We were down to ur 5/6th string Edge rushers. Tae Crowder missed games. Had multiple guys take the CB2 spot then get hurt (Lewis, Williams, Harper). McKinney missed most of the season and Colbert got hurt at safety.

When you go to the offense Barkley and Freeman went down. Shepard and Tate missed time, Slayton played hurt. And don't forget Jones missing games.

The big difference is our coaching staff never made excuses for it and never really talked about it.
We lost our starting QB for a few games
jlukes : 2/23/2021 4:30 pm : link
and even when he came back it was clear he wasn't 100%

Slayton played most of the year hurt
Shep played hurt
Hernandez and Peart were never the same after covid
Martinez dealt with injuries the last half of the year

Hernandez

Wasn’t the same after Covid? Not true. He sucked this year before Covid and he sucked last year.
Losing jones sucked too

It’s possible we win one more game with jones never getting hurt. One would think he’s a better player in that cardinals game but the giants really got their ass kicked that day. Not sure it makes much difference.
