NFT: Fantasy Baseball Help: taking over a keeper league team

pjcas18 : 2/24/2021 8:44 am
I haven't been in a fantasy baseball league in a long time, but agreed to be in one with a bunch of guys from my FF league.

I know almost all of them. It's $200 entry, 12 teams so not a just for fun league.

Keeper rules are you get 3 keepers, they cost you draft round for 3 years and then the round becomes a 1st. So, last year someone drafted Tatis, Jr in the 22nd round and now he get him in the 22nd round for 3 years.

There are two "abandoned" teams so one other new owner with me. We get to pick our keepers from any roster and get the player in draft round or 12th round for undrafted players.

What I need help with is who to target as my three keepers. The other team has first keeper pick, I have overall 1st draft pick (coin toss determined that).

Some interesting keeper names:

Conforto (21st round)
Wander Franco (24th round - there are only 24 rounds in the draft)
Nate Pearson (23rd round)
Jo Adell (awful debut aside - 22nd round)
Wil Meyers (20th round)
Mackenzie Gore (19th round)
Max Fried (13th round)
Ian Anderson (12th round)
Kyle Lewis (12th round)
Arozarena (12th round)
Suarez (7th round)

And a lot of players in the 1st - 4th rounds who weren't kept, but aren't as attractive as 1st round keepers - since I can redraft one there and if I keep them I'd lose my top pick).

They include:
1st: Gerrit Cole, Lindor, Scherzer, Freeman
2nd: Harper, Rendon, Bregman, Blackmon
3rd: Springer, Marte (Ketel), Altuve, Mondesi, Goldschmidt
4th: Strasburg, Darvish, Corbin, Greinke, Machado, Jimenez
5th: Rizzo, Glasnow, Clevinger
6th: Judge, Stanton, Robles, Abreu

Any thoughts? or is it too hard to say without seeing other teams keepers (if so they are below)

Team 1 (me)
Team 2 (other new team)
Team 3: Bieber (2nd), Flaherty (4), Buehler (12)
Team 4: Gallen (7), Carrasco (10), Tucker (21)
Team 5: Woodruff (5), Devers (2), Albies (15)
Team 6: Trout (1), Xander (5), Bellinger (6)
Team 7: Ramirez (11), Acuna (12), Paddack (16)
Team 8: Kershaw (5), Giolito (12), Realmuto (15)
Team 9: Turner (2), Soto (3), Snell (12)
Team 10: deGrom (1), Story (18), Voit (22)
Team 11: Bauer (5), LeMahieu (6), Bichette (23)
Team 12: Betts (1), Robert (9), Tatis (22).

I'm thinking Conforto definitely (but the other guy has top pick).

So, I could do something like for keepers
Conforto (21)
Kyle Lewis (12)
Pearson (23)

then draft one of those 1st round players #1 overall.
Or something
pjcas18 : 2/24/2021 8:51 am : link
like Conforto, Judge, and Greinke

then draft Lindor, Harper, Cole or Freeman

or
keep Conforto, Judge and Harper and draft Cole, Freeman or Lindor.

a guy like Wander Franco is real tempting
KDavies : 2/24/2021 9:14 am : link
he costs nothing. But the fact that it is a money league, you can only keep him for three years, and the chance the Rays keep him down all this year make it difficult.

Big no on Harper. If I understand correctly, if you keep him, you lose your 2nd round pick. He has about a 2nd round value.

The player that really stands out to me is Machado at 4th round. Judge is awfully tempting at 6th as well. I think Conforto is an excellent value as well, and you would be losing two relatively high picks.

Since I would be going Machado, Judge, and Conforto, I would go Cole #1. An ace like that is key in most leagues.
Easy
Eli owns all : 2/24/2021 9:21 am : link
Conforto and Anderson no brainer. Anderson has ace stuff and I’m a Mets fan. Franco prob sits out one more full year so that’s tough. Gore you can’t keep because doubt he pitches in that loaded rotation. I’d lean Nate Pearson that way it’s only late rounds you’re losing out on. Conforto in a contract year with more help in that lineup.
Thanks
pjcas18 : 2/24/2021 9:29 am : link
for the replies, and yeah if Franco sits the whole year it wouldn't be great value, I could always just draft him and not waste a keeper spot.

Where would you draft Kelenic?

I play dynasty and not keeper
bigbluehoya : 2/24/2021 9:30 am : link
so this is a bit outside of my wheelhouse...

but I agree on Conforto and Anderson, and I think Machado in the 4th round looks very cheap.

I didn’t check who his other options were in my earlier post. Machado in yahoo is #16 rated player so you’re getting early to mid 2nd value for a 4th. Another thing to consider is 3b isn’t that loaded either. Jram machado then big drop imo.
hard to tell where to draft a guy like Kelenic
KDavies : 2/24/2021 9:52 am : link
I do dynasty as well for one league, and 13 player keeper for another, where you don't lose your pick. So, totally different.

It's hard with a player like that to pick him too high. You keep them three years. If he's in the minors a year, and then struggles a bit to adjust to the minor leagues, it's really hard. So there is unlikely to be keeper value, and there is unlikely to be value for the season.
use your situation to your adavntage now
Dankbeerman : 2/24/2021 11:45 am : link
then draft well later on for your keepers next year. Dont worry about using a 1st again next year. you will have more options, you will never get to cherry pick from every roster again.

I would keep Cole,Lindor and Freeman they cant make you give up 3 1sts therefor you probably give up your top 3 picks for 3 round 1 talents.

but if i'm losing my 1st anyway, why keep someone for my 1st

I could do something similar to what you say just keep Machado, Harper and Conforto (or pearson or Anderson) and draft Cole, Lindor, or Freeman with my 1st and then I'd still have a 3rd.

So in your scenario is:

Cole, Lindor, and Freeman and no pick until the 4th round better than

Cole (or Lindor or freeman) 1st round, Harper 2nd, Conforto 21st, and Ian Anderson 12th

but also having a 3rd round pick.
So two picks
pjcas18 : 2/25/2021 8:23 am : link
down for keepers.

He took Vlad Jr (11th round) with his first keeper (like I already knew he would).

I took Conforto (21st round)

he then took Cavan Biggio in the 14th and I then took Machado in the 4th.

So, with my final keeper (depending who he keeps) could be:

Ian Anderson in the 12th, Judge in the 6th, I forgot about Jeff McNeil in the 13th, Musgrove in the 19th or Suarez in the 7th, but with Machado I don't need Suarez.

And then I have the first pick in the draft and can take Cole, Scherzer, etc.

So, do I load up on another position player like Judge and then draft Cole.

My keepers and 1st round pick would be:
Conforto
Judge
Machado
Cole

not a bard start.

or do I swap out Judge for Ian Anderson and have two good TOR pitchers?

Basically for a keeper it's Judge or Ian Anderson and then i could draft Cole #1.
pj is this roto or points?

I think points.

H2H (6x6), weekly, and playoffs based on winning percentage.

Which is that? points?
that's option C
bigbluehoya : 2/25/2021 9:08 am : link
H2H cats.

what are the categories on the pitching side?

W / CG / ERA / WHIP / S / K's ??

Not CG, but K/BB is the 6th.

I don't play any H2H, but that seems like a scoring setup that kind of doubles-down on ratios (correlation between K's, WHIP, K/BB) which I would say de-values SP relative to some other formats.

I still think Cole is the right call at 1.1 but I'd probably lean Judge over Anderson for that third keeper.

That's a good point, thanks
No advice
Matt M. : 2/25/2021 10:15 am : link
but, that's a really interesting way to handle keepers. I like it.
Keepers wrapped up
pjcas18 : 3/1/2021 5:24 pm : link
I wound up with:
Conforto: 21st
Machado: 4th
Juddge: 6th

and I have 1st pick in the draft.

So how would you layout the 1st couple rounds?

it's 6x6 scoring (and h2h) with these categories:
Batters: R, H, HR, RBI, SBs, AVG
Pitchers: W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/BB

I like no QS and K/BB instead, so relievers actually have value.

but how would you handle the 1st couple rounds and 1st pick.

Top 25 or so players available (in no particular order):
1. Cole
2. Freeman
3. Yelich
4. Darvish
5. Hendricks
6. Lindor
7. Scherzer
8. Arenado
9. Tim Anderson
10. Nola
11. Ozuna
12. Harper
13. Alonso
14. Bregman
15. Ryu
16. Rendon
17. Abreu
18. Seager
19. Jimenez
20. Springer
21. Cruz
22. Starling Marte
23. Devin Williams
24. Mondesi
25. Merrifield
26. Y. Alvarez
27. Arozarena
28. Grisham
29. Luis Castillo
30. Glasnow
31. Strasburg
32. Fried

So, what would think about Cole at #1 and then Rizzo, Suarez (since Machado qualifies at SS), or Alonso at 24 and then maybe Liam Hendricks (RP), Greinke (SP) at 25.

Just looking at thought process here since I haven't done baseball in a while.
Just throwing this question out there
pjcas18 : 3/3/2021 12:24 pm : link
I own the #1 pick.

Gerrit Cole seems like the most likely pick.

Would you offer the #1 overall pick to the team who has deGrom?

I like deGrom more than Cole, plus I'm a Mets fan, but not everyone likes deGrom more than Cole.

Just trying to see if a) that would be a fair trade and b) if I should make the offer

If you personally like the player, I would make the offer. Is DeGrom a keeper for the team that has him? If so you may need to throw more than the #1 pick for him
