NFT: Question on router for Verizon Fios

Eric from BBI : Admin : 2/24/2021 12:40 pm
Long-story short, we've used Cox internet for two decades but we're fed up with a number of things with the company and want to give Fios a try. We just need the internet.

I'm seeing conflicting information on routers. Fios strongly recommends purchasing their $300 router (you can also rent it for $15 per month).

However, I see some articles that recommend the NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 R7000. It's half the price and the reviews say it is a better router. We currently have a 4-year old version of the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 C7000 and it has been fine for us (conflicting comments on whether not that will work with Fios too... some reviews say yes and others say no).

Does anyone on BBI have experience with Fios and these various routers?

my wife's name to get introductory savings again I decided to purchase the router, then $200 (about a year ago). I had paid $15/mnth for nearly a decade prior to that. I think the savings on the fios router alone makes it worthwhile. Not sure about alternative options.
What router is Verizon offering?
JonC : 2/24/2021 12:49 pm : link
I've read good things about Arris surfboard routers.
re: Fios

I have just FIOS internet and purchased the router from eBay at the time for like $100 to avoid the monthly rental fee. They 'require' you to use their router even if you're not using cable but I have friends who have been able to convince a tech to allow them to use their own routers. Essentially, a tech onsite or over the phone just needs to be convinced to make a switch on their side and you can us a personal router. Most of my friends that had success doing this, already had racked servers/networking in their house and convinced the tech that the Verizon router was useless for them.

Your router will work fine with FIOS. You will just connect your router to the FIOS router via the WAN port. All your connections/config will be on your personal router and the FIOS router will just act as a gateway/passthrough
It's probably a MAC address sticky mechanism
JonC : 2/24/2021 1:00 pm : link
If there's no sticky on the connection between router and CO, you should be ok. That's the first thing to check.
Reason I rent the FIOS router monthly

If I have an internet problem there is no finger pointing. It's all FIOS. One neck to twist.
Are you mining bitcoin?
pjcas18 : 2/24/2021 1:01 pm : link
If you're just a normal internet user I'd stick with what they recommend.

I am a FiOS customer and I use the Verizon router for a lot of reasons.

I bought vs rent because it because it's more economical in the long run and it's been a few years so I'm definitely in the positive.

It all works fine, and I have great upload and download speed.

This is the $300 router. It just seems pretty expensive to me.

Thanks for the two responses... I am not sure I am following you on the second response. If I don't have a Fios router, I would be simply trying to use the Netgear equipment.
Your Netgear should work
JonC : 2/24/2021 1:20 pm : link
If it doesn't, ask them to remove the sticky from their connection to the router. Routers speak IP, should be no issues with interoperation unless Verizon does something funky on their CO end.

The Fios router is following suit with Google et al offering a base router that can do it all, and an extender for larger houses and mesh wifi coverage. Looks like if you pick this router, you will be locked into using their extender if needed. Reviews are positive, looks like a solid new option with modern features.
I paid
pjcas18 : 2/24/2021 1:21 pm : link
$199, another hundred seems excessive.

but...when I had my own router when I first got FiOS (for no reason than I already had a router), they would not support it.

Any issues I had, and honestly there weren't a lot, they said they don't support my router.

So, unless $100 is more money than you want to spend for peace of mind or if you have some super router that is just so much better than what Verizon provides buying the router is usually a better decision (IMO)
It's WiFi 6
antdog24 : 2/24/2021 1:26 pm : link
but that's totally overpriced. You can get an Asus AX6000 router for the same price which will likely have double the coverage and bandwidth of their router. I would get the cheapest option, then just uplink their modem/router to a quality router and use that.

Christ, the Verizon extender is ANOTHER $200.

Problem is if I order the $150 Netgear (1,800 square feet with beamforming antennas so I don't think I need an extender), do I have to rely on the tech go greenlight me using it? (sounds like yes).

Fios internet service is incredible. I have gigabit up and down. Insanely fast.
Eric - you should confirm with Verizon
Matt M. : 2/24/2021 1:38 pm : link
but when we became customers you were not required to use their router. However, they do not support your personal router. So, essentially any issue you may have with WiFi will fall under "your router" issues. I rent mine and got an upgrade to a new model for free.

The ONT does all the work for FIOS. You don't really need a router. You can get mesh system (assuming you have ethernet running into the house) and just connect that.
You might need the Netgear greenlit
JonC : 2/24/2021 1:39 pm : link
Verizon's package for $500 is pricey, but I bet it works really well. These days you're either spending a handful of hundred bucks on your own stuff, or spending in the ballpark of $200 each year just to rent their router.

I bought Verizon Quantum router, which was the standard. I think it was $170 to buy and $10 a month to rent. When I switched back to FIOS a year ago (after 4 years of FIOS then a year of Optimum), they told me I would need their fancy new router. Well, my old Quantum still works like a charm, and I never bought a new one.
It's paid for itself many times over.

I bought a Quantum and got three years out of it
JonC : 2/24/2021 1:44 pm : link
before moving out of NYC. It's a good reliable box, but need to look at wifi coverage and extenders if your house has issues.

A huge part of my problem with Cox is that I have to call back every year to negotiate the best deal so my speeds vary per year based on the special they are running...and last year the best deal was to include their shitty Homelife crap. Worse, we have signal degradation due to their initial wiring 20 years ago but they can't find where the problem is, so say I have a package with 300 download speed, I'm only getting 1/3 of that now if I'm lucky. It sucks and they can't/won't fix it, so I'm done.

Wow... my wife just called me in to say look at this, and it was the same product you just linked to. And the last review was 2 days ago and was very positive.

Only thing I have had to complain about with FiOS is customer retention. There is little done to keep customers on board. They simply rely on their quality of service. There is not much in the way of calling and re-negotiating. Once you are out of the new customer deal, just expect your cost to go up./
Important question
Bramton1 : 2/24/2021 1:52 pm : link
Are you using FiOS for just internet, or do you also have a cable plan. I hear it gets more complicated if you have a TV/internet package.

We've been with FiOS for years, long enough that we no longer pay for our quantum router. However, we are looking to upgrade, because we're paying for 400 mbps and the speed on our devices has been so inconsistent.

Crap, that was the plan we were looking at. The 400 mbps.
The $15 rental fee is waived if you have gigabit speed

If you have gigabit service in your area, I’d recommend you go for it. If you have Verizon as your cell carrier, you’re also eligible for more discounts.

Hmmm... that might make more sense. Their 400 plan is $60. The gigabit plan is $80, but as you said the rental fee is waived (and if there are ever upgrades, they will replace the router).

I don't know if this is accurate. It would only cost $10 more a month to upgrade to gigibit, so it would save $5 if this were true. But Verizon.com says my bill would increase $25 a month.

It says router rental is included in the gigabit plan... I see nothing that says this is only an intro level deal but I will certainly ask when I call.
Eric, I'm on Fios in Northern VA
elpeces : 2/24/2021 2:56 pm : link
I have the Fios 100/100 plan. I work from home and I use the internet for TV (YouTube TV and all streaming services), there are usually 3 people watching 3 different devices at once. I don't have any issues with buffering or signal strength anywhere in my three level home using their new router. I rent it and my monthly total is $55 all in. It isn't a limited time rate and the contract is month to month. They mailed me an offer to switch to gigabit with router included for $80/month, but I don't have any issues at the current speed. To me renting the router is worth the piece of mind that they will fix any issue that pops up without blaming my router and so far there really haven't been an issues.

Thanks!
I had FIOS for a long time in NoVa...
bw in dc : 2/24/2021 3:13 pm : link
and used their router. Rarely had any issues. Loved the performance.

I moved to Williamsburg this past summer. I was hoping VZ was in the area, but as it turns out Cox is the only ISP. And their performance and service are brutal.

It's so poor I actually reached out to the mayor to get help. Somehow that has led to an upcoming "node split" and I'm praying that helps. Anyone have any insights on "node splits"? ;)

(I have read what it is, just not sure it's the solution...)

I'm also on the 100 plan, although they give me 200. Granted, I'm in a small space, but we never have issues with speed. We have 4 laptops all day with no issues, stream on 2 TVs with no buffering, in addition to cell phones and tablets. The one time we had issues, they replaced the router and problem solved.
I have Optimum here in Fairfield County. I recently bought
Victor in CT : 2/24/2021 4:51 pm : link
an EERO router at Best Buy. Cost $200. Came with 2 additional satellites that I placed around the house. Working very well, big improvement over the on provided by Optimum. I'm pretty sure it's compatible with most major providers.
I have an older fios router
56n11bestever : 2/25/2021 8:26 am : link
I bought the fios router when it was 100 bucks and then I use Orbi to boost the signal. Fios system works very well. The router limits my speed based on what it can handle but with me working from home 2 teenagers and a wife on devices and Netflix. No issues.

I would check B&H to see if the router works with fios in the q&a.
Being you aware only getting the internet
fireitup77 : 2/25/2021 2:24 pm : link
Ask the installer to terminate the fiber to the ethernet port.

When they bring the fiber into the house they will terminate it in a white box. The tech can terminate it to either the ethernet port on the box or the coax port. Being your internet only there is no need for the coax. You can then plug any router into the ethernet port and your good to go. You will get better speed this way too.

Most setups are through the coax because they need that for the tv. The "router" fios supplies is more than a router. They used to give you two devices. One that would handle the tv (your package is controlled on that device), the other a typical wifi router. They have since combined it into the one device. So if you have tv you need to use their device. You can turn off the firewall features on the fios device and use your own but you will still need the fios "router"
