Could Mike Pope help Evan Engram?

pivo : 2/26/2021 4:54 pm
Jeremy Shockey had a problem. He had the physical tools (6’5”, 4.58 40) but he couldn’t hold on to the ball - especially a ball thrown near his head. Mike Pope had an answer - they called it the Outhouse Drill. Get in a Porta-potty and face the door. The door would be opened when a pass was within a few feet of hitting it. With enough reps, Shockey became a great receiver.

The link is about Pope’s unusual methods - not the Outhouse Drill. Good read. Sorrowfully, it was written after the Giants let him go and he became a Cowboys coach.

The article seems to end suddenly. The writer prefers that you watch the videos attached.

as a great receiver at Miami. It was quite obvious he was going to great. Engram just is missing something that Shockey had whether its football instincts or concentration something is missing. Mike Pope was an awesome coach and I am sure he could have helped. He must be really old now.

But the biggest drop remains:

Shocked dropped that wide open TD pass from Collins that effectively would have thwarted any major comeback imv.

When I think of Shockey, that always comes up for me, unfairly or not..

No idea whether Pope could help EE

is a lost cause. He really isn’t a football player or a TE. Good guy, shitty football player.

My two cents on Engram...
GA5 : 2/26/2021 5:56 pm : link
He seems to mostly have trouble catching in traffic. I don't think it's fear. I just think he has a focus problem. The Giants once had another inconsistent receiver who was a high draft choice with a lot of talent. One of the things that improved Amani Toomer's game was his studying martial arts. He said it improved his focus tremendously. If I were the Giants front office, I would get Engram and Toomer together. Amani has been through a lot of the same stuff Engram is going through now, and came out the other side as one of the Giants greatest receivers. He would be a good influence on Engram and, maybe, convince him that taking up a martial art might be a very good thing.

Yeah, but did Amani ever make the pro bowl? 😎
You know what’s funny is that Bobby Skinner was reviewing
Simms11 : 2/26/2021 6:19 pm : link
how well Andrew Thomas played and was making a comment about the first game against the Steelers. The Oline blocking great, a perfect pass from Jones to Engram, like the first play, and he drops it! Engram was very inconsistent last year and really played poorly at times. Lack of concentration, butter fingers or what? Could Pope help him? Who knows, but if there was ever a guy that could, I would bet he’d be the guy.
Shockey was better.

He ran right around Roy Williams, who fell down but was going to the Pro Bowl.

Yup. Shockey cost them that game. He was his own biggest problem. Too busy having water fights with the niner fans. Idiot.
Engram's problem....
EricJ : 2/27/2021 9:50 am : link
is catching the ball. Pope cannot help with that.

He also cannot block and that is likely due to his frame. Pope cannot help with that either
Engram isn't a pimple on Shockey's ass.

Maybe instead of opening the door in that porta
eric2425ny : 2/27/2021 10:15 am : link
Potty drill they can just leave Engram in there until the game is over. That would be helpful to the team.
Not sure Pope Francis
jpkmets : 2/27/2021 10:19 am : link
Can help him. I’d think about getting Larry Donnelly to coach him up. If Engram could just learn to go airborne and land on his shoulder would really add a new dimension to his game!

Got more faith in Rick Peterson fixing Victor Zambrano than anyone fixing Engram. Cussed player who has innate skills you can’t teach, like not only dropping the pass but batting it perfectly to the DB.

He’s really just a miracle to behold (and trade)

I think he took a few lessons from Leapin’ Larry before this past season.

EE and the 2021 campaign
STLGiant : 2/27/2021 12:57 pm : link
If EE isn’t traded, he needs to be moved to “Z”. He isn’t a “Y” receiver in the Giants offense scheme, especially with a back like Barkley. The Giants need a Mark Bavaro/Kevin Boss type of “Y”. A big guy who can block like a truck at the LOS, unafraid of contact over the middle when catching a pass, somebody with great concentration and sneaky fast.

EE has speed, strength to stalk block, but not to block at the LOS. He is Ill-equipped to play the Y position full-time and makes way too much money to be just a role player. He cannot make catches in traffic and has a better chance of success on the outside with his size and jumping ability. If he cannot succeed there, the Giants should part ways. His inconsistency is not just demoralizing to fans and teammates, it’s a coach killer.
Yeah Pope

Can lather Engram up with stick em from head to toe. That’s his only prayer.

Maybe a few hours a day in front of a jugs gun would help him catch and hold on! If he misses he’ll be a bruised puppy!
