81 seems young but I guess it’s actually a bit longer than average life span.
Only Musberger is left

They were the television crew that I grew up with - still my favorite ... and then out to the game with Pat Summerall and John Madden. Sundays were great back then ... They still are but, it was different.

RIP Mr. Cross
He was solid. Also, a terrific football player.

He is imprinted in my memories of football broadcasts from the 70’s and 80’s. Enjoyed his work. Sad day.

I remember rushing the family after church as a youngster to watch that show. Great memories. From what I had read he was a heck of a player as well.
knowledgeable and likable man.

RIP Irv.
I remember the blurb
RetroJint : 3/1/2021 11:57 am : link
on one of his football cards, either with the Rams or Eagles : “One skull fracture would stop most guys . Irv has had 2!”

Apparently the injuries didn’t cause him cognitive issues. Super smooth , with an easy , relaxed delivery . If you watch video from NFL Today’s Show, you will notice how shallow game coverage was . The launching of that type of analysis began , in my opinion , with Paul Zimmerman , the football columnist from the NY Post , who if memory serves correctly, once boxed with Ernest Hemingway . But, regardless, Zimmerman’s, “The Thinking Man’s Guide to the NFL” was the book that launched critical football analysis . By today’s standards it would be regarded as sophomoric , but at the time is was the best source .

Cross was ahead of his time . He was far superior to guys like Gifford and Meredith as far as relaying what the hell was really going on out there . He did work as a game analyst before the studio gig .

Meanwhile Brent is still doing games -radio call for the Raiders , while also hawking gambling sites in Vegas .
he was a class act

Rest in Peace, Sir.

I wish there were more men in the world like him. I remember when Fox took the NFL rights from CBS, it was depressing.
