This question for some of the older members on the site:......... It always bothers me (now more than ever) that I remember something from my youth, but can't find confirmation that it actually existed. I remember Jimmy Breslin writing an article right after the 1980 USA Miracle on Ice in, I believe, the NY Daily News, where he effectively put out his hypothesis that the Soviet Union intentionally lost to the USA so that the United States would be more amenable to attending the Summer Games in Russia. I can't find the article anywhere, yet I distinctly remember it. Does anyone else remember that article? This isn't a question to bring up the merits or lack thereof of whether the Soviets actually did that, just whether or not Breslin actually wrote an article hypothesizing it.
The only point that possibly contributes is that the best goalie in the world was pulled early, but who knows what those arrogant clowns were thinking.

Did Herb Brooks actually say that, or just Kurt Russell?
Quote:
Just watch the Soviet coach in the 3rd period ... he was exhorting his players who were swarming all over Craig ... and then he was thoroughly dumbfounded not knowing how to deal with Herbie’s magic ... Like Herb said, 99 times out of 100 they beat us, but not tonight ...tonight is our night.

Herb Brooks actually said (his speech is memorialized in the rink in Lake Placid - and well documented) - it was not invented for the movie:
You were born to be hockey players—every one of you, and you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it!"

Something else I found that I thought was interesting is that Breslin and other members of the NY print media were granted persona non grata status in Lake Placid.

Was it your first trip there? Mine was last year Thanksgiving (2019).
I went to the rink as well, obviously.
I was there for my kid's tournament.
There was a family skate on the gold medal sheet, and we had one of our games there too. Seeing my daughter score a goal on the same ice that USA beat Russia almost had a tear come to my eye, lol.
Just a great, indescribable experience.
It is so hard to picture that village hosting an Olympics. I read they are trying to get another one (as part of a group of other cities I guess), but I can't see it working in this era, but who knows.
I also went to a World Cup luge race and climbed up the ski jump practice apparatus...so cool.
I'd go again in a second.
Happy to help, not a problem at all. I'm always nosing through old newspaper archives. :-)

It was incredible to see. The stadium was smaller than I expected. Went to see the museum as well.
I didn't get to skate on the ice. Hopefully next time.
They have this pond tournament every year, I'm hoping to make it an annual trip. It was the best trip I've been on.
I heard the same about them trying to get another Olympics.
and they were including all of New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut in their counts since they figured they could use some venues there.
I see no way that tiny village could host an Olympics in this era.
But at the luge track one of the locals told me the governor approved 100 million dollars of infrastructure funding with the goals of hosting another olympics, so we'll see, but I'm very doubtful.
I loved all the pubs, taverns and small restaurants and shops in that small downtown area, but we were there for a Can/Am youth hockey tournament and the place seemed beyond capacity. No way could they support an Olympics and I'm awed they were able to even in 1980.
We had great food everywhere we went.

I can be wrong about this, but I have this distinct memory of my tour guide telling us that Lake Placid was the last Olympic Winter Games where every event was held in one location. If you think how small Lake Placid is, you just cannot even begin to think what an incredible achievement that was (if I am remembering what he said correctly which is iffy).
We had great food everywhere we went.
Same here.
I even loved the skills competition (mainly because we won the gold - and my daughter was one of the 4-person team for us), and our goalie won Silver, but I felt like everything CAN/AM organized was very well done.
Oh, yeah, there isn't even a small chance the story was true.
The blow back that team felt in Russia at that time was massive. This was soviet era Russia, it makes Putin era Russia look like the Boy Scouts.
offered - I find this EXTREMELY hard to believe for reasons I don't want to start typing about now because I am lazy.
"that the Soviet Union intentionally lost to the USA so that the United States would be more amenable to attending the Summer Games in Russia.
And I was a JB fan ... but that statement is ridiculous.
Not unlike what we hear any time a gambler loses and wants to claim the outcome was fixed (IMO).
but not a shred of truth to it, not even a tiny shred.

+1 ... lol
Anytime someone makes fun of their own post (#coolstorybro) - it will always crack me up.

Pj- the original post/thread says this ....
where he effectively put out his hypothesis
I must admit that was what I was responding to. I do see now further on down that he was quoting someone else.
But, why even do that ....?
not looking to argue. I know it is hard sometimes to communicate through just text alone and some texts can be misinterpreted in their intent.
I was in no way defending the story, it should never have been written or published.
but it also has no claims of validity, just a man who lost a longshot favorite bet making unfounded claims.
not like Breslin is alleging some conspiracy, he's writing a shitty sour grapes story.

+1 ... I think we agree on this. : )
