@RapSheet

The Washington Football Team is expected to part ways with QB Alex Smith in the coming days, sources tell me and @KimJonesSports. The AP Comeback Player of the Year has said he still wants to play, and at age 36 may have a chance to do so.

He's a good story. I wish him the best.
Alex Smith

would be a better backup QB than what the Giants currently have on their roster.

Just sayin....

Sign him if wants to back up. He could help Jones.
Considering what he said the other day, not a surprise

Smith was from the old regime, and it sounded like the old coaching staff wasn't expecting him to return at all.

Wonder if they plan to build around the kid who started the playoff game. He did better than expected, but it was one game. Would seem like a really WFT thing to do, putting your eggs in a basket with hardly any experience and seeing it fall flat.
The guy is as tough as nails
BillT : 3/1/2021 11:00 am : link
But another injury to that leg and you would have to worry about his health for the rest of his life.
They won’t run with that guy.

Who do they bring in? Cam? A rook?

And it's not even close! I'd sign him at the right dollar amount. No questions asked.
Wow, they must really feel confident they can get a decent QB

Why should he play?
DavidinBMNY : 3/1/2021 11:18 am : link
There is going to be less $ to go around this year. He has more then enough $. He has a great family, a successful career, and he made it back from a horrific injury to the level where he could actually play in an NFL game.

He has nothing to prove. Yeah he's not a hall of fame player, he hasn't won a SB but I don't see that changing unless he came off the bench for a championship team.

A man has a very limited time to play pro football. Smith loves the game and wants to do it as long as he is able to.

Agree 100%, the issue is: Does Smith want to be a 2nd string QB, at a back-up salary, or does he want $$ and a chance to start?

As much as we might want him, he may be seeking a bigger opportunity.
WFT has a good defense

with potential to be elite. I think they try to get a QB via trade and go for it over the next 1-3 years.
Kick the tires...

oh wait - don't kick the tires...

Good luck Alex.
Didn't the injury threatened his life?
Grizz99 : 3/1/2021 11:30 am : link
I would pass, no matter the skill level. I I would tell him, " time to move on buddy and that's in your own self-interest".
No
AcidTest : 3/1/2021 11:32 am : link
interest in Smith. What a story. The guy almost lost his leg, had 17 surgeries IIRC, several infections, and still returned to play. But he has no mobility, and is too much of an injury risk. He's also likely to be too expensive.
The guy proved he can still play at a high level.
Giant John : 3/1/2021 11:50 am : link
If I’m running a team I would not put him on the field in a game. I want to part of putting him in a position where he could be hurt and exposed to additional injury to that leg. For me? Sorry Alex but no.
Makes sense, they need to get first round pick Haskins playing
ZogZerg : 3/1/2021 12:12 pm : link
Oh wait....
If he wants to play

and still can, who is to tell him he shouldn't. He knows more than anyone the risks...
I think they're fine with Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinecke ...
FStubbs : 3/1/2021 12:21 pm : link
... but they'll probably go for someone like Fitzgerald too.
Maybe he'll rejoin his

I would actually be happy to have him as Jones' backup. I've always been a fan of Alex Smith plus he is also well respected in the locker room.
Alex Smith > Colt McCoy
81_Great_Dane : 3/1/2021 2:03 pm : link
Agree with the above; if he's willing to be a backup, and the money works, he'd be a good signing. Jones probably will miss a lot more time than Eli did, for whatever reasons. You need someone who can come in and lead the team and play capably for a few games a year. McCoy wasn't really that.

As for the injury, yes, his life and his limb were in danger. But he's already played and shown he's recovered.

I don't think he's a great candidate for a starting job. Maybe the Pats as a stopgap or "bridge" QB while they train up the next guy.

Same in... San Francisco. Wouldn't that be ironic.
The real question is
Grizz99 : 3/1/2021 2:34 pm : link
What does Washington do for a quarterback. They are, most surprisingly, in a win-now situation. Chase going into his sophomore year and a very good and mature front four. Cousins, RG3, Haskins and now Smith represent a huge investment with almost no return.
It's like they built a ship and forgot the rudder.

Their current plan is probably "Trade for one, draft one." Interesting that they don't want Smith to be their bridge to the one they draft. Wonder who they think they can trade for.
I don't want Smith anywhere near the Giants.
Ron from Ninerland : 3/1/2021 3:13 pm : link
He's a smart veteran QB, but at this point in his career he is at best a "good in the room" type. Physically he was never that good. He never had a great arm and he can't throw on the run. Flush him out of the pocket and he'll either throw the ball away or run out of bounds. Now at his advanced age he can't even move around in the pocket and he's brittle.

If the Giants want to upgrade from Colt, they'll be better options.

Smith is definitely better than McCoy IF, AND THIS IS A BIG IF, he has a pocket to throw from. He's not a guy you want behind a bad OL at this stage of his career with his injury.

If the get FitzMagic with that defense, they will have the edge in the East IMO
