Gregg Rosenthal; Around The NFL Editor
Leonard Williams is ranked #4. Get out your pocket purse John Mara.
According to Gregg Rosenthal"
"Giants GM Dave Gettleman was right. Unleashed in an attacking scheme, Williams was one of football’s best interior linemen last year and is about to be paid like it."
Dalvin Tomlinson is ranked #34. He won't come cheap either!
"If you need a consistent big body to anchor the middle of your defensive line, Tomlinson is a fine choice. Guys with his size and strength inevitably get huge dollars."
No other Giant is on the list, but it pisses me off to no end to see Romeo Okwara at #31. Not because I wish the guy ill-will. But rather, some not-too-bright exec on the Giants (or maybe several) didn't have the smarts to realize what the team had in this still young player.

He was healthy for the 2018 camp under the new administration and was immediately on the field for the Lions after being picked up on waivers from last cuts.
ER Trey Hendrickson - 6'4" 270. Had 13.5 sacks last year for the Saints.
TE Hunter Henry - the Giants were high on him in the draft and now he's available. 26 years old.
RT Daryl Williams - signed a 1 year, $2.25M contract with BUF last year. Started all 19 games and was solid in both run & pass blocking. Is this the McK signing we need?
ILB Jayon Brown - Speedy, productive ILB from the Belichick tree. 26 years old.
WR T.Y. Hilton - Not a long term signing but a guy that can get Jones "right". 31 years old. Looked like he had plenty of juice last year.
WR Cordarelle Patterson - sign him as a return specialist. Or do we want another Dion Lewis-type?
RB Duke Johnson - good 3rd down RB which is a big need on this team nobody talks about. Lewis should be gone. Johnson is 27.
RB James White - see above.
I think think LW and DT are.
Would also be okay with one of the Tight Ends on this list if they are able to release Engram before his $6M pay becomes guaranteed.
but seeing Justin Simmons consistently regarded as one of the best in the business always reminds me of Reese picking Darian Thompson instead of him in round 3 in 2016
3rd round picks and later are a roll of the dice, we know, but I recall several people here preferred Simmons at the time
I am not a big supporter of a huge deal for Williams (nor another tag), but seems way too harsh to suggest he would be a waste. He certainly has the frame and skill set to be a very good player in this league, but there are risks and questions to put that much money into the DT position.

Give me Leo, Dalvin and one or two of the edge rushers to go with them... then draft a cornerback, some receivers and some more OL.
I don't get this line of thinking at all.
We've been back and forth on LW - we don't agree - that's cool.
But you want to throw top $$$ resources at a guy that is often injured and/or doesn't want to play?
I'm not interested in that - I"m also not interested in moving Andrew Thomas off LT and you don't pay T. Williams to come in and play RT.

give Trent a big two year contract rather than waste a massive four year deal on Team LW.

Williams didn't want to play for WFT. Can you blame him at the time?
He played 14 games with the 9ers I think both games he missed were because of COVID...??
Look, the guy is an 8X Pro Bowl player who is one of the top five LTs in the game. We still have an OL issue. Why not rent TW for two years, let AT cut his teeth more at RT, and really fortify the OL at the bookends?
Seems like a reasonable plan to me to address a bigger problem...
I think buying a vet T is a good idea.
Trent Williams has played all 16 games twice is in his 10 year career. I don't care about how many pro-bowls he's made (the Giants have a Pro-Bowl TE I complain about all the time).
This is not Andrew Whitworth (the guy that got away)...this would be the definition of throwing money away - there's literally nothing reliable about this guy - pass...and it's not even a hard pass.

There is a risk - true. And I wouldn't mind a cheaper plan of going for Daryl Williams to play RT.
But TW is a monster when he's on the field. And my plan would be only for two years, so it 's not like we'd be making this major long term investment.
It's academic because it's not going to happen. But the over-arching point is trying to get more bang for the cap buck - at a major need (OL) - then spending on LW after one great year...
I totally agree with you bang for your buck comment. Something the Giants have really struggled with in recent years is paying top dollar for players that don't produce top results...that trend actually ended last year... with one player...
We have a young OL and should keep a budding DL together.
I don't see us getting a #1 WR in UFA so perhaps Waddle at #11 is the right pick. We shall see...
Lots of people on BBI want players to sign for a discount..well...because their fans of the team and want them to retain good players AND be able to go and find new players to sign in FA that they think will make an impact.
Unfortunately, that usually not the way it works.
LW is a player that has just shown that he CAN put up numbers like an elite top 3 IDL in the league - the number of IDLs that CAN do it - is very small. That ability alone is VERY expensive.
He was healthy for the 2018 camp under the new administration and was immediately on the field for the Lions after being picked up on waivers from last cuts.
He's had two pretty damn solid years - out of three - in Detroit. 7.5 sacks in '18 and 10 in '20. Only 1.5 in '19. So not sure what happened there.
Basically Detroit has paid him only $7M over 3 years for some good pass rushing skills.
Looks like another miss by Resume Dave...

I would probably be happy with this, especially if we can land Surtain (and as long as Judge/Graham want Dalvin back for whatever price he'll command). The only thing about this is we'd have to really hit on a WR in round 2 or 3, which won't be easy. Our main need is a true #1 WR, not another mediocre cat, so that's the only thing that worries me with this possible plan. DJ needs a go-to man on 3rd down... if he has nowhere to go with the ball on 3rd down it's going to be another long ass year.
