NFT: Rangers / Sabres - Chytil's back

Back to Igor in net. Kakko is expected to come off the COVID list, but still has to go through protocols and won't be available yet. No timetable for Panarin.

If I’m not mistaken, you are a Montreal fan. I read an article recently that asserted Claude Julien would be a good coach for the Rangers. I always thought he was a so so coach, but the article made some good points about his team excelling on the offensive end at 5 on 5. If you show up on this thread, I would appreciate your thoughts, or anyone else for that matter. I like Quinn, but it’s time IMO.

LOL. I'm watching the Rangers for 50 years that I can remember and the one constant is that they are never physical enough.

Did you like Vigneault? He's very similar in style to Julien.

They both got their start coaching together in Montreal under Mario Tremblay (maybe the worst coach in NHL History).

Biggest knock on Julien is young players struggle to gain ice time with him since he focuses so much on defense (centers especially) so he regularly puts veterans with no upside out there in place of giving young players valuable experience.

If you're team is a contender that's a fine philosophy to have (as long as you're winning) but when you're picking top 10 it doesn't make sense to keep running Nate Thompson out there over Nick Suzuki.

Anyway, Julien definitely knows how to coach at the NHL level, he'd be an upgrade over Quinn IMO, but how he'd fit with the Rangers youth is a question I would have. Maybe since there are not contention goals or aspirations this year he'd help develop the youth, but once that shifted (like most coaches) he's going to play the players he knows won't make the mental mistake that leads to a goal. Even if that mistake is very valuable to the players development if you know what I mean.

I know. As much as I can’t stand John Tortorella, I think I could live with him being our next coach to get some physicality on the roster.

He does have his strengths, very Keenan-esque. He'll straighten them out and demand they play his style, but he may wear out his welcome before they can win.

Great stuff, I appreciate it. I fully acknowledge Vigneault is an excellent coach, and knew he’d make Philly an instant contender because of their talented roster, But if Julien is cut from the same cloth, I agree he’s not the right fit for the Rangers.

Bones : 3/2/2021 2:50 pm : link
Agreed!
Nice to see Chytil return and Kakko likely back this week
ShockNRoll : 3/2/2021 3:07 pm : link
The Rangers are really teetering on the edge of essentially being eliminated. Their long winning streak this year is 2. If they're going to get back into this, they need to go on a 5 or 6 game winning streak. I'm just not sure I see them having that kind of consistency. These last 2 games are case in point. Dominating impressive win Friday, absolute turd Sunday.

Regarding the coaching situation, Julien would definitely be an upgrade over Quinn. I think the Rangers' next coach will be a more established guy like Julien, maybe even a reunion with Torts, Gallant (though he seems pegged for Seattle), Boudreau (I really don't like him, but I actually don't think he'd be a bad fit here). It still chaps my ass that the Islanders signed Trotz the same offseason as the Rangers signed Quinn. I don't want to blame everything on Quinn, but I do think he is going to limit how far this team can go. In other words, I don't see him as a Cup winning coach, and my guess is once he's done here in NY, he'll probably return to college. For now, I just want to see the Rangers keep things interesting. I'm sick of year after year, my teams playing for draft position by the midway point of the season instead of playoff position.
I like Torts
pjcas18 : 3/2/2021 3:32 pm : link
more than Julien, players want to run through a brick wall for Torts....until they don't. but for that period of time that they do, you see effort like no other team in the league IMO. They just keep coming at you in waves in many cases bridging talent gaps with effort.

And he's not afraid to play anyone. If you're going to demonstrate max effort consistently you can fit in with Torts - if you make mistakes you will hear about it (just ask PLD) - but you will get a chance.

At least that's how it seems to me, as someone who is a hockey fan, but has never rooted for a team Torts coached.

I think CBJ would be making a mistake firing him.

I really can’t imagine
Bones : 3/2/2021 3:36 pm : link
Trotz being a good fit here. His style of play would more than likely have stunted Kakko and Laffs scoring output..... Oh wait. The thing is, none of the so called available coaches seem like inspiring choices. Maybe the Hurricane coach will break free after the season. I think there was a Swedish coach trying to come to the NHL to coach as well. The King could be his assistant.

Anyway I guess I shouldn’t have hijacked the Chytil thread. He really looked like he turned the corner this year, I just hope he’s not going to be too fragile.

Laviolette
pjcas18 : 3/2/2021 3:44 pm : link
would have been interesting IMO.

Did a lot with relatively little in NSH.

Both Lavy and Trotz are near the top of my list of good coaches and both went to Rangers division rivals.

what are your guys thoughts on Gerard Gallant?
Drewcon40 : 3/2/2021 3:52 pm : link
would the Rangers go the young coach route again or do you think they go with experience? I forget where I read it but I hear Wolfpack coach Kris Knoblauch is well regarded.

I agree that when this team is ready to take the next step, it will likely not be Quinn as the head coach.

I remember in 03-04
ShockNRoll : 3/2/2021 4:03 pm : link
when the Rangers promoted Tom Renney to coach when Joel Quenneville had just been fired in St. Louis. You have to give Renney some credit, as he took a team after the lockout that many people predicted would be the last place team in the entire league, and they had a 100 point season, and went to the playoffs each of the 3 years after the lockout, but Quenneville is one of the best coaches in the league's history. Who knows how it would've played out, but whenever Rangers coaches are discussed, I always think back to how pissed I was that they didn't hire Quenneville back then.
Gallant
pjcas18 : 3/2/2021 4:06 pm : link
is a weird case to me.

Exceeded expectations in FL and then gets fired the first sign of adversity. Makes it seem like they were waiting for an chance to fire him.

Surprised me.

Massively exceeded expectations in Vegas. I thought post expansion draft Vegas would be worst team in history bad. I loved their D, was meh on MAF, but I thought they had 4 3rd lines and that would be a problem for them. Well, Gallant had 4 3rd lines playing like 4 1st lines and they went to the SCF (lost to the Caps). Would have been miraculous for an expansion team to win a cup.

Year 2 early exit from the playoffs, but made the playoffs.

year 3 first sign of adversity they dumped him.

So, again seems like from the outside they were looking for a reason to fire him.

He's rumored to be the first coach of the Seattle Kraken next year, so not sure he's an option if the Rangers were to fire Quinn, but I'm not sure why he's one of those coaches who seems to be fired in the midst of success.

thanks PJ

the other news item that scares me is this Eichel talk. I understand the Rangers weakness in the system and across the team is quality depth at center. I hope the Rangers sit this one out. I want the Rangers to hold on to Lafreniere and Kakko (I will admit their draft position does influence my feelings). I also would like to hold on to Fox and Miller.

Is now the time to make such a trade? I know Eichel is 24 and is a first line C but I would hold off - unless we can pull a miracle Brassard or Gomez trade.
I understand the
Bones : 3/2/2021 4:41 pm : link
Eichel concern, but I think they can get him a bit cheaper. Without trying to piss Pj off, I’d like to see us sign Denault for 4 or 5 years. Start him off at 2C. Hopefully Chytil can win 3C job. Keep Strome around for 4C and RW. Can you win a cup with those 4 at C? I guess it depends how young guys turn out.
....
BrettNYG10 : 3/2/2021 4:45 pm : link
Rangers have about seven guys I think are near untouchable, even in a trade for Eichel: Lafreniere, Kakko, Miller, Shesterkin, Lundkvist, Fox.

IMO, the smartest route would try to three-way Zibanejad to another team, send those pieces to Buffalo, and then add pieces.

Players, even elite ones, become available with more frequency than most think. I think there's a decent chance McDavid demands a trade in a year or two, too.
I want to trade Danault
pjcas18 : 3/2/2021 4:46 pm : link
so I'm fine with it and he'd be great on the Rangers.

Solid, shut down C. No offense though so he's miss-cast as a 1C in MTL.

I would get Eichel if it can be done without losing Lafreniere, Kakko, Miller or Fox, no other untouchables for me if I were the Rangers.

He's a legit 1C.

Eichel
Bones : 3/2/2021 5:01 pm : link
Could be had for Lundkvist, Chytil, Strome, and a first. They might have to take DeAngelo as well. Maybe we get an additional piece or two. A lot to give up but I’d consider it. I’m pretty sure Lundkvist would be a must for them.

Brett, seems shipping Zib out now in the throes of a dry spell, albeit prolonged, would be selling low, no? I don't know if it's Cvv19 or what, but this would be a pretty low point.

As far as Eichel goes, I'm with you in including Lundqvist in that list. As noted, kid has a howitzer from the point (likes to set up just about where Panarin does edge of the right circle (from keeper perspective), and goes both ways. Rangers need goal scoring, from wherever it comes.

Dunno if any of you listened to Valiquette in the PG: normally I find what he says reasonable intelligent (even if from Rangers' booster perspective) and agree with most. Last night he panned the Sabres play and effort, as if they had already quit on the season. What I saw last 10 mins of 2nd and most of 3rd was Sabres outplaying the Rangers decisively, 70 of play in Rangers' end. Rangers 3rd and 4th lines badly outplayed in neutral zone back checking ineffective. It did not give me a good feeling going into the games vs NJ and Pitt.
I don’t know

How to tell you this, but to get an untouchable (Eichel), your gonna have to trade 2 or 3 (nearly untouchables) from Brett’s list. If you don’t, then that’s fine.

Eichel is great, but I just...can't. Don't want to trade Laf, Kakko, K'Andre or Fox. I'd trade Kravtsov and even Lundkvist, but the aforementioned 4 I wouldn't.

Yes, he'd still fetch a nice return but I wouldn't trade him NOW because of that. I don't see any way to acquire Eichel and keep Zibanejad.

I do think Zibanejad should be dealt prior to becoming a FA.

I suspect you're right unless Eichel whittles his teams down to 2-3. I'm not even sure he has a NMC.

Kravtsov, Chytil, Schneider, and a first (or two?) might get it done.

I don't know if I'd do it.
Eichel
pjcas18 : 3/3/2021 8:44 pm : link
NMC kicks in after next year (before 2022-2023 season).

I think the Rangers can get him without giving up Lafreniere, Kakko, Fox or Miller.

but it would be something like Georgiev, Chytil, Lundkvist, and a 1st or something like that if it matches up.

Steep, but if he's the missing piece for the Rangers I'd do it. Not sure.

Chances are good that whoever gets Eichel will win the trade.

I've heard incredible things about Lundkvist. I like Chytil more than most, but he's probably a 2C long-term, maybe one of those plus 2C guys.

If the cap didn't exist, I'd do that deal in a second. But you really need cost-controlled players to win Cups. Especially when the Rangers have $29 million or so tied up in Panarin/Kreider/Trouba.
And thanks for the NMC detail.
BrettNYG10 : 3/3/2021 9:00 pm : link
.
I guess Kreider/Trouba/Panarin is closer to $26.
BrettNYG10 : 3/3/2021 9:02 pm : link
Panarin was cheaper than I remembered.
Somehow the Pens
pjcas18 : 3/3/2021 9:04 pm : link
made it work with Crosby, Malkin, Letang and MAF, the Blackhawks with Toews, Kane, Sharp, Keith, etc.

The Lightning with Kucherov ($9.5M), Stamkos ($8.5M), Hedman ($7.875M), Vasilevsky ($9.5) not to mention Point, McDonagh, Palat, Tyler Johnson and Gourde all over $5M with term.

I think they can do it, but need to get contribution from draft picks - just not sure the time is right.

Those other teams I mentioned were contenders, if the NYR are it's a no-brainer, if not, it's a maybe.

Should see him in NY in 2021 unless by signing the ELC now it includes a slide to get the 4th year. I don't know if that's how slides work for an ELC that doesn't start this season.

NY #Rangers signed Braden Schneider, the 19th overall selection in the 2020 draft, to a 3 year ELC that starts in 2021-22.
Interesting

doesn't sound like there is any slide option, I just don't understand wasting 1 year of an ELC on the AHL, juniors or NCAA IMO is a better option for most players IF and big IF they'll be there for the year.

Braden Schneider's ELC will begin next season, no matter what (as @PuckPedia

if he doesn't make the roster. I'm told being loaned back to the WHL isn't an option. It's NHL or AHL.
