Jabrill Peppers

JoeyBigBlue : 3/4/2021 11:08 am
He’s set to become a Free Agent after next season. Do you think he gets re-signed or do they let him walk with McKinney in the fold?

Peppers improved tenfold last season under Graham. He finally seemed comfortable in the safety roll. He was a sure tackler and also brought leadership to the Defense. His coverage skills improved but they are still below average to average at best.

I personally think they will let him walk. With Ryan signed to a big deal, and McKinney showing potential to be a really good starting SS, I think we can’t afford to keep him.

Deal should not be prohibitive to the long term outlook on Peppers. He's on a short term deal and Peppers is still very young. Plus it feels like Graham is playing three Safeties quite a bunch. He likes the versatility a player like him brings. He could be brought back, and how much remains to be seen. The cap will raise once a new TV deal strikes.
He is more a nickle Lber.....Crowder is his competition, imo

Also depend on what type of edge they get....and his asking price. Graham must love is diverse skeme fit.

I just don’t think you should be allocating 20 mill plus on two safeties. (10 mill plus each) Especially when you have a pretty good safety on a rookie deal.
if he duplicates 2020
UConn4523 : 3/4/2021 11:19 am : link
he will likely be here long term. Option two is the Transition or Franchise tag.
Maybe....At times this year he was impactful!
edavisiii : 3/4/2021 11:21 am : link
If they can get a 2nd corner ...that moves Love, McKinney and Ryan to full time safety work and allows Peppers to come down as a LB/Safety Hybrid that he excels at. At times he flies around like a missle and at times he looks lost!

He is also an excellent punt returner. But, how he plays this year will determine if they try to resign him. I sat there watching the draft last April and had to ask, "If the Giants could have known how bad Cleveland was going to be in 2019, would they have taken Peppers or insisted on two first round picks instead for OBJ? We have 1 year left with Peppers before he is a FA. We could have had the 2nd #1 for another 4 years....yes, hindsight is 20/20!
where does the idea
KDavies : 3/4/2021 11:31 am : link
come from that the Giants chose Peppers from Cleveland in the OBJ deal, rather than a second 1st round pick?

But the Giants could really have a dominant secondary next season they draft Surtain or Farley at 11

LCB Bradberry
RCB Surtain II/Farley
Nickel Darnay Holmes
FS Ryan
SS Peppers
Rover McKinney

That’s a really really good secondary IMO.

Agreed, I think we’re going to see a lot more of Ryan, McKinney and Peppers on the field together.

I think Peppers is part of the future and worth a new deal
Who knows what the Giants will do
rasbutant : 3/4/2021 11:47 am : link
However, if I were GM, I would decide right now if he is part of the future or not. If the answer is yes, then I try to extend him now. Typically when player sign before they get to FA they sign team friendly (structure not overall cost) deals.

However the safety position is a little different because the tag value is so low.

I'm looking at it as he is under contract for:
2021 6M (option yr)
2022 11M (1st TAG)
2023 13.2 (2nd TAG)
All 1yr deals, so that is roughly 30.2M over 3yrs with 30.2 guaranteed through roster bonus each yr for a 10M/average.

A comparable I think would be Budda Baker. Who signed an extension with the Cardinals in 2020.
He signed a 4yr extension for 59M, 10M SB, 33M G, Avg of 14.75M/yr. Keep in mind that it is backloaded.
His CAP hit in the 1st 3 years are
2020 3.75M
2021 7.75M
2022 14.75M
if cut after 3 yrs Dead CAP = 7.55M
Add that all up and you have = 33.1M total for 3yrs service
You basically then have team options in 2023 @13.1M and 2024 @14.2M.

So looking at the 2 options over three years they are roughly the same 30.2M on the TAGS and 33.1M on a long term deal. The long term deal, makes for a happy player and CAP flexibility for the team.

So long story short, if he is willing to compare himself to Budda Baker than a deal makes since, but if he is looking for Landon Collins money, get ready to play on the TAG Mr. Peppers.
we've got a lot of cap in 2022
UConn4523 : 3/4/2021 11:49 am : link
so a long term deal is in the cards. The tag is attractive though, especially since we won't have the cap constraints we are facing in 2021 (and why tagging LW again is going to be difficult).

A few opinions
UGADawgs7 : 3/4/2021 12:01 pm : link
1. Ryan deal I believe has an opt out after year 2 with $1.5M dead cap hit which isn’t really anything.
2. They can always tag him
3. Ryan won’t be here forever and you don’t opt to keep a 30 year old who will be 32 at the end of his deal vs Peppers over a 26 year old long term.
4. Peppers had his best season under Graham. The way Graham uses his Safeties, he lines them up in many different packages. Peppers can play some LB as well and rushes the QB. Would see if they can give Peppers a 3-4 year deal in the $10M range. Cap should go up next season and they should sign a bunch of 1 year prove it deals this year and see who sticks.
My guess is he gets tagged
ZogZerg : 3/4/2021 12:09 pm : link
He fits really well into this defense and has many hats.
The Giants will want to keep that.
He is a NJ guy
George from PA : 3/4/2021 12:43 pm : link
Which might help keep him here
May be another Landon Collins scenario
Danny Dimes : 3/4/2021 12:51 pm : link
I love peppers swag, he brings attitude to the defense which is what it needs. Hopefully he eont ask for an outrageous deal but they have cap space next year, it all depends on how he plays this season
Giants need to be a little careful with Peppers actually.
chick310 : 3/4/2021 12:52 pm : link
His play after the first month or so was very much improved, but that was also a telling sign of really how poorly he was playing out there as well.

Peppers is still also a noticeable liability in coverage and is often targeted by opposing QBs. So you know that Offensive Coordinators are seeing it plain and clear and are prepping for it in games against the Giants. See the comments in the last game review by Sy versus the Dallas Cowboys.

There was a lot of good things coming together with his game in 2020 in terms of discipline, recognition and speed. But I would like to see much more in pass coverage before anybody starts throwing around terms like "franchise tag" in connection with Peppers.
it all depends on his asking price
GiantsFan84 : 3/4/2021 1:20 pm : link
if he's looking for top of the market money then no. but if he can be kept for a reasonable deal then yes
Nobody can answer this question yet...
EricJ : 3/4/2021 1:41 pm : link
we have a whole season in front of us with so many other factors going into that decision.

If they like him enough they can extend him now and lower his cap number for this season. I don’t think they will though. I’m guess they let him walk and maybe get a comp pick for when he signs somewhere else. (Assuming they don’t sign other big name Free Agents of course)

This, he’s a good fit for this defense and can play multiple positions.
The move I most expect vis a vis Peppers is an extension to his contra

soon which keeps him in Blue another 3+ years AND frees up 2021 cap space.

Have no idea how much they might be liberate for the 2021 cap.
Contract.

He and McKinney are the long term future S of this team.
Peppers is a supreme athlete

you could switch him to running back no problem. There is a spot on the roster for him regardless

They should extend him and try to lower his cap hit this and next year in the process.
