So Netflix recently added 'Dances With Wolves', which won Best Picture at the 63rd Academy Awards. I watched it earlier...yeah, it's a good film no doubt, the visuals are stunning, & it's got a good-if completely unrealistic-plot. But it's not Goodfellas, which I watched last week for like the 765758th time.
I don't remember if there was a lot of debate back in '90-'91 over this, but to me this was highway robbery.
What the fuck is this world coming to? I can't believe this. A Jew broad, prejudiced against Italians.
Struggle? Nope.
But it is a film rooted in origin, identity, with strong commentary on race and gender. It’s not an entirely different type of story than DWW — outsider is taken in by a culture he revers. Some are hostile, some are welcoming. The outsider ends up on the frontline defending those who welcomed him against the power structure.
I don't know what the point was of showing it at all.

rating it above The Godfather is way out of line.
But I have a sentimental weakness for many posters on BBI, as you can see. They talk when they should listen...
It is fair to rate Goodellas above The Godfather. I do. It is wildly original and modern. By comparison The Godfather lumbers along. It is amazingly sarcastic and dark. And very little humor in The Godfather.
Yes much less humor than Goodfellas. But that’s not what they were going for with the script, don’t you think?
The first hour or so of Goodfellas I would put up there with the most entertaining set of movie scenes in last few decades.
The Godfather is just pure gold from start to finish...
I agree completely. I also think Goodfellas, as mentioned above has pitch perfect humor peppered in.

I never felt Hill was an outsider watching Goodfellas. He was a street smart kid who the made guys took a liking to. That’s it. There are likely 1,000 Henry Hills.
Ah yes, the white man's favorite bogeyman. The big bad "liberal media".
...and white men have historically been oppressive, the media didn't make that up. Sorry if that offends you.
Oh wait...white conservatives dont get offended right? That's just whiney lefties right?
Casino I like as much, if not more.
That was to LakeGeorge

The real reason is because of political correctness and the liberal Hollywood agenda. A gangster movie that has been done many times before (albeit not with the same skill as Goodfellas) will NEVER win out against a movie that glorifies the minority struggle against the oppressive white man. There, I said it.

I didn’t say that it offended me. I just said that that’s why it won. I’m not a conservative or a liberal. Relax. Everybody is so uptight nowadays.

I mean, the media are garbage, on all points.

yea ok.. move along..
Yup I love all 3 and as others have mentioned probably watched Goodfellas more often, but Godfather 1-2 are on a different level.
Goodfellas is easier to watch. Godfather is more an investment, especially part 2. It insists upon itself...
