Why is Nobody Talking about Kadarius Toney at 11?

mittenedman : 3/17/2021 8:39 am

I'm late to the party here. I hadn't researched Toney. In a word - Holy Shit.

You wanna shift into the fast lane? Lots of guys have World Class Speed in the NFL. Toney's got great hands, route running and an almost Ahmad Bradshaw-like tenacity on the field. The kind of ferocity he plays with bring a tear to my eye. Lightning fast and just refuses to go down. What a weapon! You usually don't get this kind of skill & aggressiveness wrapped up in one package.

He blew the stack off Alabama's CBs too. Check out the video. The problem is - it was just this year. He came back Senior year and was an animal. A scary beast. Looking back on this draft a few years from now, I can easily see Toney being top 5 in this class. Given the nature of what we're hearing about teams being "all over the place" with their draft boards this year, he may just end up there.

If he's available at 11? You have to strongly consider. There better be a damn good reason you don't want this guy. For those who haven't seen him, treat yourself to the link below. He's got 1 of those hour long highlight reels. I ask sincerely - is he really inferior to Smith, Chase & Waddle?

And Happy St. Patrick's Day to my fellow BBIers!

they don’t have to do with anything - I’m just saying this is a top 12 NFL draft pick. I want this pick to be all about football. And he might be - but he seems to have a lot of other stuff going on
He seems like a different kind of guy for sure.
mittenedman : 3/17/2021 9:12 am : link
He reminds me of Janoris Jenkins a bit, personality-wise. But that doesn't mean he won't be a great NFL player. I didn't know about the gun charges.

On the field, I don't see why Waddle (for example) would be considered a better player than him. Toney is a very special talent. Looks like he performed well against Tennessee too - I wonder what Pruitt has to say.

Why wouldn't this gun incident be an issue for the Giants? I'll give you 2 reasons:
1) DeAndre Baker was charged with a gun crime. I'm not saying he did or didn't actually do it, but he's no longer a Giant because of it - a wasted 1st round pick.
2) Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself due to recklessness with a gun. He cost us a legitimate shot at repeating as SB champions.

I'd say these are 2 legitimate reasons to give the Giants pause about drafting this kid at all, let alone ahead of where he's slotted to go. That all said, this is the first I've heard of his "incident". I would love to have Kadarius Toney on the Giants if they do their research and feel picking him won't be a mistake. The kid has some serious talent and will only get better at the next level. I just don't see any way they take that chance.
The concerns about his rap career are real
KDavies : 3/17/2021 9:51 am : link
scouts are concerned he is more passionate about music than football. Similar concerns there were about Rosen: that he has other passions

You don't know your asses from your elbows but want to sound like educated draft experts. I bet most of you said #6 was too high for Daniel Jones too. WTF is the difference when a team has a conviction on a player that they prefer. I can see if a guy is just not worth a day one or day two pick compared to the guys ranked ahead of him but Kadarius Toney is as talented as any receiver in this draft. It is a matter of preference. Splitting hairs with total conviction based on being in line with current draft projections is just playing it safe. It's ridiculous. If the Giants draft Toney at 11, 18, 25, or 42 it makes no difference. Value is in the eye of the beholder. If we draft him at 11 as our 3rd or 4th ranked WR and you guys all crap your pants over it I will be laughing because I believe that this guy is the #2 receiver after Chase. The Alabama WRs wouldn't be ranked that high if they went to some other school. Get real. Toney blows them away.

Bernie Williams had (and no doubt still has) a passion for music and that didn't stop him from having a great sports career.

I would understand that concern if Toney was a QB (like Rosen) because complete decidation to football is a requirement to become a top NFL QB. But it would seem that a WR should be able to focus on music in his spare time and still be successful as a football player.

If the "gun issues" drop Toney to 42 and the Giants have checked him out, I'll take Golladay and Reddick in FA... along with Surtain or Farley in Rd 1 and Toney in RD 2.

Conviction on a player is great, but only if your convictions actually pay off enough. And the NY Giants won-loss record over the past decade would suggest they haven't.

Or maybe they don't have as many convictions as you think.

Accuses others of wanting to sound like draft experts, while trying to sound like a draft expert. I will put a wager on Toney NOT being the Giants pick at 11. He'll probably be a 1st rounder, but it will be a late one.
I disagree Jim
KDavies : 3/17/2021 10:24 am : link
and I really like Toney as a talent. There are serious concerns when there is a WR that is more concerned about making a name for himself than playing winning football. Bernie was a rather reserved person who played acoustic guitar.

I’m not saying I would exclude Toney from consideration because of his own interest in rap, or the gun issues, but they are certainly things that need to be vetted by a responsible organization. The same people saying it’s nothing would be ripping Gettleman in a couple years for ignoring red flags if Toney wound up with an OBJ sized ego, or wound up getting in trouble like Baker.

It’s also one thing to take a chance in the 2nd round. You can’t miss on the #11 pick
We only have 6 picks

in this year's draft. We will not reach for a guy who has questionable decision making skills, especially regarding loaded weapons.

I absolutely think KT can play his ass off & would love to see him in blue. It ain't happening unless he falls. Similar to the Mario Manningham situation where we drafted him in the 3rd.
i'm sure he's a talented dude

This guy has NFL playmaker written all over him. His tape is super impressive. Great instincts, great hands, and runs thru tackles. I was not aware of all his issues but I believe he has more NFL talent than Pitts or Waddle.

As some have already mentioned, the lack of production with Paye is a bit concerning. Also, he’s a prototypical 4-3 DE. Not sure if he can stand up in the 3-4 to match Graham’s scheme.
Most of the dossier on Toney...

has been discussed above. But he's unquestionably a first round talent. And I like his body type much better than Smith's at the next level. So from a talent perspective a case can be made for him at #11.

However, his character is a knock. And you just can't make high investments with those question marks.
Great player with red flags
Gfan in PA : 3/17/2021 10:53 am : link
Honestly I did not know about this guy and the highlights are impressive. Love his quickness, routs, and mostly the tough YAK breaking tackles and fighting for every yard. This guy ain't going out of bounds unless someone makes him.

Unfortunately those links posted above about guns are going to hurt him. I do think they were when he was freshman/soph so maybe he has learned his lesson. Seems to have a little diva in him too. I think all this puts him low on the Giants radar which is a shame cause I think he is as good or better than Waddle/Smith due to his toughness and build. I haven't seen footage of Smith taking hits like these.
Curious what Sy thinks. Seems like a polarizing prosect.
Giants Fan in Steelers Land : 3/17/2021 10:54 am : link
I've read knocks that he struggles to get out of breaks and he was a late breakout (that seems to matter for WR).

There's easily 7 receivers at least whose draft profiles I like a lot more. So no way in hell at 11
I just don't see a reason
Dnew15 : 3/17/2021 10:55 am : link
for the Giants to stay at #11 this year.

You have to have a team that wants to move up...but this HAS to be the year that DG finally does the right thing and trades down...right?

People are dinging Smith for lacking elite speed, what about Toney? Granted, it was HS, but he ran a 4.69. Many are killing Surtain for running a 4.57 in HS.

I don't see a #11 pick regardless of other issues. A 1st rounder, sure, but no way would I take him so high. Davonte Smith is light years better.

Curious hearing from someone who followed closely (I dont watch college football)... is there an explanation why his production was so low his first 3 years?

That is sometimes a red flag but also can be explained in other cases.
