The 1983 Giants went 3-12-1 under a first-year coach named Parcells, who would have been as good as gone if George Young had been able to get Howard Schnellenberger’s signature on a contract. Schnellenberger coached 22 more years at various coaching outposts and won double digits twice — the same number of Super Bowls Bill Parcells won over the next seven years.
(The beginning of 2 of the best years of my life) - he was the head coach. Jim Kelly was the QB and Jim Burt lead the defense.
I used to see HS walking around campus once in a while - smoking that pipe.
He really was the beginning of a Dynasty. If you watched the Billy Corogen's(?) documentary on the "U" - it tells you (in a comical way) on how Schnellenberger was like the 1st head coach "not afraid" to go into Miami's inner city and recruit the talent that lay in wait.
Great coach. Hope The U starts to rebound and get back into the mix as a national contender. They are good for college football...
That is true BW .. they are good (were) for college football but, I think there days as a powerhouse is over. At 1 time they were a surprise because (for whatever reason) - other colleges were afraid(?) to recruit down there. Not anymore - the secret is out - has been for a long time. At one time they were a gold mine that was the property of south Florida ... now the whole country knows what south Florida has to offer.

Played for Bear Bryant and then coached with him for three National Championships. Then with Shula at Miami and a Super Bowl. On to Miami where he started it all. Imagine if he stayed....
On to Louisville where he won a Fiesta Bowl and then started the FAU program from scratch.
How this man is not in the college HOF is a travesty.
To the current U situation, I think a big part of the problem are the facilities. They still have a little of the U factor for recruiting but there are a lot of other college programs with a better conference, far better facilities and even better history imo.
I started going to Canes games in '79 and was a regular till '85. Fun time to be a Canes fan, still am because of Coach Schnellenberger. Those teams he coached were so much fun to watch as a kid.
His achievements there are kind of overshadowed because of the greatness of Jimmy Johnson and later the two national championships won by Dennis Erickson, but Howard was one of a kind

came when I was a student at Colorado. In 1995, CU was 4-0 and ranked #4 in the country, but had lost Koy Detmer to an injury against Texas A & M the previous week. Oklahoma, coming off a disappointing 1994 had hired Schnellenberger to take over for the fired Gary Gibbs and he had the Sooners at 3-0 and ranked #10 going into a matchup against the Buffs.
Before the game, Schnellenberger came out and said, "I would prefer Detmer play. Our football team would prefer Detmer play. I don't want a damn asterisk when we beat their ass."
CU beat them 38-17 and backup quarterback John Hessler threw for five touchdowns. Great memory.
RIP.
