Kenny Golladay vs the other WR FA acquisitions

Jim in Forest Hills : 3/27/2021 11:31 am
This is not a statistical deep dive, just a contract $ vs the player, projected impact on the team. Do you see a better value than Golladay? A bigger potential impact? I could see a case for Allen Robinson, JJSS for $8M? I think Robinson is a better version of Golladay so I'd say that's one. Do you think Godwin will outproduce Golladay? Is there another set of moves you would have made in lieu of signing KG?

Sammy Watkins really has been a disappointment.
Robinson was never an Option

Golladay was the one guy that could make an impact for the Giants. The Giants really had to land him, and they did.
Desean Jackson signed with the Rams,

Not the Chargers.
New England did exactly...

what I campaigned for - grabbing WRs in that second tier. It got a little pricey with Agholor, but he and Bourne were the two WRs I thought could be good value as a package.

And the price for JJSS is a real bargain. Durable, tough, willing blocker, and he's more versatile as a receiver than generally acknowledged.

We overpaid for Golladay. But it eliminates a vital need for Jones. Now Golladay has to play big and Jones has to step up.
I don't buy the notion that we overpaid for Golladay.

We can talk about the one year offers but that isn't an average over the length of the contract. Teams had very limited cap space this offseason so what teams can fit Golladay on the books and take a cap hit of 18 mil? Not many. But if you want him to sign a long term deal you have to pay. If you wait then that number can bloom. Just look at Leonard Williams. The cap is supposed to increase dramatically over the next couple of years. Getting him locked up now was very important imo.
One year deals should not be used as comparison
George from PA : 3/27/2021 11:58 am : link
As all good WR will have massive jumps next year.

C.Davis is closest....kind of a wash.... slightly in less $$$$ for slightly less player
Robinson for Golladay money would have been a better deal.
Ivan15 : 3/27/2021 12:31 pm : link
Smith-Schuster and Marvin Jones may be the best bargains.

The previous Bills regime traded two (!!!) 1st round picks and a 4th round pick to move from 9th overall to 4th overall to draft Watkins. Ooooffff.
KG = Plaxico
PhilSimms15 : 3/27/2021 12:45 pm : link
I keep reading about the comparisons but if KG makes even 75% of the impact Burress made, he will be well worth the dollars.

Jones desperately needs a WR and/or TE or can use size and physicality in the red zone.
No

NFL team thought JuJu was worth $13+ mil a year. He averaged under 9 yards per catch this past year and has gone down each year he has been in the league. Is he good? Solid, but he has not proven to be successful without Brown in there. Golladay is better and more dangerous all around.
Robinson really didn't hit the market and

and the Bears still went after Golloday --

seems to me Golloday on a multi year deal is better than Robinson on a one year deal for continuity purposes
Curtis Samuel: Signing a three-year deal worth $34.5 million.
rasbutant : 3/27/2021 9:39 pm : link
That’s a good contract for and up and coming player. But for what the Giants needed. I’d take Golladay with the slight overpay over all those.

Those 1yr deals are great also but not what this team needs, let grow together and build something.
Great data but I think the prudent thing would be to wait

to see how things play out over the next couple years before a decision can be made about bargains and smart signings...

No...?

They also overpaid too. The TEs have to be part of your critique and they got 2 guys who don’t have elite attributes and are being paid a ton compared to their peers.

Our overpay comped with big upside, the Pats doesn’t. And I’d argue there’s just as much risk given Henry’s durability and Agholors extremely suspect production history.
