about 5 years ago that put a bunch of "glass"(?) in the atmosphere that caused flight delays for about a month?
Officials were worried about debris clogging up the engines.
They have to cut that shit out.
In 2010 there was an eruption that caused the largest shutdown of air traffic outside of war/emergency ever. It was followed up by another eruption a year or so later that shut down more flights over an extended period. I don’t know if any more recent ones have gotten there since in Iceland/Europe.
I happened to have been in southern Chile during their 2011 volcanic eruption that shut down all motor travel across the lower part of S. America/Patagonia, and air travel for a while thereafter. We were able to cross the border by foot and get to Buenos Aires via Patagonia by bus a couple days later. Talk about a time you wish you had a mask...
Beautiful video and a technical achievement. The ambient temperature between the ground station of the drone and the lava must be insane. The batteries in these drones are tiny bombs. I wonder what, if any, extra protocols were taken when they flew over the vents and crater...

Here is an interesting story about the drone and the pilot. I thought this would be an outfitted drone that had thermal protection... apparently not.
When Ólafs flew his drone back to his takeoff location, he noticed that it did not emerge unscathed. The light under the drone was melted, and sensors were damaged from the extreme heat. He reports that the drone still works, but the vision sensor underneath no longer functions and gives constant errors during flights.
Even if it is still able to get airborne. If it melted the downward sensor (which controls return to home and some obstacle avoidance) and other pieces on the outside, I can’t imagine the internal battery damage.
Bravo to the pilot/videographer. I hope DJI Care comes through and replaces it for him!

+1
Very cool video
So, I guess it was another volcano I was thinking about.
Excellent footage for real though.

I dont think I have ever of risotto causing GI problems. Haha.

Believe it or not, that was 11 years ago already (2010). I was stuck in London for an extra week.
