Matt from Connecticut is on the line. What's up, Matt?

Klaatu : 3/28/2021 1:36 pm
I don't think anyone really expected Matt Peart to get much playing time last year. Drafted late in the 3rd Round (#99 overall), about where most pundits predicted he'd go, he was generally viewed as a good developmental prospect, but by no means close to a finished product. A year away (at least) from actually being able to compete for a starting role. Still, a good investment by the Giants.

To his detriment, he did not have the benefit of a full offseason program. No doubt that stunted his development. However, for a variety of reasons he was pressed into service prematurely, appearing in eleven games with one start. To be kind, the reviews were mixed. But, honestly, what else would you have expected? He even had to deal with Covid late in the season. "Sometimes I wonder which side God is on.

I hope there are no lingering effects from his bout with the coronavirus. I'd like to see what he can do at full strength, with a full offseason of preparation under the tutelage of his new position coach. This is one investment the Giants desperately need to pay dividends.
He looked so good at times

that many fans were calling for him to play lt and move thomas to rt. I think that he’s gonna be just fine, and i really don’t get any of the negative critiques he’s getting right now. Far exceeded my expectations for what he could do as a rookie.
Guarded optimism here

I hope he can start and hold down this position. They have Solder to back him up. None were signed here during FA, so I think they know what they have here, but the draft is deep at OTs. I'm starting to believe that JJ wants his OL to be home grown (played only for the Giants) as the right side of the OL is up in the air right now. It is my #1 concern for the team this year. I hope and pray that another OL goes to the right side in first two rounds.
He was very impressive prior to COVID

once he returned he struggled noticeably.

I am hopeful that he will be a good player for the Giants as he played very well especially for someone who was very raw.

Hopefully he takes a big step forward in his development this year after a full offseason getting stronger and improving his technique. Regardless I would still like to see the Giants add another OT in the draft especially if Walker Little falls to the Giants in the 3rd round.
Matt Peart developing into a plus player at Right Tackle
Jimmy Googs : 3/28/2021 2:08 pm : link
would be immensely beneficial to the Giants future.

Simply from a perspective of not having to turn to Solder this season at all if Peart can take the next step. But also not having to invest free agent dollars or an early pick on another Offensive Tackle in 2022 would be great. Letting the focus go towards improving the interior part of the line, and just ensuring a relatively cheaper but reliable swing tackle is somewhere on the roster.

Quite frankly, he couldn’t be any worse

then Fleming! In fact he was pretty darn good at times. He’s got good length, moves well and is athletic. He needs a good off-season weight program to build strength. I’d be shocked if he didn’t pan out. Might take another full year of development, but he definitely looked like he was coming along last year.
Agree with Straw Hat

He showed real potential. Edsall, his college coach and someone who was on TC's staff in Jax seemed very confident he would be a good player but needed a little time.

Marvelous I agree about Judge wanting to get a successful pipeline and ultimately mostly drafted OL players. I think this a huge part of the Patriot success. They let a lot of lineman leave via FA and have replacements ready or draft more. The best position group to control costs imo.

reading when you said Hart and Flowers were going to be good as late as 2017.
Now you throwing in the next guys, well, cause their the ones there.

They desperately need multiple draft picks on o line.
Expectations for Peart were 2020 developmental yr
Payasdaddy : 3/28/2021 3:01 pm : link
We all no he was projected to need a full offseason in weight room and was considered raw
2020 he had some pretty good moments, some not so good
got his feet wet for sure
I expect him to progress nicely this yr. gun to my head I think he plays pretty well this yr to set up 2022 maybe him and Solder alternated like judge likes to do Solder probably can help him quiet a bit too
Peart looked better (in spots) than flowers or hart ever did
Payasdaddy : 3/28/2021 3:04 pm : link
hart never showed me anything tools wise
flowers occasionally did but must times I hated how he played for gmen
improved as an OG but I am glad he is gone
you can see Pearts tools and athletism when he plays
1 yr of coaching and weight room before any real judgements should be made
JMHO

He is a dice roll. Nothing more.

Dice roll is hardly an apt term here. A guy picked in Rd. 3 has been well researched, not a name picked out of a hat. Being a bad bet is a possibility, tho
hate to seem lazy with comps but he was like a better Will Beatty
Eric on Li : 3/28/2021 3:13 pm : link
from day 1 they both had obvious tools and despite being considered developmental stepped right in successfully. I think he is going to be a solid player for a long time. Doesn't have Thomas' power and doesn't have any elite tools, but he has some true LT tools and loved seeing him handle both left and right last year.

I think they are very fortunate to have 3 players on the roster who can credibly play LT if necessary. Most teams have at best 1 or 2. Just need to figure out the guards.
Peart Started Strong
OntheRoad : 3/28/2021 4:00 pm : link
but developed a problem with the outside speed rush just like Andrew Thomas did with the speed move. Both players seem to have the physical gifts and coachability to correct these problems.

If you're talking to me, don't. For one thing, you're a liar. For another, you're a douchebag, and I don't debate douchebags, I just heap scorn and ridicule on them. (See the point on top of your head).

will be able to physically get the job done as he did often before he had Covid. Being able to make the right choices on assignments in pass pro along with the others blockers on his side of the line will be the determining factor as to whether he is a long term success. Go UConn!
I understand that Covid Vaccines
Angus : 3/28/2021 9:33 pm : link
can help with long haul effects for those who have had Covid. Maybe the vaccine can help Matt Peart and Will Hernandez? I guess the approach is to do only the first vaccine and refuse the second. Somehow that works better.

Wear the other team down. Beat them up all day. Beat them into submission and make them want to quit.

George Young brought us the planet theory: There are only just so many big guys out there. You can find the smaller guys all day long but the big guys who can really play are rare. If you have two guys ranked dead even you take the larger of the two; they are harder to find.

I remember 88' & 89' when Young spent his top two picks in each draft on Offensive Lineman. It was only after that that we chose Hampton, Bunch, McCaffrey, Derek Brown, Aaron Pierce, Dave Brown, etc.. ; after we'd reenforce the O-line with T-John Elliot, G/T-Eric Moore, C-Brian Williams, and G-Bob Kratch. LG-William Roberts was drafted as a Tackle in the late 1st round in the 84', RT-Doug Reisenberg stuck as 6th round pick in 87', and USFL standout C-Bart Oates was the only "suburbanite" to stick and start in both the 86' & 90' Super Bowl wins. Oates held of the much bigger and stronger Williams, our 89' 1st round pick for several years until he left to play for San Fran.

I would love for Gettleman to spend our picks on the Offensive Line and at TE & RB.
I would love for us to trade down, possibly even twice. I want to Target the toughest linemen and two way TEs. Towards the end of the 1st I'd like to draft T/G Teven Jenkins, whom I think is just a nasty dude who can play RT or RG. Then on day two I'd like to maneuver in order to draft TE-Pat Feiermuth, C/G-Landon Dickerson, G/C-Quinn Meinerz, and TE-Hunter Long. On day three of the draft my targets would be NT-Alim McNeill, RB-Rhamondre Stevenson, and DL-Tadarrell Slaton.

This would be a great draft in my book. This would help us become the tough, physical team the coach and GM have been trying to build.
