With the release of Godzilla vs. King Kong I thought this would be fun. Lots to choose from.
I might be an old fuck but I still think the originals are the best. So best would be:
Godzilla - 1954
King Kong - 1933
I think they hold up.
But dark horse for me is:
Shin Godzilla - 2016 - a Japanese reboot of Godzilla. It's gritty and tense. And worth checking out even if you don't like these movies.
And an old cheesy favorite is Destroy All Monsters - 1968. Loved it as a kid.
Original Godzilla with Raymond burr is pretty terrifying
Loved the music
Be watch Godzilla vs Kong tonight
Rooting for Godzilla but I dig this Kong. We know Kong is winning. Hope he doesn’t kill Godzilla
Gotta check out shin Godzilla. Heard it was good
Yeah. At 57 I am like a 12 yr old again , watching HBO max tonight
Wife enjoys enough to watch too
I will be watching this stuff if I make 90

Well you absolutely must see Shin Godzilla if you are a fan of the genre. It turns it on its head a little and takes a neo-realistic approach to the proceedings. Also the first CGI Godzilla from Toho, I believe.
I couldn't sleep the other night and I watched Godzilla vs. Gigan. Wow... WOW was that bad.
The original Godzilla was legit. They really went off the seas of cheez deep end after King Kong vs. Godzilla.
Oh of course I loved every single one when I was a kid, for sure. War of the Gargantuas was always a favorite as well.
He was dopey as hell looking, no way Godzilla wouldn’t torch him
And lighting just conveniently strikes him when Big G is laying waste to him
Still pissed about that
I wonder why my wife says I have a hard time letting things go :)
+1 What's not to love about a movie where female aliens take control of Earth's monsters and manipulate them to destroy the Earth. My only quibble is that they didn't include my favorite monster, Gamera the turtle.
This new group of movies is fun. They’re not perfect by any means but they get the vibe of the Toho movies pretty much right.
Agree on that 1998 Godzilla. Absolutely terrible. One of the best decisions was not to use that end scene for the obvious sequel they were hoping for.

Ha really? I didn't hate 1998, but I didn't look at it as a real and true Godzilla movie. I guess that's why I was able to tolerate it...lol
Yep that was War of the Gargantuas. That was one the best ones for me.
If it's available, I might just sign up for a month subscription to watch Godzilla vs Kingkong, Snyder release of Justice League and the new Mortal Kombat movie (I know it'll suck but huge fan of the video game series) in April. Those three films would be worth the $14.99 price tag for just one month.
Kinda turned me on as a 10 yr old
Explains alot!
there was some kind of callout, i forget, but 3 of us went.
it was fun. we were like 14. tried to find us in the closing credits but its blurry. i recall they poured karo syrup for blood on the giant fake beast laying in the plaza. one of us took home styrofoam broken tile. no CGI those days.
different world in so many ways. :(

Ha cool. I saw that one in the theater with my pop when I was 9. I cried my eyes out when Kong dies. I can't watch any of the Kong movies after that child trauma... lol. Pathetic I know. Prolly why I liked Mighty Joe Young so much... lol. Nah scratch that MJY kicks ass.
Gargantuas they were bros. Green one lived in the water and ate peeps. Brown one lived on land and was a friend to peeps. I don't want to give the rest away... lol
1963 On Mt Fuji - ( New Window )

No it’s on right away plus a bunch more other stuff. Big movie will be matrix 4 in December

I'm team Godzilla too, and yes that lightning ending pissed me off.
She now knows I am not alone!
HBO max has a lot of Godzilla movies in their que

I seem to remember that the real version had Godzilla winning, but was re-written for the US market (hence the stupid lightning). Does anyone remember this?
Haven't gotten around to pulling it up. Thanks in advance
The best Kong in my opinion is the original 1933 version. Ground breaking special effects by Willis O'H. Brien, along with Max Stiner's incredible score for the film made Kong a massive hit that's still impressive even today 88 years later!!
VARIETY: Is there a good case to be made that Steiner’s music for “King Kong” in 1933 is the most important film score of all time?

This is not your parents' Godzilla, the 1956 recut with Raymond Burr inserted as American interlocutor, a paragon of western stoicism with his boxy suit and pipe held aloft like a talisman. The Japanese original is far darker and more seamless, a topical fantasy of uncommon power. It may not be a great film, but it is an important one, a surprisingly sombre meditation on means and ends, on when exactly the price of peace becomes too costly to pay.

Agreed on all counts. Great info.
The effect on audiences back then was electric, much like the original 1977 Star Wars movie, which used much of the same formula...incredible special effects and a magical score by John Williams.
Loved that one too. Mighty Joe Young as well as the two originals
Its basically the end of the Monsterverse but just a good flick.

Word, I watched it last night, it kicked fucking ass. Loved it!
After watching G vs K, we (27yo daughter and I) immediately put on Destroy All Monsters as that was my favorite as a kid. It did not disappoint although it was the first time seeing the Japanese audio/English-dubbed.
Question: Wasn't Godzilla in one of the other Japanese series back in the day? Either Ultra Man or Jonny Socko? I have a vague memory of that as a kid.
Best scene was when Godzilla had Kong down, with his foot on his chest. Kong had a look like he was defeated and had nothing left. Then when Godzilla roared at him, Kong showed spirit and roared right back. The look on Godzilla's face was that he had a bit of respect for Kong for not giving up and then left him alone to die in peace.
Loved the action. Will watch again, like multiple times
So by my count Godzilla killed KK twice in this movie. Both times he was saved by the US (and the 2nd time by shocking his heart back). Then of course
they team together to fight the evil mechanical Godzilla.
Its like the WWF, they just won't let Godzilla win officially. He's the GOAT of Monsters!
It’s the best of the new ones by far. Watched them all this past week and there’s a wide gap between them. King of the Monsters stunk and the newest was really good for the first hour and was pretty bad in the second half.
