NFT: Are fans as biased as we think?

BestFeature : 4/5/2021 6:36 pm
I'm making this an NFT because this is a general question. Recently I read that if we were Eagles fans we'd think Jones sucks. And that got me thinking. Fans of other teams (not even rivals) never care about context or nuance. For example, do Giants fans care that Sam Darnold has played on one of the worst teams in the NFL his entire time in the league? No. We'll likely just look at the stats and record and say that he sucks. But fans, while sometimes inappropriately rationalizing a) have a bigger picture watching all games and b) are much more likely to look at nuance and context. I see this with the Rangers and Kaapo Kakko as well. I think sometimes fans are LESS biased. Also, I guarantee you that Giants fans have a lower opinion of Evan "Pro Bowler" Engram than most non-Giants fans. Not only are fans more accurate, they're more honest.

I got a lot of non-Giant fans telling me how much of a stud Rueben Randle was because of stats alone. I just rolled my eyes.

Perfect. Also the national media and referees and umpires across leagues only hate us
Darnold is probably still too early to make definitive

Conclusion either way....

But I see what you mean.....

I am hoping that Daniel Jones turns out to be a franchise QB ...so my hope weighs in his favor. Again, too early to make definitive decision either way...I am not blind but

I feel better about D.Jones chances then Darnold.

and it could be only because I am fan

And yet there was a recent article basically arguing that analytics say he was a very productive player and the sudden end of his career is an outlier and sort of aa head-scratcher. Maybe all those fans were seeing things we didn't...

Fans don’t know what they don’t know. I don’t think that makes them bias, but it does stake many of their opinions stereotypical

Yeah. Randle couldn't land a place on the Eagles roster among the group elite jokers who were starting at WR after his life as a New York Giant.

Plus, a lot of fans are stupid, so there is that delightful phenomenon that you have to consider.

Oh, please forgive me.
Biased?

Hell, 1/2 this board thinks EVERY other Giant is pure trash. If we're biased, we're biased in a negative sense.

I mean, lol.

"Pure trash" is putting it nicely describing the Giants play for the past 6, 7, 8 years.

Yeah, it's been rough, no doubt. Gotta just hope there's light @ the end of the tunnel...& it ain't an oncoming train, Haha.

there are fanatics. Some posters here are fairly objective, some think everything about the Giants is great and fortunately, just a few, think the Giants can't do anything right. I'm sure it's the same with every fan base
Lots of folks here mentioned Darnold's supporing cast
BillT : 4/5/2021 7:30 pm : link
And how bad it was. Lot of people here though a lot of Wentz. People here are pretty fair about Dak and how good he is. I mean we may hate them all but on this board they get a pretty fair shake most (but not all) of the time.

Yeah I've seen it on every forum I frequent. Usually those who think every move is garbage are disillusioned by years of disappointment though. There's plenty of Cashman detractors for example, because they haven't won a WS since 2009. Some Bruins fans got progressively more upset with their SC winning GM and HC as they failed to make the playoffs and seemed mired in old school hockey.

The sports different, the names are different, but the posts are pretty much the same 😂
I, for one, am definitely biased. You wanna make something of it?!!

I've seen fans on this board argue that Eli is better than Rodgers.
Mike from SI : 4/6/2021 12:44 am : link
Only a Giants fan would think that.

Are we more or less biased than any other fan base? I have no idea.
Type of fan described in the OP reminds me of..

...conversations at home. Wife says "Oh, I saw ___ the neighbor wearing a Giant hat."

"Yeah, no f'g clue, when I talked about something I read on BBI that Sy said his mouth opened slowly and his eyes glazed over"
Fans of most teams are more knowledgeable

About their own players, but also more biased/emotional.

I would think fans of other teams view a player like Barkley as a talented guy who can’t stay healthy. They likely view Engram as a guy with talent who plays in a bad offense. They likely view Jones as an average to below average QB.

On BBI, each of those players are viewed at more of the extreme ends of the spectrum (at least by the more voluminous posters). Each is viewed alternatively as a bum who we should trade for a fourth round pick, or as a future all-star once they overcome their flaws.

In many ways, the local beat reporters or national media are usually closer to a reasonable take than fans of the team that let their emotions color their opinions.
