The two teams are tied in the standings and have pretty similar stats. Celts coming off a loss last night to the Sixers. Not ready to use "Knicks" and "big game" in the same sentence yet, but if the hope is to make the playoffs...
(Newly starting center) Robert Williams got manhandled by Embid and got into early foul trouble. With Tristan Thompson sidelines, the Celtics had to really juggle the lineups to cover Embid and their defense went to hell. They also committed something like 22 turnovers. Smart was especially stupid. Tatum and Brown don't seem to elevate the play around them and go into hero ball when things get tense and that is not successful. New guy Evan Fournier is a new guy on the COVID list and so there is little bench depth and much of that lacks any experience at all.
The Celtics are a really good team. And they are a really bad team. Which is why they are a .500 team.
The rangers are getting vaccinated today, wonder if the Knicks players plan on doing the same
The fact that they didn't vaccinate all of the athletes by now is insane. I get people would have bitched about it, but who cares. People who bitch about it probably found something else to bitch about 5 minutes later. With all of the MLB, NBA and NHL player and team personnel we're probably talking about under 5,000 people. We have been vaccinating 2- 4 million people a day for over a month now. The fact that teams are still having outbreaks is ridiculous.
For one thing, you can't force anyone to get vaccinated
So it's not simply about availability. Some people are choosing not to be.
That's a larger, off-topic, question. But, there are things that I hope they (eventually) do that stop sort of "forcing" but make it untenable to choose not to.

Oh no I didn't mean you have to force all the players and personnel to get it, I'm just saying it should have been available to any who want it. That way you wouldn't have the issues of team outbreaks still like the Nats and Vancouver Canucks.

Totally agree. And once all the players and personnel have access to the vaccine- can't they stop with the mandatory quarantining rules and get back to a normal schedule? Can't force anyone to get it, but can't they lift the protections once its available to everyone?
Would love to see a W tonight. I am enjoying the disappointing Celtics season. Ainge and Stevens have gotten way too much praise and not nearly enough criticism.

Same here! I'm old school started watching in the late 70's. Cant stand the Celts and that shitty green. I'm enjoying this a lot. My kids don't get it. They don't have any ill will towards them more than any other team. Growing up watching them kick our ass and McHale reaching for that shitty towel every time he was going to the free throw line. Screw them. And I'm sure those older than I hate them even more and would love to have shoved that victory cigar up Red Auerbach's ass on more than one ocassion lol.

I'm older than that and have zero feelings about the Knicks. It's not a Red Sox/Yankees thing to me. I just don't think it's a rivalry. Our rivals are the Lakers and Sixers. But I think, as old as I am, I missed the times when the Knicks were really good and competing for titles (and the Celtics may have stunk at that point, for all I know).

Well from the mid 70's on it hasn't been much of a rivalry. I wouldn't expect a Celts fan to have any hatred towards the Knicks. Actually though the Knicks championship days were just a bit before my time, reading Harvey Araton's book "When the Garden was Eden" the Knicks-Celts had some intense bitter playoff series in the late 60's-early 70's. Also the Knicks-Washington Bullets did too before Earl the Pearl was traded to the Knicks.
I started watching the Knicks when the Celtics were in the process
of winning 8 straight NBA championships, something that almost certainly will never happen again. So I hate them in a way that fans of a certain era hate the Yankees.
I actually didn't hate the Celtics of the Larry Bird era all that much, though, as I kind of admired Bird.
But generally I hate all Boston teams on principle.

I was just starting to watch during (and can really only remember the ending of the Havlicek/Cowans era.
and I STILL hate the Celtics, the green color, the stupid leprechaun and the 4-leaf clover, Larry Bird, the parquet floor, the whole thing. Still pissed off about Bird and the '80s. And now the Knicks are a fun team.
It would be great to beat the Celtics this season. I don't even care that much about playoffs or not, I just want them to win each time they play and to see the young guys get better.
I respect that. I lived in Maine for a year between their first & second title & man...talk about an obnoxious fan base. It's only gotten worse since then. I ran a half up in Hampton Beach, NH in '19 & went out to a bar afterwards for NFL Sunday. I believe it was Giants Vikes, but I was wearing a Giants T-shirt & hat & the bartender was being a complete dick to me because I was a Giants fan. Still sore from XLII & XLVI...oh well.
And fuck anyone who comes in here and says awww shucks I knew we suck this year is house money blah blah blah. The fact is we don't suck. Payton at pg? Sure he sucks but the Celtics literally have no fucking pg!!!! Talent wise we are better than this Celtic team. We are better than the shitty Twolves. We are better than that slop the Nets had out there the other night. I know I'm overreacting but its so godamn frustrating since the ASB losing close game after close game.
and it sounds like I didn’t miss much. At least RJ is continuing to ascend.
Rj was awesome tonight, ball should of been in his hands a lot more
Not gonna argue that the strides RJ has made this year are sooo heartening, but these awful fucking turnovers with no one near him in the last 2 minutes of games just has to stop.

He still hasn't played well of late. Quickley hasn't either although he showing signs of breaking out. The backcourt is just a shitshow right now. I don't care who is there it is just the same bullshit. Payton is uselss. I mean that backcourt violation says it all. How dumb was that? Rose just dribbles way too much, doesn't move the ball enough, and puts up these horrible bricks. The ball movement isn't 100% their fault. The other 4 guys just stand still most of the time. And these shitty offensive possessions lead to bad defensive possessions.
And, yes, the stupid on this team is starting to show. Way too much standing around on D and not knowing where guys are. And that Bullock double on Tatum was the epitome of this team post all star break.
This went from a fun and enjoyable team to watch and root for to one that is extremely frustrating every night now. I HATE this offensive system if you can even call it a system.

tough games but not unbeatable teams, teams you habe to beat if you want to go to the playoffs, games against toronto twice, Lakers, Pelicans twice, hornets, Memphis, Chicago..
in the worst way. Every offensive possession seems so difficult.
Rose is great, but he's a combo guard. Same with IQ.
Also, I know Thibs wants to win and make it to the playoffs (that doesn't feel all that important to me at this point) but can we stop playing Taj Gibson and Derrick Rose in crunch time? I know that developing young players is a process, but how do we know if they're gamers if we don't let them ball with the game on the line?
I'm talking mostly about Quickley. I love Taj and Rose, but they're not going to be playing meaningful minutes for this team when we're competitive.

I get people want Quickley to play more, i do too, but he is clearly hitting the rookie wall, has not been good for a long stretch, Playing big minutes is not thebonly way to develop players...

Like I said, the comment was more about Quickley than anyone else. Ideally you'd want Obi or Robinson playing those minutes but Obi hasn't earned them and Robinson is injured.
Feels like all these recent losses have been really close games where we fall just short. That's bound to happen with a team learning to win. Making the playoffs is still possible obviously, but this year really is about growth & we've seen that from Randle to RJ to the emergence of IQ. Obi is frustrating; he's been a disappointment & really doesn't have a future here long term if we keep Randle.

I think you have 3 starters in Randle, Rj and Mitch..
You have your bench in Rose, Bullock, Burks and Noel or Gibson..
I have a feeling IQ and Toppin will be traded in offseason for a star shooting guard..
If Not Iq right now is another scorer off the bench

if the Bulls didn't invest in Lavine long term. They basically decided to not blow it all up, and went all in with the team that they had. I can't imagine they'll blow it up after a half a season.
Beal is a possibility, but I think it'll have to be a player that forces his way to NYC.

He is a free agebt after next year, they can offer him a max extension but if he wants to leave he will
Who are you thinking? Beal? I gotta imagine LaVine is off table with the Bulls dealing for Vuc.
Chicago can’t trade Lavine after the Vooch deal. They gave up their own unprotected picks. He also has an outside chance at All NBA and become eligible for a supermax this summer.
Lonzo has to be their top priority. It’s beyond the point that need to use that cap space.
Beal would be great but it’s going to be costly and a ton of teams in on him. I’m all for it but he will be tough to get.

Not a lot of teams have the draft picks or the cap space needed to get it done..it will take a lot though
Yes, I don't see Chicago dealing Lavine. As for Beal, I'm all in on him, but he really sounds like he wants to stay in Washington. Does that change? Perhaps, but this isn't a dude-at the moment-looking to flee the DMV.

Yes, yes, yes on Lonzo this summer.
I dont see hoe Beal could be happy coming back next year with Washington, but who knows..
a player like Chris Paul or Fred Van Vleet would be great for this team now.
If they can't land a big player via trade, I wouldn't mind them giving Kyle Lowery or Mike Conley big 1 year deals while they try to find the third star.

Outside of the true superstars, I think Van Vleet would be the perfect fit for what the current Knicks weaknesses are. But at least they have cap space....
But he needs to shoot less too. He should be feeding RJ the ball. RJ should be given some time at point to develop. He's not great handling, but he's getting better at driving and dishing. He's making smart plays. I'd like to see Randle and RJ taking similar amounts of baskets: 20 each.

I think Burks is our best 1 on the team, Rose included. Burks just needs to be better about not taking every shot he can.
I like Rose and IQ coming off the bench. Burks starting at the 1. And Elfrid Payton on a spaceship to Mars.
Burks-Bullock-RJ-Randle-Mitch is probably our best starting lineup with the personnel we have. Obviously, Noel is in there for now.

Rj drives me nuts sometimes but right now hr is best with the ball in his hands and spacing on the floor

Didn’t Van Vleet make clear that he was not interested in leaving Toronto? How is that situation the Knicks fault? And Paul also said he wasn’t interested in the East coast because his family is on the West Coast. So, yeah.....cap space.
Non Knicks related, but this is the upcoming LAL schedule...@ Heat, @ Nets, @ Knicks, @ Charlotte, vs. Boston, vs. Utah, vs. Utah, @ Dallas, @ Dallas...
I'd love a 2-7, 1-8 stretch...all which is entirely possibly with no LBJ/AD.

If he was offered more money you don’t think he would of have left? Those are the reports but he also stated himself on a podcast that he was looking for the biggest pay day. We’ll never know because the Knicks never offered him.
I just didn’t understand why the Knicks never even took a run at him. I know I’m beating a dead horse but I just would have loved him on the Knicks. And he would be fix many of the Knicks current weaknesses.

One of the dumbest plays I've seen in a long time.
Team is still fricken stupid
Double Tatum for what fricken reason? you keave Smart wide open..
Tired of these close losses that could easily be avoided

Lots of stupid play. We dont just need a talented PG and another scorer, we need smarter players.
Several times Bullock was running around the middle of the floor covering nobody.

After these past 10 days of Knicks games my wife is filing divorce by 8am tomorrow lol

and it sounds like I didn’t miss much. At least RJ is continuing to ascend.
Rj was awesome tonight, ball should of been in his hands a lot more

haha same, my wife hates basketball season
Yup, big 3 game homestand coming uo
Rose is great, but he's a combo guard. Same with IQ.
Also, I know Thibs wants to win and make it to the playoffs (that doesn't feel all that important to me at this point) but can we stop playing Taj Gibson and Derrick Rose in crunch time? I know that developing young players is a process, but how do we know if they're gamers if we don't let them ball with the game on the line?
I'm talking mostly about Quickley. I love Taj and Rose, but they're not going to be playing meaningful minutes for this team when we're competitive.

what young player do you want in instead of Taj?
I get people want Quickley to play more, i do too, but he is clearly hitting the rookie wall, has not been good for a long stretch, Playing big minutes is not thebonly way to develop players...
They are terribly limited by lack of a PG. Everyone would be improved by it, even Obi.
Look at the last couple close losses
Boston 20 second chance points to the Knicks 7
Nets 26 to the Knicks 2

Especially Obi. A guy that can hit him for open 3s and help him crash the rim would unlock Obi.

Direct evidence of how Mitch's injury is hurting the Knicks on defense

in the worst way. Every offensive possession seems so difficult.

Like I said, the comment was more about Quickley than anyone else. Ideally you'd want Obi or Robinson playing those minutes but Obi hasn't earned them and Robinson is injured.
If he continues to be one of those guys who adds to his game each year, the sky is the limit.
Getting close to Halter Top Day no in the Northeast?

Feels like all these recent losses have been really close games where we fall just short. That's bound to happen with a team learning to win. Making the playoffs is still possible obviously, but this year really is about growth & we've seen that from Randle to RJ to the emergence of IQ. Obi is frustrating; he's been a disappointment & really doesn't have a future here long term if we keep Randle.

IQ is not going anywhere.
I think its Beal, I also wouldnt rule out Lavine
Beal is a possibility, but I think it'll have to be a player that forces his way to NYC.

He is a free agebt after next year, they can offer him a max extension but if he wants to leave he will
Chicago can’t trade Lavine after the Vooch deal.

Who are you thinking? Beal? I gotta imagine LaVine is off table with the Bulls dealing for Vuc.

Not a lot of teams have the draft picks or the cap space needed to get it done..it will take a lot though
Yes, yes, yes on Lonzo this summer.

I dont see hoe Beal could be happy coming back next year with Washington, but who knows..
Lonzo is a must
If they can't land a big player via trade, I wouldn't mind them giving Kyle Lowery or Mike Conley big 1 year deals while they try to find the third star.

Outside of the true superstars, I think Van Vleet would be the perfect fit for what the current Knicks weaknesses are. But at least they have cap space....
I wouldnt mind starting Burks, ball in Randle and Rjs hands
