Gio Bernard was released today. It seems that the rationale behind signing Booker was that the Giants wanted someone who was a better pass catcher and pass blocker than Gallman to back up Barkley.
Booker's alright, he's not bad, but someone posted a list of RBs who are still FAs, and while none really popped out, there were a couple that I felt were as good, maybe slightly better than Booker, who could have been had for cheaper (e.g. Duke Johnson -- no, I am not the Duke Johnson troll dude).
But now that Gio's released, I'm curious if people think he would have been a better fit than Booker.
While it's not a huge deal, and there's way more you can kill Gettleman for, I still think Booker was overpaid and they signed him too early. I would have preferred they waited a bit before signing a backup RB, and then spent a late round pick on one.
Actually, I can’t think of any reason why he was a priority...
Plus, Bernard may look for more money than Booker right now.
Cincinnati asked to pay cut and he declined.
That is never going to happen with this staff. If DG wasn’t working from JJ’s play sheet, I’m fairly sure he’d be gone pdq. He seems like the ultimate company man; genuine go along to get along kinda guy, which works well at this stage. The player acquisition process certainly bore this out, and everything done and said indicates he is operating under this principle.
The team wanted and valued this player, he was a top priority for one reason or another, and they paid not much to get him. They avoided a bidding war and eliminated the risk of him going elsewhere. Conviction and action. I’m good with that.

Come on. Stop it. DG the villain in every scenario. Get with the program.

Gettleman got to the facility early in the morning, had a private convo with the agent, and negotiated and drew up the paperwork without anyone the wiser. Eventually, he had to tell the coaches, “Hey, Joey, hey Clappah, look what I got fah yous (whether you like it or not)! A new RB! Now we have RBs! Hmm, all this talk of RBs...now I want Roast Beef. Where’s Kevin, maybe he can get me some Roast Beef? Hope you can use him - a bahgain I tell ya!” Or a mild variation thereof.

Having said that, no, DG does not get the benefit of the doubt at all. He's been the GM for 3 years and the team has sucked for 3 years. It's not about making someone out to be the "villain", its about DG doing a shitty job so far. That's an unequivocal fact based on the win-loss record of the team during his tenure.

As you say, he was a top priority for one reason or another. However, to paint it as a keen move by management to avoid a "bidding war" is kind of nutty. I highly doubt any bidding war would ever have occurred over Booker. They had their reasons for liking him more than the plethora of other available free agent RBs, so they signed him. That's it.
1) in a likely Covid affected pre season, he has the reputation of picking up the playbooks quickly and being able to train well on his own.
2) one of the fastest RB to the line in the NFL.
Add it all up and recruiting him early seems smart. I know nothing about his deal structure...that could have been an overpay but we know nothing about who else had contacted him at the time.

Some here KNOW we could have waited, because some here KNOW no one else contacted him. And that’s that!
Honestly not understanding

Overthecap says his 1 year deal with the Raiders was $910,000 with a $50,000 prorated Bonus, at an $887.5k cap hit (taking up .4% of the cap)
According to them, the Giants signed him for 2 years, with
a prorated bonus of 1 mil each year, and base salaries of 1.5 mil in year 1 and 2 mil in year 2 (cap numbers of 2.5 mil and 3.5 mil, respectively).
He had a decent year last year (500 total yards) so I guess he was due for a raise, and again, as I stated, it's not like this is the biggest deal in the world, but is it really a stretch to think that there was going to be a bidding war for Devontae Booker?
I trust Judge but not so much DG (Jonathan Stewart). If Judge wanted him, fine, but it does seem kinda weird that he was the first player they signed, and he was given a 2 year contract, especially when you consider some of the RBs who are still unsigned.
I'm sorry, I thought this was a Giants message board, my bad for discussing one of their FA signings.

Why have your posts been so snarky lately after all these years, particularly when it comes to questioning DG?

Snark is not intended. Sarcasm, a little bit. :)...When Booker was signed, a bunch came on here and effectively said, “....as though he was in high demand and we had to sign him right away...” They were speaking out of their asses given they had zero idea who contacted Booker (if any) and how much he was valued by Judge, even at the cost of perhaps spending a bit more. It’s the CERTAINTY that brings out the “snark” or sarcasm out of me..In life or on here, I dislike “know-it-alls,” always have always will..
😎😎
With that said, the Giants continue to oddly prioritize this position with their actions as if they were going on the endangered species list.
Nevertheless, hope Booker adds good value.
Point blank, some running backs are so good as a runner or receiver that their pass blocking issues can be overlooked or easily mitigated. Apparently the coaches did not feel that way about Gallman so they went and found someone else.
Also, I seem to remember back up rbs like Reuben Droughns who were special team aces. For years this board wrote post after post killing backup players (Sinorice Moss, Ramses Barden) who didn't play well on special teams as spot wasters. Now it appears that people are deliberately ignoring special teams for a perceived marginal upgrade in running ability

Well said
After Day 1, when no players are signed in FA, the sky is falling and everyone is asleep at the wheel.
When we sign a player right away, we outbid only ourselves for a scrap heap player that is a cap drain and a burden to society.
Basically a fool-proof way to keep bashing the FO!!

Funny how the “Abrams sucks he can’t manage the cap” narrative quickly disappeared. They haven’t yet conjured up a cover story to get out from under that one

Relax, the off-season is still young.. :)
DG is now in full control of personnel and that is why we are seeing this turn around and far more success in both the draft and FA.

It used to be a Giants message board. Now it is a battleground for the narrative. You need to jump on board with the the Giants are all clueless idiots and every move they make sucks, or you need to jump on board with the Giants are super-geniuses and every move is either wonderful or, at worst, completely irrelevant.
It takes a while to scroll through posts and find actual discussion.
