NFT: Mets IGT (game 3) Peterson @ Nola 4:05 pm Start

jpkmets : 4/7/2021 2:57 pm
Hey gang!

4pm game today, don't forget.

Mets Lineup"

Nimmo CF
Lindor SS
Conforto RF
Alonso 1B
Smith LF
Villar 2B
McCann C
Guillorme 3B
Peterson P

McNeil gets a rest -- guess it's a combo of his tough early start (though he's hit balls hard) and also tries to give the sinkerballer his best IF defense.

Mets face Phillies Ace, Aaron NOLa (6.2 IP 2 ER 6 K 6 H 1 BB) in first start

Phils go with:

McCutcheon LF
Hoskins 1B
Harper LF
Realmuto C
Bohm 3B
Gregorius SS
Segura 2B
Hasley CF
Nola P
this is starting to become a serious issue

with Rojas. How do you sit McNeil against a righty in the third game of the season? McNeil is 0-8 but 5 of his outs have been missiles. What the fuck?
Just hate that we've started bench players twice in the first three
jpkmets : 4/7/2021 3:02 pm : link
games.

Didn't like Rojas' in-game work last year but was all about giving him a mulligan due to odd circumstances all around.

But this team is too good to have a crummy manager.

If they are underperforming in June, I hope they ax him and bring in a veteran as a stop gap. I know it's early for this talk, but I'm just not a fan of anything he's done so far for this team.

Yeah,

I really don't think this guy has anywhere near the credibility to be pulling this stuff. Hope he's toast if the team underperforms.

Don't like the manager at all.

McNeil hits a lot better

against Nola than Villar does. It's not like Villar is some great defender or anything. Makes no sense.
These "depth" singings
JB_in_DC : 4/7/2021 3:06 pm : link
like Villar and Pillar turn into negatives when the FO and/or Rojas feel the need to consistently work them into the lineup ahead of much better players. Frustrating.

I think it is a trend throughout MLB. Mookie Betts has benched twice in the first 7 games for the Dodgers.
yeah I guess the message hasn't broken through to Rojas yet
Eric on Li : 4/7/2021 3:08 pm : link
in the first week I think managers do tend to like to get bench players a start or two but with JDD already out it's unnecessary. If you want to play Villar that badly put him at 3b. I understand why they didn't want to do that because Villar is a much worse defender than Guillorme but that's why I thought signing Villar was strange in the first place.
McNeil
DanMetroMan : 4/7/2021 3:25 pm : link
has been hitting rockets (elite HH numbers), very unlucky. It happens.

-Rosenthal might be done for the year. Big loss for the A's.
It started with not starting Dom on Monday
csb : 4/7/2021 3:27 pm : link
Then he didn't pitch hit Dom in the 4th, now he's sitting McNeil when he's played 2 games in the last 8 days. The guy doesn't need rest, he needs to work himself into a groove.

Rojas needs to stop overthinking these lineups, there is a core 8 that should be starting 90% of the games
Pretty gross
allstarjim : 4/7/2021 3:28 pm : link
Also wondering why Walker isn't getting the start today. If anyone knows, can you fill me in?

Hopefully Guillorme can continue what he did last year, but I hate seeing Villar in there. I suspect you're right about infield defense being the reason for the Villar + Guillorme infield.

Phillies have their normal starters in, their A+ lineup.

Guillorme is 1-4 against Nola career. Villar carries a .214 BA against him with 3 hits in 14 ABs, with 3 BBs and a .333 OBP.

McNeil is 6-22 (.273 BA) with a .385 OBP and .839 OPS and a HR against Nola in his career.

In his career Nola is 8-2 vs the Mets in 16 starts, with Mets holding a .653 OPS against him.

Hopefully the bats can get to Nola early.
Rojas says he just wants to get Villar a start
Eric on Li : 4/7/2021 3:28 pm : link
which is not uncommon week 1. Just frustrating to do it in a rubber game with JDD already out.

Notes via Luis Rojas:

* Davis' left hand is "swelled up." He is due for more X-rays this afternoon.

* McNeil is fine. The Mets wanted to get Villar a start.

* Rojas "can't wait" to play a home game in front of fans for the first time in a year and a half tomorrow.
Well hopefully
allstarjim : 4/7/2021 3:32 pm : link
Villar can go 3-4 with a couple of stolen bases and a couple of runs today and make Rojas look smart.

I hate it, though.

DanMetroMan : 4/7/2021 3:32 pm : link
JDD already out, Peterson vs. Nola strongly in the Phillies favor, May also unavailable and the Mets off on Friday...pretty idiotic time to need to get Villar in there.
.
DanMetroMan : 4/7/2021 3:33 pm : link
McNeil is top 9% in the league in HH% through 2 games, top 8% in XBA, top 5% in XSLUG. So no he hasn't been pressing by the numbers. He's been very unlucky.

I think they wanted to force the Phillies to face a lefty rather than three straight righties.
Not agreeing with it...
ZGiants98 : 4/7/2021 3:55 pm : link
But I feel that Pillar, Villar, and LG are viewed as "more" than traditional bench players. My guess is the front office determined each would get a start over the first three games some time ago.

Nido is a traditional backup C and Almora will probably be used mostly for late inning defense.... But the other three are going to get forced into games..
Just catching up...

I know x rays were negative but did they say how long Davis is expected to be out, if at all?
Its bugging me that Conforto is in the 3 hole too
ZGiants98 : 4/7/2021 4:02 pm : link
I feel he's a natural RBI guy and perfect protection for Alonso. Would like to see Dom or McNeil in the 3 spot. Small gripe though.

No timetable. He's getting additional x-rays but hasn't because of the swelling.

I think they wanted to force the Phillies to face a lefty rather than three straight righties.

The decision was made prior to the season starting and having the first 3 games postponed. They wanted to split up the two lefties (Peterson and Lucchesi) because they felt they were too similar and it decreases the chances that both will appear in the same series.

and poor rotation depth. Peterson didn’t really show enough to prove that he wasn’t just another guy last year.

Team has to hang in there until Carrasco and Noah come back. Today’s game is a schedule loss (our AAAA guy vs a legit ace) but losing a “schedule win” (DeGrom vs their AAAA guy) is what we can’t afford.
We

4th starter, not panicking, but also not surprised.

I think Walker fares better (probably), but with a leaky bullpen and minus 40% of the starting rotation Mets have to hope to stay in contention until Carrasco, Syndergaard and Lugo return.

And then hope all 3 are healthy and their usual selves.

Some people underestimate that.

remember a manager doing this at this stage of the season. This isn’t some long road trip when guys are tired. They aren’t playing cross country. They are playing in Philly against a team that was 3-0 going into the series and he sits two of his best hitters. Guy is in over his head getting cute with lineup in the first fucking series of the year.

Sorry but this guy isn’t the guy.
Not a great start for a guy in a contract year

Obviously ridiculously SSS but I do wonder if it is weighing on him

From Baron Twitter.

Michael Conforto is having a real pisser of a series. He has left 8 runners on-base himself today for a total of 13 in this series. #Mets

Not panicking yet but what's the point of putting together a juggernaut lineup if you're not going to put them all together in the lineup?

And you're right, it's the first 3 games, get your A+ lineup out there.
This is me not panicking at all
bhill410 : 4/7/2021 8:58 pm : link
But some of the concerns we had certainly reared its head in this series. First is bullpen, second was Peterson reverting to minor league numbers and 3) Rojas in over his head.

Plenty of time for those to change course but once again you don’t usually see all of your concerns this early and so thoroughly.
Geez...
ZGiants98 : 4/7/2021 9:10 pm : link
We are 1-2 but we easily could have been 2-1 if Rojas hadnt boggled the deGrom game.

Guys are clearly rusty after a 10 day layoff. Ive seen plenty of good signs. The lineup is perking up. Villar, Pillar, and LG have all looked pretty good off the bench. deGrom and Stroman pitched like 1 and 2 starters. Peterson got roughed up in the first but showed some resiliency bouncing back until the 5th. Luchessi looked good in relief.

Not a great series but its going to take weeks before things start balancing out and we get a real feel for this team.

I also feel the pen will get shuffled over a few times. Hunter, Vizcaino, and Drew Smith could all find themselves up soon and of course Lugo its returning as well. We haven't even seen Diaz yet....

What is an appropriate reaction that wouldn't be overreacting?

Also, there is no "we" people act however they want and IDGAF what you think is an appropriate reaction.

Losing is fine

Losing because you rested a starter, one of your best hitters, in game 3 of the year for no apparent reason, is allowed to be questioned.
I am a Rojas fan but criticism is warranted
Eric on Li : 4/8/2021 9:50 am : link
he twice this week benched starters and their backups came up with men on base and didn't get the job done.

he's also batting Conforto in the middle of the lineup and he's appeared to be pretty ice cold when he's got better alternatives (McNeil is both the better hitter historically and making better contact...when given the chance to play).

he's overmanaging and needs to keep things simple. team's play better when the manager is doing what's right and equitable (as opposed to rewarding players with unearned playing time).

I am also a Sandy fan, and some criticism is due his way for the BP and defense. Also possibly the coaching staff if things don't improve. Ron Darling called out the Realmuto first pitch homer off Barnes yesterday that essentially ended the game. You can't have a coaching staff getting outclassed by an announcer and expect it to not happen with the team in the other dugout.
