Draft, RB, and Giants future

lugnut : 4/7/2021 4:36 pm
Just wondering if maybe a lot of us are underestimating Giants interest/intent on taking an RB sooner than anyone expects? (AT ALL might be sooner than anyone expects.) I do not have high hopes for Barkley returning to form, let alone full-steam at season start. And he's gonna want to get paid sooner rather than later. Booker is a journeyman and turns 29 in a few weeks. And Giants seem indifferent (inexplicably to me) to Gallman. Just seems like the need and opportunity are yawning pretty wide, and relative inactivity in that area (Booker signing notwithstanding), might be telegraphing something. If we go RB in 2nd or 3rd, should we be surprised? Do we want it?
I’m waiting for this place to implode

when the Giants take Smith at 11 and then late in the first we see a Giants trade banner pop up on ESPN and we trade up to take Najee Harris somewhere between 20 and 32.
IMO?

There is zero chance of taking a RB early.

And I agree

lugnut, it seems odd we are seemingly walking into the draft with 2 RB’s on the roster, one of which is coming off an ACL.
RB is on the need list that is for sure

I am thinking rounds 4 or 6 for that position to be added to.

We should go Edge, WR, OL, LB as well as RB.
Would love to see either

Javonte Williams UNC or Kylin Hill Mississippi State would look great in Blue! The former probably won’t be there when the Giants come come to the podium in 3rd Round, but the latter should. Hill could be there in Round 4 — I’d snag him in a second!
I like Rhamondre Stevenson as a mid-round, say round 4 if we can.
Angel Eyes : 4/7/2021 4:58 pm : link
Power runner with some speed, good in pass blocking. Would be effective in a rotation.

no RBs in the first round

You took the words right out of my mouth
I’ve put Rhamondre as my first 6th rounder in everyone of my mocks
And if he’s not there then go get
Pooka Williams. Jarret Patterson or CJ verdell
I Haven't Been Following Potential Lower Round RBs

but some kinds of "Dave Meggett type scat back / returner" might be a good 6th round pick if he exists and is available. Or UDFA.

I see them drafting RB 3-5 rounds into the draft

I completely agree with your Barkley assessment. He is a huge question.
I believe the Giants need RB help.

There are decent prospects early and late, and that's late as in UDFA, though obviously, you're not likely to pick up an UDFA with 1st, or 2nd, or 3rd round talent. I don't see the Giants taking one in the 1st, but a 2nd or 3rd is possible. I'd like a RB with some power in their game. Ideally, it's part of a total package, but sometimes you're faced with a choice of taking a player with a lot of the talent you want, while passing on another who has more overall talent.

I was big on Stevenson early, but have come off him somewhat, and see him as something of a boom or bust prospect. He's slow out of the blocks, and though hard to bring down, not violent. I'm unsure he'd be ideal for the short yardage power the Giants need. But he can really block, and has natural hands that I consider under-used in school. I see him likely going in the 4th or 5th, but you never know. RB's like that sometimes even end up as UDFA's.
I don't think

a scat back is what they need. They need someone like Rhamondre that can take some carries and lessen the burden on Barkley coming off an injury.
Shedding just a little more light on the subject

First, the GIANTS have 4 RBs on the roster right now counting Chunn, who has actually played a little for Dallas, and NYG PS hold over Mizzell.

It's actually 5 RBs if you remember that Penny played RB in the NFL before he was moved to FB, and he could move back if needed.

So it's not like they are going to be short-handed at the position going into camp. They may very well choose to alter the player personnel composition at the position between now and then. But they don't have to.

Also recognize that there will be plenty of unemployed RBs after rosters settle down in mid-September. Remember, they had their choice of multiple experienced backs last year when they needed help after SB went down, and actually signed a couple of them. The same thing is going to happen this year - there will be veteran help available if they need it. I would not be overly surprised if Gallman ended up being one of these available guys.

Given that SB is a recent first rounder, and that they ponied up some pretty good money for Booker, it's not likely that DG would spring for another RB high in the draft. But it's not impossible.

The smart money says they WILL bring in another RB one way or another, maybe a draft pick - probably a third day guy, maybe a rookie FA, or just maybe a vet FA on a VSB (Veteran Salary Benefit) deal who hasn't found a home by the time summer camps get going.
3rd day
OC2.0 : 4/7/2021 5:55 pm : link
For maybe Sermon, Patterson & others
Early 3rd day seems to make sense although would

have no issues if someone they liked was sitting there in Rd 3.

The Giants need a young developing RB in the unit. And Barkley and Booker don’t fit that profile. Pick a guy who gets his feet wet during this year and becomes the #2 guy when 2022 kicks off.

I picked Michael carter in the third
Bill L : 4/7/2021 8:41 pm : link
I’ve seen him picked around that spot in several mock drafts.
Don’t get the Barkley comment
BillT : 4/7/2021 9:32 pm : link
He’s not going to be at full speed but he’s going to want to be paid sooner rather than later. Makes no sense.

I have not looked at a lot of film on Stevenson, but what I have seen shows a big back is is often taken down by arm tackles. Most of the time he has five or six yards to get up to speed before anyone is close to him, and even then he goes down fairly easily. I'm not a fan.
Let's make one thing absolutely clear:
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 4/7/2021 10:00 pm : link
without a strong OL it will not matter who the RB is. We need to complete the OL first.
