Nowadays many either talk non-stop and don't allow the game to breathe, or they're relatively football clueless. Add in the non-stop commercials and all things hardcore football fans couldn't care less about, and I'm watching a number of games on mute. A post-playing career in TV is great for the former athlete, but not always great for us.

I agree. There are moments where you can just let the game breath and not talk, but I think most teams don't realize that.
That being said, Madden did a lot of whacky overtalking about some topics, but I always remember it adding to games, and not detracting from them.

One of the things that I'll do is adjust the "C-channel" of the 5way surround sound way down. The dialog goes through that channel. Dial up the surround and you increase the crowd/field volume.

Between Summerall and Madden and for some of you older guys, Summerall and Brookshire. I guess Summerall and Brookshire hold a special place for me as they bring up memories of my early childhood and my love of football.
Just my opinion.

Yup!
Ray Scott from Packers’ fame who got to call some national games was the second best, imo
