Cheap Thrills: UDFA RB’s

TC : 4/8/2021 2:25 pm
I believe the Giants need help at RB. We could discuss whether this is true, and if so, why, but assuming it is, depending upon what opportunities present themselves as the draft unfolds, and what the Giants’ perception of what their needs are, these need could be met early in the draft, in the middle rounds, late or via UDFA’s. Or as has been done in recent years, via free agency. I think any of these approaches is potentially valid in attempting to add RB talent.

And as is true in most drafts, there’s talent early, middle and late. Guys like Williams or Harris early, or Jefferson and Stevenson in the middle rounds, but I’d like to focus on a trio of RB’s who I suspect may be UDFA’s, but who could still have something to contribute. And before it’s pointed out that RB’s like Williams, etc., have more potential, YES that’s why these guys are likely UDFA’s ;-)! But that doesn’t mean they they might not potentially be useful if the Giants don’t want to spend higher draft capital on a RB.

BRENDEN KNOX, MARSHAL 6', 223 –

The one thing I believe the Giants have often lacked in their running game in recent years is no-nonsense short yardage power. Yeah, I know, the OL, but it’s more than that. Knox is made to order for this sort of game. Pro-sized, physical, one-cut RB with good burst and excellent vision that gets north/south quickly. And not really slow once he gets beyond the LOS either. Added bonus of good hands and has been productive catching the ball. May sneak into the 7th round, but more likely and UDFA.

Another man-sized RB that is quite similar to Knox, but with perhaps a little less potential. Almost certainly an UDFA if he gets picked up. He’s less of a power specialist, though he has some. But to compensate, he’s a little more elusive, and perhaps a bit faster. He also can catch

This RB may never make it in, or even to the NFL. OR, he could be something truly special. Certainly an UDFA. Unlike the first two RB’s, he has no real power, though paradoxically, he will gain YAC and fall forward dragging tacklers. I have no idea if he can catch, and his attempts at blocking are pathetic. So why any interest? He’s got God given ability running the ball. And you won’t need to spend a draft pick to find out if he can play in the NFL.

1446 yards, 7.7 avg., 23 TD’s, 120 yards avg. per game. He’s magic with the ball in his hands. He’s got burst, decent long speed, is slippery as a fish, and has some of the best vision I’ve seen from a RB at any level of play. He can run inside or outside, and as noted, isn’t afraid of contact, though he usually can avoid it. His stop/start move is a thing of beauty. At his best, he reminds me of some of the best RB’s to play the game

Huge dudes aren't necessarily that great at it. I.e., Bradshaw assuming that role from Jacobs, or Kiick running it in rather than Csonka.
If you miss out on Kylin Hill in the fourth you can

grab projected UDFA Stevie Scott as a short yardage back. Scott had the same high career percentage of 1st down conversions on 3rd down with 1-6 yards to go. Both are at 66.7% but Scott has twice as many attempts in 2/3rds the games. Both made TDs on 23% of their career red zone attempts.Scott did it in twice as many attempts with 123.

Nice little scat back, but I'll take the original. ;-)

While he's good, at that size I don't know if there's enough there that I'd want him. A smaller back I like better is Funk.

There is one that intrigues me because the scouting reports really fit what someone like Joe Judge really likes. I might target in BBI Mock Draft so if you keep an eye out on that you will see the name.

A chastened young man. But can he keep his sh!t together?

Broke Tarik Cohen's record.

But needs to stay humble, and watch who he hangs with.

ball closely to know these guys, but it’s exactly what I was talking about. If we don’t resign Gallman than any of the guys named here are exactly what we need SB or no SB.
Thanks again
