NFT: Bands you like with singers you hate

Greg from LI : 4/8/2021 9:01 pm
So I'm flipping around the radio recently and a song comes on. Instrumental section .....sounds pretty good.

And then, I hear the caterwauling of Vince Neil. Ugh, Motley Crue - I hate Motley Crue! It started to dawn on me,however, that I actually don't hate Motley Crue. I just hate Vince Neil.

Anyone else have that realization about a band?

Seriously Dave just riffing and Eddie coming up with his incredibly cool innovative stuff worked for me all the time
Big disappointment that Eddie barely released anything last 20 yrs
A different kind of truth did have some real excellent guitar work for half the album
Hopefully Eddie put a ton of stuff down in his archives that we will hear some day

100% with you on G&R. Disagree with regards to Pearl Jam since I always liked them better than Nirvana!

Pearl Jam is another band that was amazing live and Vedder was a fucking lunatic on stage. One of the best shows I've seen is PJ at Lollapalooza in 1992 at SPAC in NY. They played "Alive" towards the end of their set and the entire lawn crowd rushed the stage, overpowered security and went fucking mental. One of the best live musical moments of my life. And the reason they never had another Lollapalooza at SPAC.

Absolute utter choas. Pure love and emotion though. Wasn't violent or ugly. It was amazing. Love the band and the lead man.

Then Ministry came on and started with Psalm 69 and N.W.O. HO-LY shit - what a personal awakening for me. Never heard anything like that in my life. Sick. Al was singing into a bone-covered mic stand going absolutely insane.

Next set was Soundgarden - made it to the front row eventually and slapped hands with Chris Cornell.

Topped it all off with RHCP who did 19 fucking songs ending with Crosstown Traffic. I was absolutely exhausted. That festival was one of the best days of my life.

Ha, as someone stated above, musical tastes differ. Love Stevie Nicks and it is a different one.

What I do not like are the very high pitched screechy voices.
I’ve always thought I would’ve been into Janes Addiction
BLUATHRT : 4/9/2021 7:53 am : link
If not for Perry Ferrell. Mountain song is kick ass musically and then his voice makes me want to rip my ear drums out.
Fred Durst is a good one - that band was ok musically
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 4/9/2021 7:53 am : link
Anthony Keidis is another one for me. No range, nothing you don't even need his vocals in the song.
Axl Roses falsetto is almost comical...
penkap75 : 4/9/2021 8:01 am : link
yet GnR is a great band.

Anthony Keidis cant sing for shit, but he works great for RHCP.
Billy Corgan sings like shit
penkap75 : 4/9/2021 8:02 am : link
but I like early smashing pumpkins.
Not a singer
SLIM_ : 4/9/2021 8:23 am : link
but a bunch have talked about metal bands and Iron Maiden... I can't stand Jannick Gers. Maiden is my favorite group but the guy prances around stage like a jackass and he just doesn't fit the band. I realize that some of it is that he doesn't have a part on the older songs but I still can't stand him.
a lot of punk has insufferable singers
UConn4523 : 4/9/2021 8:30 am : link
Rise Against and Blink 182 come to mind for me - love the drumming, hate the singing.
Blind Melon.

Love the band and the music, but Shannon Hoon's (RIP) voice goes right through me.

I love Pearl Jam, and generally like Eddie Vedder, but there are a number of songs where his voice just doesn't work for me.

The Doors. I wouldn't say I hate Morrison's voice, but he was a pretty shitty singer.

The Beatles (sort of), Anything they let Ringo sing is an automatic pass for me (with the exception of "With a Little Help", but FU Paul for letting Ringo sing such a great song).
Bands you like with singers you hate is
Spyder : 4/9/2021 9:01 am : link
an oxymoron to me. If I hate the singer the band does not matter to me, I don't bother. Why should I, there are so many bands with great singers and great music, why waste any time with crappy vocals?

I guess Dream Theater comes close for me, LaBrie cheese aside, the band is great, and they seem to overcome the vox live, I have seen them twice.

But I never even bother with Guns and Roses or AC/DC, instant skip song, change station....

Lol, that song was a throwaway. It was put together quickly just for Ringo. They purposely wrote it with little vocal range. Funny fact, the line would you stand up and walk out on me was supposed to be something like would you throw ripe tomatoes at me but Ringo made them change it because he thought he'd be pelted with tomatoes if they played it live.

(If I didn't lose all credibility with Stevie Nicks, I surely will now...) I actually like Octopus' Garden (although it makes no sense to me) and I like his voice doing it.
This might sound crazy to some but Led Zep and Robert Plant
Dr. D : 4/9/2021 10:22 am : link
I learned to appreciate Led Zeppelin despite Robert Plant's voice. I used to hate (still don't like) the screeching in some songs.

Rush - Geddy Lee
GnR - I really f*cking hate Axl Roses's voice. The band is a quick station turner for me bc of Axl.

You're playing a semantic game. I'm talking about bands where you like the music but don't listen to the band because you can't stand the singer.

Not really, since in my case a bad singer wrecks the band's music, it really doesn't matter to me if their music is played well.

BTW, not trying to play any games with your thread or idea, it is a good idea for a discussion. I did come up with Dream Theater as one possible exception in my case.

One more, I hate Rod Stewart, but love the Jeff Beck Group. My solution is to listen to Jeff Beck without Rod Stewart. ;-)
I just remembered one...
Johnny5 : 4/9/2021 11:35 am : link
Extreme. Fantastic band... and I listened despite the awful Gary Sharone... and it wasn't bad enough that he also had to ruin a period of Van Halen... lol
I can honestly say
Old Dirty : 4/9/2021 12:35 pm : link
I don't think there's any band that I like who's singer I hate. If I hate the singer, I hate the band. Take a band like Queensryche. I can't stand that singer's voice, his look, everything. Makes me hate the entire band.

I almost went with U2 with Bono being somewhat of a dick, but I can love the music without letting my opinion of him interfere.

And whoever said they love Van Halen, but hate DLR, WHAAAATTT?!?! How the heck do you pull that one off? To me, DLR is what made VH so cool. If they came on the scene with Sammy as their front man, they never sniff the success they had in the 70's & 80's. No way.

MY biggest pick is life of agony after ugly though. I fully support transgender persons but with the lead singer's heart no longer being in it it changed everything.
Not a huge fan of Chris Cornell's voice either...

Between he and Vedder, I wanted to go deaf everytime I heard it.

And back to Vedder...his version of Last Kiss should have forced him to be shunned from singing ever again.

Just my .02

pjcas18 : 4/9/2021 1:28 pm : link
and back in the grunge battle days I was squarely in Peral Jam > Niravana camp (since changed) but he goes through certain parts of some songs where his voice reverberates (if that's the right word) and he sounds like a goat.

Stevie Nicks has a little bit of the goat singer effect in her too on some songs.

Ha ha, that Last Kiss song is awful. If you want one that’s worse to listen to “Just Breathe.” It makes Last Kiss look like the greatest song ever.

If I hate a singer, I can't like the band enough to actually enjoy listening to their music. Seems like a complete impossibility.

I can respect the musicianship of a band with a terrible singer, just like I can respect the singing ability of someone who uses it to terrible ends. But I can never be in a position where I'm saying to myself, "I'm in a certain mood right now and you know what would hit the spot, despite how much I hate that singer?? ______ by Rush!"

but the guy from Crash Test Dummies reminded me of Jame Gumb from Silence of the Lambs AKA Buffalo Bill.

So even if the song was the greatest song every written, I'd always picture Jame Gumb with his twigs and berries stuffed between his legs looking into a camera singing it. Which was not desirable to me (nttawwt if people like that).

That's Brad Roberts.
CTDs are actually a very talented band if you can get past his baritone voice. God Shuffled His Feet is their best album and it's one of my all time favorites. They deserved to be more than one hit wonders in America. They have a cult status following in Canada where they are from (Winnipeg)

IMO the CTD's 1st album is their best. Much more county/folksy than their later releases. It's not for everyone but one of my all-time favorite alt-county albums

Even if you love them, if you close your eyes and listen to that song "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" you have to hear Jame Gumb from Silence of the Lambs. I had to look it up at one point and make sure that actor wasn't their lead singer.

the rest of it - I respect everyone's musical preferences.

I put him and Cornell 1 & 2. It's cliché but you could feel Lane's singing. Him and Jerry harmonizing was special.

The link I've added is a real treat, isolated vocals of top grunge bands. Scott Weiland was also amazing.
