NFT: Bands you like with singers you hate

Greg from LI : 4/8/2021 9:01 pm
So I'm flipping around the radio recently and a song comes on. Instrumental section .....sounds pretty good.

And then, I hear the caterwauling of Vince Neil. Ugh, Motley Crue - I hate Motley Crue! It started to dawn on me,however, that I actually don't hate Motley Crue. I just hate Vince Neil.

Anyone else have that realization about a band?

Guns n Roses

and Geddy Lee initially

but like scotch, I think his voice is an acquired taste.

I liked Vince
Payasdaddy : 4/8/2021 9:13 pm : link
For first few albums
Fits the band. Is he great talent ,no. But crue was pretty cool .
No I realize musically they aren’t really any good
Actually like some sixx AM stuff

Not big into y&t, didn’t like singers voice
Saxon. Biff byford Ok
Deftones. Not big into singer
Dokken. George lynch kills. Don dokken, not so much
Greta van fleet. Like some of their music quiet a lot. At times singer sounds like someone stepping on a cat’s tail
After awhile, Klaus meine from scorpions can annoy me
Tool. Only so much

Axel can be whiney
Payasdaddy : 4/8/2021 9:16 pm : link
But usually love him
Love Eric adams of manowar in 80s. Vicious set of pipes
Can still listen to halford, dip, Dickinson, Geoff Tate in primes, all day
Dio never left his prime. Sounded great till he died.

Todd latorre of queesryche can sing. New solo album quite heavy and quiet good
Ha Paya
Johnny5 : 4/8/2021 9:22 pm : link
I think we have similar tastes but I actually like Chino for Deftones. I mean not everything, especially when he screams... but yeah. And I liked Don Dokken, although it was George Lynch that made that band for me. Halford was the man back in the day!

I agree with Greg on Vince Neil, although I didn't hate him on Livewire.

And Mr. Nargi... Pearl Jam? WTF dude Eddie Vedder on those first two albums is unreal... lol

the Mighty Mighty Bosstones I thought about Dickie Barrett (that guy cannot be serious) - then I grew to love them but now that is gravelly scream is shot and he has to sing he's even more exposed.

I think Bono is another one I'm not a fan of, I don't love U2, but I think Bono is the worst of the bunch.

Silversun Pickups
widmerseyebrow : 4/8/2021 10:05 pm : link
I don't follow them closely or anything, but I'll find myself liking a song of theirs until I hear that voice too much.
Rage Against the Machine
RickJames : 4/8/2021 10:10 pm : link
Love the bad, but, Zack always came across as a bit of a dick.

Not that I love them....Fred Durst really screwed Limp Bizkit.

I would like a lot of Death Metal bands if they could find real singers; not a big fan of the growling.

I've been a U2 fan for 30+ years and think Bono is one of the great front man, singers and lyricists in the history of music.

And you think the absolute opposite. Musical tastes are a very personal and interesting thing... ;)

Agree completely with this one.

Van Halen works better as an instrumental for me. Most of their lyrics and singing is just annoying to me.

Good question. Smashing Pumpkins was a band growing up that I loved their vibe, melodies, and overall musicianship and their originality. But man, I just never could get behind Corgan’s voice. I know it was different and unlike anything else, but I just thought he kinda sucked.
Hahaha. Motley Crue
Bricktop : 4/8/2021 10:37 pm : link
was my first thought, but not bc I hate Vince Neil. But bc he was the outsider that the rest of the band "recruited" in Southern California. He was a pretty boy singing with another band at parties and he was added to the mix. If you read the Nikki Sixx's books, he clearly loved, hated, loved, hated, etc Vince Neil. Really interesting band dynamics between Neil, Sixx, Mars and Tommy.

But the correct answer for me is Paul Di'Anno from Iron Maiden.

His voice changed dramatically over the years. In the early era of the band (mid to late 70s) he was very high and screechy...the Geddy Lee voice people who don't like the band often refer to... but starting in the 80s and onward his delivery got lower and more restrained each album on. He was singing as opposed to screaming. If someone listens to something off, say, Hold Your Fire or Roll The Bones , it sounds like an entirely different band than the one who recorded 2112
I’m going to be alone on this one

over the years and Geddy's voice somehow holds up. It's really amazing and something I've always deeply respected about them. They are SO great live. They were like a machine. Iron Maiden is the same for me. I've seen them in multiple countries, dating back to tours with Judas Priest and Yngwie Malmsteen back in the 80's.

So the statement that his voice has evolved makes a TON of sense and is spot on. Great call. I think his voice evolved to the point that it fit the band perfectly.

In fact, I just watched a cover of Subdivisions with members from Suicidal Tendencies, Testament, Anthrax, and Crobot. It was good. But there's no way to duplicate Geddy's voice within the context of the music and the fact that it takes five musicians to replicate a three-piece is pretty unreal. Speaks to the brilliance and originality of the band.

Glens Falls Civic Center and RPI Fieldhouse in Troy, NY.

Rush at RCMH has to date back to the early 80's. That's crazy.

You happen to save your ticket stubs? A friend of mine has every ticket from the early 80's. It's an unbelievable collection.

I saw Maiden in Mexico, PR (happened to be there on vacation with my wife), Canada and Brazil - totally different fan experience from the US/NA tours. Even the Bell Centre was just batshit though. They're back touring next year, apparently. Bart Scott voice.

I get the Vedder dislike. I liked him on the first few albums but not so much post Vitalogy. That song from a few years back, “Just Breathe” is brutal to listen to. He’s almost unintelligible. It’s like a mumbly whine. My friend at work can’t stand Vedder or the dude from The Offspring so I rotated ringtones on my phone of Yellow Ledbetter and the Keep em Separated one by The Offspring as a joke for like a month lol.
Nickelback, Chad Kroeger

Oops, I hate the band and the singer lol. Seriously though, how does Kroeger have vocal cords left. He sounds like he is taking a painful shit in every song.

Pearl Jam is another band that was amazing live and Vedder was a fucking lunatic on stage. One of the best shows I've seen is PJ at Lollapalooza in 1992 at SPAC in NY. They played "Alive" towards the end of their set and the entire lawn crowd rushed the stage, overpowered security and went fucking mental. One of the best live musical moments of my life. And the reason they never had another Lollapalooza at SPAC.

Absolute utter choas. Pure love and emotion though. Wasn't violent or ugly. It was amazing. Love the band and the lead man.

Then Ministry came on and started with Psalm 69 and N.W.O. HO-LY shit - what a personal awakening for me. Never heard anything like that in my life. Sick. Al was singing into a bone-covered mic stand going absolutely insane.

Next set was Soundgarden - made it to the front row eventually and slapped hands with Chris Cornell.

Topped it all off with RHCP who did 19 fucking songs ending with Crosstown Traffic. I was absolutely exhausted. That festival was one of the best days of my life.

Ha, as someone stated above, musical tastes differ. Love Stevie Nicks and it is a different one.

What I do not like are the very high pitched screechy voices.
I’ve always thought I would’ve been into Janes Addiction
BLUATHRT : 4/9/2021 7:53 am : link
If not for Perry Ferrell. Mountain song is kick ass musically and then his voice makes me want to rip my ear drums out.
Fred Durst is a good one - that band was ok musically
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 4/9/2021 7:53 am : link
Anthony Keidis is another one for me. No range, nothing you don't even need his vocals in the song.
Axl Roses falsetto is almost comical...
penkap75 : 4/9/2021 8:01 am : link
yet GnR is a great band.

Anthony Keidis cant sing for shit, but he works great for RHCP.

SLIM_ : 4/9/2021 8:23 am : link
but a bunch have talked about metal bands and Iron Maiden... I can't stand Jannick Gers. Maiden is my favorite group but the guy prances around stage like a jackass and he just doesn't fit the band. I realize that some of it is that he doesn't have a part on the older songs but I still can't stand him.
a lot of punk has insufferable singers
UConn4523 : 4/9/2021 8:30 am : link
Rise Against and Blink 182 come to mind for me - love the drumming, hate the singing.
Blind Melon.

Love the band and the music, but Shannon Hoon's (RIP) voice goes right through me.

I love Pearl Jam, and generally like Eddie Vedder, but there are a number of songs where his voice just doesn't work for me.

The Doors. I wouldn't say I hate Morrison's voice, but he was a pretty shitty singer.

The Beatles (sort of), Anything they let Ringo sing is an automatic pass for me (with the exception of "With a Little Help", but FU Paul for letting Ringo sing such a great song).
Bands you like with singers you hate is
Spyder : 4/9/2021 9:01 am : link
an oxymoron to me. If I hate the singer the band does not matter to me, I don't bother. Why should I, there are so many bands with great singers and great music, why waste any time with crappy vocals?

I guess Dream Theater comes close for me, LaBrie cheese aside, the band is great, and they seem to overcome the vox live, I have seen them twice.

But I never even bother with Guns and Roses or AC/DC, instant skip song, change station....

Lol, that song was a throwaway. It was put together quickly just for Ringo. They purposely wrote it with little vocal range. Funny fact, the line would you stand up and walk out on me was supposed to be something like would you throw ripe tomatoes at me but Ringo made them change it because he thought he'd be pelted with tomatoes if they played it live.
