He was a nasty bastard. After finishing watching, I realized that unlike many of his contemporaries, Steinbeck who I like far more than Hemingway was never mentioned. He was upcoming in Hemingway’s later years. I googled it and found they met once. As to be expected, things did not go well. Link might be of interest to those who watched the series.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
Mic drop.
Sorry about that. I just thought people were done with it.
Yeah - I never realized what a petty competitive dick he could be. That could have been the alcohol talking though? And, for sure he was suffering from different forms of mental illness. Alcohol + psychosis usually doesn't end well.
I am not making excuses for him but, I know some people who are the nicest people when sober. Then they drink and they become "Mr. Hyde".
Dave - I was also a little disappointed with the final product. It wasn't horrible but, it didn't live up to what I thought it would be. That could have been part of the problem. I was waiting for that documentary for about a month. Maybe I expected to much?

His writing, when it was good, redefined the art form. Towards the end, he had trouble stringing 4 good sentences together.
One line from Burns' Film sticks with me. He writes to his first wife Hadley, about For Whom the Bell Tolls -- "It's Selling like Frozen Daiquiris in Hell".
What I'd do for a nice cool Papa Doble right about now...

This guy had more serious concussions through his life (in a variety of ways) than most football players. That did not help,
+1
Plato - it was not a terrible documentary. It just showed a side of Hemingway that I never new existed. I have seen other Docs on him and they focused more on his adventures which I enjoyed. It might be worth checking out - I am glad I did.
