Gil Brandt's analysis of the top (5) Edge Rushers

Archer : 4/10/2021 1:10 pm
Gil Brandt uses pro comparisons to better understand the edge rushers pro potential
In the analysis there is a video of Phillips at his pro day
Phillips is smooth and twitchy if his medicals come back satisfactory I would like the Giants to draft him

Link - ( New Window )
phillips is clearly the best
GiantsFan84 : 4/10/2021 1:16 pm : link
he just has the serious medical issues
JPP compared to Rousseau
Rico : 4/10/2021 1:44 pm : link
Some of their measurables may be similar, but they seem like very different players to me. JPP has cat like quickness, and Rousseau seems stiff and not nearly as athletic.
Gil Brandt is 89 years old and still working in football!

Impressive career as an innovator in football:

I think his election to the hall of fame was well deserved!
Pierre Paul with 89 career sacks and 3 Super Bowls.

I guess Reese was right about this developmental player. Not only that but don't these numbers put Paul in the Hall?

Absolutely. There are a handful of these treasures left. Brandt is one in football. Clyde Frazier is one in basketball.

3?
I believe his top 100's have done pretty well the last few years too
Eric on Li : 4/10/2021 2:10 pm : link
I completely agree his work at his age is very impressive.

I think I agree with pretty much all his comps except Rousseau. He uses leverage to his advantage much more like Tuck. JPP was a different kind of freak.

All of these pass rushers are interesting and I hope need/value lineup for 1 of them with one of the first 2 picks.
His work at any age is superb.

One of the few I take seriously when it pertains to talent.

3?
Per the article, three Pro Bowls. Of course, not three rings.
IMO, JPP

Is not a HOF player yet.

Reese

Did ok in Round 1. The problem was basically every other round.
Kwity Paye

Personally reminds me so much of Trey Flowers in play style.

If he keeps playing up the way he’s been in Tampa Bay for a couple more years and they win another Super Bowl, he’d be in consideration. 30.5 sacks in three years and averaged a sack a game in 2019 when he came back after that car crash.
Archer: What medicals can you check on Phillips?
Big Blue Blogger : 4/10/2021 9:09 pm : link
Can his brain be meaningfully examined while he’s alive? If I were a GM, I would stay far, far away - partly because of the risk of draft capital and cap space, and partly because I don’t want to insert myself in a story that has an elevated risk of ending tragically.
I hope The Godfather has healed from his bad spill
RetroJint : 4/10/2021 9:34 pm : link
But he lost me the last time I listened to him . He was trashing Justin Fields , even mentioning that one team he knew gave Fields a fourth-round grade , which I find hard to believe , while lauding the Bears going with Andy Dalton , displaying the usual Texas bias .

JPP had 1 HOF year: 2011
A few factors make JPP a possible, eventual, HoF candidate.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/11/2021 10:25 am : link
First, and most important, he still seems to have a lot of good football left in him. Not saying he will play to 37 like Strahan, but he is still performing at a high level and seems to be having a genuinely good time. So he might pile up more stats and get a shot at a third ring. Second, he has overcome a lot of (admittedly self-inflicted) adversity. Third, there haven’t been many top-tier, two-way 4-3 DEs who have been able to play in space as well as he does.

He’s not in Canton yet. Just saying I wouldn’t rule him out by any means.
JPP arguably Reese is only great pick
Chip : 4/11/2021 10:34 am : link
Has a chance if he continues in the NFL for a few more years and another ring will help. Nicks is close but just did not play long enough and in the end Flowers and Apple just did not work out. Richburg I believe retired and Pugh just took a pay cut or was going to be released. After the 2nd round all picks were bad except Bradshaw who you might argue was Accorsi's team scouting still in place.
Rankings

At this position are all over the map. One of them has got to be there at 42

OBJ was a great pick. Went higher than expected and it was certainly justified. Injuries derailed his career, before that he seemed destined for the hall.
I don't think any of those guys are worth 11
Heisenberg : 4/12/2021 10:14 am : link
If the Giants are hell bent on Edge, I really hope they find a trade partner to trade down. I could talk myself into a lot of those Edge guys later in the first.
I hope he's right on Paye

Well deserved is what it is.

I wish Brandt was a print/online source instead of radio, though. His "...is what it is." verbal stall/placeholder is kind of distracting, IMO. I'd much rather just read his thoughts where he might be able to let the words flow instead of getting stuck trying to respond on command.
