NFT: Your favorite raid the fridge Sammich

Reveal your go to:

I've just finished a raid and made a sammich of very thinly sliced imported mortadella with dijon -- sometimes I add fresh mozzarella

I know I'm an amateur compared to some of you, but Yum!!

In attempt to ape the Sloppy Joe® sandwich from my hometown Town Hall Deli™, I go with turkey breast, Swiss cheese, cole slaw, and Russian dressing stuffed in between two slices of rye bread. Plenty of pickles on the side (Grillo's makes a nice store-bought pickle).

Not lame. Perfect. All the other responses are lame. No one has all of that in their fridge.

mortadella
pjcas18 : 4/10/2021 6:56 pm : link
strikes a nerve with me because one of my local sub shops puts mortadella on their Italian.

Mortadella DOES NOT belong on an Italian sub.

Not blaming them per se, it says it on the menu it comes with mortadella and they do have a version without it, but they call the version without it something else, and an Italian is ham, genoa, capicola and provolone.

you can do what you want with lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar, pepperoncini rings, whatever but don't mess with the meat.

Mortadella is like bologna to me, and it ruins the sandwich.

my go-to sandiwch that we usually have the ingredients for is black forest ham, american cheese, on a well toasted english muffin (has to be Thomas' and has to be crunchy) and a small spread of guldens spicy brown. The combination just works for me for some reason.

I understand that you don't like it, but it is italian charcuterie. So why wouldn't it be on a sandwich that is called "Italian."

prosciutto is also Italian charcuterie as is sopressata or italian roast beef - and more. None of them belong on an Itlaian sub (for me).

I'm not arrogant enough to say no one could put them on it people can put whatever they want on it on their own, but my understanding when a sub shop offers an Italian sub on a menu, my expectation is ham, genoa, capicola, and provolone.

When I first moved to my town in MA - with a lengthy italian history all the sub shops made it the way I suggested - expect one who added mortadella and it just doesn't work for me.

but of course people can do what they want.

One of these days I'll try it. Apparently it is an addicting sandwich combination.

But agree with above, if it’s leftovers then a slice of meatloaf with melted cheese on toasted bread is a big winner...
When I see "raid the fridge"...
EricJ : 4/11/2021 7:44 am : link
to me that means making a sandwich out of something OTHER THAN traditional lunch meat. So, for me it would be two things...

1. Leftover meatloaf - slice about 3/4 of an inch thick. Fry in a pan with some onions. Then put on toasted rye bread with cheese.

2. leftover chicken - make a chicken salad sandwich

Coleslaw and Russian dressing are great adds to any sandwich. They can make even a mediocre selection of leftovers enjoyable

When we were kids back in the 60s we would get that in our lunch box a lot. Even better with a slice of tomato.

Nowadays a simple bologna sandwich with mayo and a cup of black coffee does it for me.
