NFT: People commenting on celebrity social media accounts

eric2425ny : 4/11/2021 9:14 pm
I value the opinion of the members of this board and want to get your thoughts on this topic. I have a few family members and friends who constantly respond to celebrity Facebook posts with “you’re the best” or other random comments.

Do they not realize that these celebrities are 1.) Not reading or responding to any of these random posts and 2.) Depending on the status of the celebrity they most likely aren’t posting any of these things and have a social media person they are paying to placate those that respond to their fake posts?
they're your family members and friends -
Del Shofner : 4/11/2021 9:17 pm : link
why don't you ask them?

They're more likely to know than the randos on BBI.

OK, I do admit to "liking" Joni Mitchell posts on Facebook but hey - I never say anything on those threads!
Suggestion...
BamaBlue : 4/11/2021 9:18 pm : link
don't go on celebrity social media accounts. Let your family do what they want...
Haha
UConn4523 : 4/11/2021 9:18 pm : link
I think some realize it and hope to get retweeted or reposted and some are just completely consumed by being liked online. It’s a sickness for some.

There are some celebs who will interact with followers but even then I personally wouldnt do it. I couldn’t care less about famous people.

Ha, I don’t. But when people comment on these posts it often ends up coming up on my Facebook wall and I am almost embarrassed for them. If I talk to them about it it’s the equivalent of telling a 4 year old the Easter Bunny isn’t real lol.
Few years back, I was bored at work and

I made fun of the actor who plays DJ on Roseanne/The Conners on his Facebook page and he responded to every single comment I made, and he got pretty pissy with me. My comments were deleted and I was blocked but yep, sometimes these celebs do respond.

I hear Strahan is a pussy on Twitter, too. Him (or whoever runs it) would block anyone who posts anything close to negative about him.
......
Route 9 : 4/11/2021 9:25 pm : link
I've said this before but social media really exposes how boring celebs are.
Just ignore it
steve in ky : 4/11/2021 9:25 pm : link
Not worth letting something like that bother you

Definitely doesn’t bother me, it’s more comical than anything. I could see this coming up on Curb Your Enthusiasm lol.
Kind of like the

My wife’s cousin comments daily on Richard Marx posts on how much she loves him. Even random things like he’s at the beach and she says how much she loves the beach too. It’s so bizarre.

Ha ha, exactly! It’s so strange but funny at the same time.
Well
whozzat : 4/12/2021 1:16 am : link
If they're just posting "UR the best" and "thats kewl" type stuff... probably no harm in that. But if they're attacking other people who don't think everything the celeb does is "the best" or "kewl"... then it's probably time to disown them.

If it makes them happy to pander to celebs
montanagiant : 4/12/2021 3:48 am : link
Then let them be happy. Why would it bother you?
Why not ask everyone here why they
bradshaw44 : 4/12/2021 5:52 am : link
Desperately want to get their post of breaking news stickied at the top.

It’s a weird narcissist trait inside many people. They hope their post is seen by the celebrity and responded to. It’s why Facebook is a billion dollar plus company. It was built on the back of human ego. Sure there are other uses for it that are helpful and well meant. But at the end of the day it is ego driven.
No offense intended but this is something to talk about?
Giant John : 4/12/2021 6:53 am : link
Well if so I should mention I will be putting out garbage again today.
I agree it’s a strange phenomenon

I have a friend who’s one of these obsessive social media virtue signallers about working out, eating healthy, being very serious about his career, yadda yadda

He posts videos of himself working out almost daily...and also posts messages almost daily to some of the celebrity psycho workout crowd...David Goggins, Jocko Willink, a few of the big MMA guys, etc.

It’s pretty cringeworthy...it’s along the lines of “go get it brother! Your team is ready to follow our leader and crush some Monday!!”

Certainly nothing to be that bothered by, he’s still a buddy, it’s just a weird obsession. I’m sure some pychologist could explain why some people feel compelled to do it
Often times, people post on those threads
RC in MD : 4/12/2021 8:10 am : link
or respond to specific posts so that they get some kind of a response not from the celebrities themselves but more from the community of people, who are also following the threads/posts. Whether it's to feel affirmed or just be part of a community, a lot of people want some level of affirmation from people with similar/common interests. It's no different from us posting on BBI whether it's sharing our Mock drafts or posting on RIP or Thank you threads.

You can laugh about it, but if it gives them some sense of community with other fans, what's the harm? I mean, we spend time on BBI with a bunch of losers (I say that affectionately, you losers) sharing our thoughts on all manner of things.

I agree in part. The big difference for me is on social media, for the most part, your name is attached to what you say. BBI can be as anonymous as you want it to be, and for most people their names are completely unknown.

I'm shocked, absolutely shocked by what some people I know post publicly with their names attached to it. I post a fair amount on BBI with a mostly private profile, on social media platforms I don't post anything.

Oh...no doubt on how crazy it is that people will knowingly post what they post on a public social media threads/posts with their names fully displayed whether it's Facebook, Twitter, Insta, etc., especially racist, misogynistic, and just outright terrible things.

While we may be more anonymous here on BBI, it still doesn't take away from people posting on BBI because they want some level of affirmation from other anonymous people (just as they do on the more ubiquitous social media platforms). You can see based on people's strong responses to threads or responses within threads to know how emotionally invested we are in what we post and the responses we get, especially from anonymous people. BBI is just an older form of social media, but it's social media nonetheless.

Social media is such a large but twisted part of our current world. I cannot understand how involved in it some people get. What they are seeking is a mystery to me. But I do see the aftershocks, mostly with my daughter (24 yrs old). She grew up with it, I did not. It has been a HUGE issue in our family for over 10 years.

About social media in general, has anyone seen the Netflix show "The Social Dilemma"? I saw it a few weeks ago and it was about 1 1/2 hours, one time show, very sobering and scary about how Big Tech manipulates and preys on people. Especially people who are looking desperately for inclusion and validation. Worth a watch, especially if you are a parent with young children.

BBI social media? Absolutely. A lot of this thread was not about whether you DO social media, more about the topics (replying to celebrities), or the time/intensity that you put in. IMO, things done in moderation (except heroin or murder?) is unlikely to cause much damage to you or others.

lol. Talk about random.
My first reaction is that it's stupid
PaulBlakeTSU : 4/12/2021 10:10 am : link
but is it any different than screaming at a sporting event?

When you go to a game and scream from the stands, the players can't hear you, especially if you yell particular things. You do it anyway.

But when you and several thousand people do it, it gets loud enough and the players get a general sense of whether they are being supported or booed.

Celebs might not read the comments but it makes your family members feel good to write out support. And if thousands of people are posting positive (or negative) reactions, then the celebrity might get a general sense of that support/derision.

The Social Dilemma is great. I found it interesting that the “founders” of it had no idea what impact it would have, particularly the negative aspects. I’m glad I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s before all of this crap got started. I’m going to keep my little boy away from it as long as I possibly can.

My daughter (step actually) had some 'daddy' issues going into her teens due to a crappy biological father. Social media wrecked her for years even though at the time she thought it was the greatest thing. It does just the opposite like the "Social Dilemma" said. It was like heroin to her. She was and to some degree, still addicted. She battles anxiety and depression, low self esteem, etc constantly. I blame her father yes, but social media has been exponentially worse. Yes, keep your kids as far from it for as long as you can. And if any kids out there have issues already, especially girls, it is far worse. Good luck.
I don't do the social media thing never was interested

But have had a few coworkers who were and would always talk about random posts.

Funny story from one of them he followed Will Ferrell and one day he walks into my office almost crying from laughing. Apparently Ferrell posted on his twitter page that he just got out of the shower and his wife walks in and catches him blow drying his junk, she askes what the hell are you doing and he said heating up dinner. LOL
