NFT: Rangers deadline

UGADawgs7 : 4/12/2021 12:13 pm
Is anybody hearing anything about what they are expected to do? I saw earlier Dregger tweeted they may be a team looking at using extra cap space to gain assets?
My impression is that the Rangers
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 4/12/2021 12:23 pm : link
have very limited cap space this year
Not sure about that
pjcas18 : 4/12/2021 12:27 pm : link
the Rangers are one of the team actively "shopping" their cap space.
We have approx
Carl in CT : 4/12/2021 12:37 pm : link
$9m.
Yeah
UGADawgs7 : 4/12/2021 12:48 pm : link
I think Dregger mentioned around $9M but just was wondering what that means fully. Like would they be a 3rd team to take on a bad contract to try and gain assets? Is that all they’d be doing this deadline?
Canadiens
pjcas18 : 4/12/2021 1:25 pm : link
did this a couple years ago.

the Habs traded Simon Bourque (a nothing player making no money) to Winnipeg and got Steve Mason (bad contract) and Joel Armia (top 6 forward), a 7th round pick and a 4th round pick in the next draft.

It pays to take bad contracts if you have the space.
Rangers sign Zac Jones

Maybe they have a deal in place to trade Smith to make room? per the twitter...he is expected to join the Rangers (not Hartford) after quarantine.

I sure hope Anak has not hijacked 'Rangers' Central'. If Gorton is fishing for picks, I hope it is tactical and targeted.
Putting it here as this is most recent NYR thread

@StateBoy_Steven on twtr poses a relevant question:

What are the odds that Kravtsov, Laf, Kappo, Panarin, and Buch (least to longest tenured) are all on top 3 lines, with Kreider and Blackwell battling it out as 6th wing?

Hard to justify keeping Vitaly on the 4th line. He's been a revelation. His adjustment to the NHL game in just his 3rd (?) is remarkable, never mind he's an old man at 24 by pj's criteria. (:

Contracts given that stand out as a bit wtf in hindsight are Kreider's and Trouba's, but those things have a way of evening out.

?? Kravtsov is 21 and my point was he is older than Kakko and Lafreniere when you said "he picked up the NHL game faster" than the latter 2.

He was in the US, failed to make the team and sent to the AHL - wasn't happy there and was sent back to Russia for a year was my point. Not calling him old.

I did call Blackwell old though, some people think he's "young and cheap" and he's more like a journeyman and cheap.

NYR were willing to mutually terminate Tony DeAngelo’s contract to allow him to pass through waivers and sign as a free agent. Montreal believed to very interested as early as this weekend. However, DeAngelo opted not to accept. He will be bought out of his contract this summer.
Financially
pjcas18 : 4/12/2021 7:00 pm : link
it made ZERO sense for TDA to agree to mutually terminate his contract even if his agent found him a better deal (which I doubt).

If DeAngelo agreed to terminate w/ #NYR
, he would lose $1M this year + $5.3M next year ($6.3M total).

If he's bought out, he'll lose $3.53M (2/3 of next year's $5.3M Salary).

Waiting for the buyout saves him $2.76M

just one correction, PJ

Kravtsov wasn't sent back to Russia, he left on his own against the Rangers' wishes.

The (: was part of the original, was needling you, pj. That is all.
I choose to stay glued to his remarkable play, so early on, even if he is so much older! LOL I hope it continues and grows.
Deadline deals

as long as we're cribbing from twitter, Mollie Walker:

Speaking with #NYR GM Jeff Gorton right now, says they made "a number of calls, took a number of calls, went through a number of scenarios" today, but no deal.

"We have a plan in place and nothing that came along was going to add to what we wanted to do."
I'm good with that. Let the season play out now.

lol, my only criticism of Kravtsov ever has been how the Rangers handled him. I've been a fan of his for years.

I think most of the young Rangers can be stars.
Pj...
PwndPapi : 4/12/2021 11:52 pm : link
To be fair, I don't recall anyone saying Blackwell was "young". Those of us opposed to dealing him don't believe he's blocking anyone from top 6 minute just yet. He's a team player, is well liked by the team and is cheap.

The last part can't be overstated considering Buch and Zib are due hefty raises and Kakko will be due a new deal before long. Even more so if we are planning on making a run at at Eichel in the off-season. That $9 mill isn't going to go far and even if we manage to replace Smith with Jones.

Blackwell is worth more than a 4th round pick to the NYR is what I'm saying.
Someone did

this is from the trade deadline thread:

You're answering a question with another question.

What could they get for an overachieving, young, cheap player?....

Unless I misunderstood.

Blackwell is the kind of player who is more valuable to the Rangers than a team who would acquire him otherwise I would trade him in a second.

I don't think his success is sustainable, i don't think he's a top 6 player and I think he will be replaced if not by the end of this year, then before next year in the top 6.

So my point was if you consider him a bottom 6 player (really a 4th liner) and he's playing top 6 minutes right now with top 6 production - and you get a decent offer - you take it.
I really hope theres a way to keep Buch
Bear vs Shark : 4/13/2021 9:07 am : link
On one hand, I really disagree with Anak being so hellbent on trading him, but on the other hand, I completely see where he's coming from.

Might as well get something for him as opposed to nothing. But he's really turning into a solid, solid player.
Buch's point production per game
PwndPapi : 4/13/2021 11:23 am : link
Has increased in each of the last three seasons and up near a ppg this season. He has improved his positioning and work in the defensive zone, which was always a knock on him. So much so, that he's now playing minutes on the PK. He's become (or close to) a complete NHL forward.

The only way I'd deal Buch is in a package for Eichel.
I don't think any Ranger is untouchable
Greg from LI : 4/13/2021 11:32 am : link
Maybe Fox, that's about it. It all depends on the deal, though. Buchnevich in an Eichel deal? OK. Buchnevich for picks or prospects? No.
Agree Greg
PwndPapi : 4/13/2021 2:32 pm : link
The franchise is young and plateauing. Continued growth will come mostly from the maturity and improvement from Laf, Kakko, Igor and Fox/Miller. And minor tweaks here and there.

We already have a zillion picks and prospects to backfill. At some point you have to identify a core you're moving forward with. Dealing Buch for a draft pick who may (likely won't) turn out to be as good as Buch is now 3-5 years down the line isn't improvement. It's spinning our wheels in the mud.

Pretty much a longshot at making the playoffs
jv : 4/13/2021 2:47 pm : link
but these next 4 games are key. Gotta go 4-0 vs Devils. No more Zajac or Palmieri.

Also of note. Zac Jones officially signed. He doesn't have to quarantine and skated this morning. No word on when he cracks the lineup. He'll also wear #6 last worn by fan favorite Dylan McIlrath. 2 polar opposite defensemen.
#6 isn't
arniefez : 4/13/2021 2:54 pm : link
Gilles Marotte anymore? No more Captain Crunch?
A few more comments from Gorton via Carpi
ColHowPepper : 4/13/2021 4:39 pm : link
in The Athletic:
Quote:
Gorton was thorough, as usual, in seeing if there was a hockey move out there that may have made sense. The Rangers, though, aren’t going hell-bent after a playoff spot, nor should they be at this stage. [Emphasis supplied]....

Even with the Rangers four points out of playoff spot with 15 games remaining — Boston has the final berth, and two games in hand — Gorton wasn’t going the rental route. He didn’t see the sense in bringing in a player, or players, who would take ice time away from the likes of Vitali Kravtsov, Alexis Lafrenière, Kaapo Kakko, Filip Chytil, K’Andre Miller and so on.

The goal has always been to make the playoffs, but it was never playoffs-or-bust — nor could it be with the mission statement laid out in February of 2018.

Then he made some observations about how the team has been playing recently, which to my mind served as a relatively unqualified endorsement of the job Quinn is doing.

Quote:
“Our focus has been that we’re trying to get better all the time,” Gorton said. “We’re trying to play as many meaningful games, take one day at a time, as we can, and let the chips fall where they may. We’re, as you know, in a very difficult division and we’ve hung in there pretty well. … I’m happy that our games right now are meaningful, our guys are developing — you see these young kids get better and I feel like the team is playing as well as we have maybe all year.

“You’re seeing the strides they’re making, you’re seeing the opportunities they’re getting, and it’s hard not to feel good about the Rangers’ future and where we’re headed.”

Other than the virtual GMs here who wanted to deal Buch, as well as Strome, I sense the balance of forces here is probably fairly aligned with Gorton's comments, with some notable exceptions. Aside from the Howden love, some of the unnecessarily meddling (in my view) in line shuffling, and his robotic responses in pressers--along with whatever stuff is going on with Zib--if anything-- I pretty much am.

Expansion draft: Carpi thinks Gauthier will be exposed as Francis drafted him as first rounder when at CAR...and likely to lose another wing? Bitetto and TDA the likely d-men left open, not sure how the timing of the expansion draft relative to the buy-out of the latter.
