Joe Judge assembling unprecedented Giants coaching staff

GFAN52 : 4/12/2021 6:22 pm

Joe Judge has assembled the largest coaching staff in Giants franchise history and what, unofficially, is believed to be the largest football staff in the NFL heading into the 2021 season. Including Judge, there are 25 designated spots on this staff, and this does not include strength and conditioning personnel. Nor does it include Pat Flaherty, a former Giants offensive line coach, hired by Judge as a consultant.

A part of me worries about too many chefs in the kitchen, but I trust JJ.
That's an

increase of 7 coaches over Shurmer's staff, not including Flaherty and the strength and conditioning staff. Wow

I'd leave Mara out of the equation- it's not like many of us have been enthralled with his hiring choices or football judgment over last 10 years.
Is it possible that there will be efficiency issues and too many

Of course we all hope

that he made a great pick with Judge. Especially with all the power and responsibility he seems to be giving him

Yeah you have to have a solid chain of command and people are about chain of command for something like this to work. I'm hoping these additional people to give more bandwidth to help with technique and total understanding of the system vs the game plan/strategy/etc

Not for me. He wants as much info as possible and knows he can’t get it all himself. He’s going to delegate responsibility and weigh all options. He wouldnt be doing this if he felt it would create an atmosphere with too many people getting in the way.

And I wonder if a lot of this has to do with lessons learned during COVID, and how much less time he gets to spend with the players.

I doubt Judge will tolerate either.

Judge seems to have history with most of these guys and came up alongside them. There's at least reason to believe they're all on the same page. If not, I think Judge has shown the ability to make changes on the fly and weed out non-believers. Probably the biggest concern is still Garrett.

I wonder why he kept Garrett to begin with.
I don’t see how anyone can’t be optimistic about Judge

I don’t think there’s too many chefs
Simms11 : 4/12/2021 6:58 pm : link
in the kitchen under Judge. I’m fairly certain that he’ll have expectations and responsibilities laid out for each. I like the committee approach, especially on the offensive side. Sometimes the best ideas or approaches come from coaches other then coordinators.
UConn makes a good point

Maybe The Covid 19 experience along with the impact of the Union contract limitting practices is forcing a new way of doing business.
Individual attention, individual teaching maybe requires more individuals LOL
With no salary cap for coaches
myquealer : 4/12/2021 7:19 pm : link
it seems teams should assemble the best staffs possible, and so long as they're all on the same page, more coaches means more individual attention for players. The bigger the better.
A complete guess
DonQuixote : 4/12/2021 7:21 pm : link
but I think he is going to get people he likes in the building and promote from within as others move on.
another way to think about this
CMicks3110 : 4/12/2021 7:25 pm : link
is Judge is constantly interviewing coaches, like teams do with players, and that he found a bunch he likes, and if they perform they get to stay on, if not, they can leave. It's building a coaching bench, so if a patrick graham or Jason Garrett gets hired for head coaching job elsewhere, there will be a slew of personnel ready to step in, vs. having to have the players learn all new systems.
It seems the additional coaches responsibilities
mfsd : 4/12/2021 7:27 pm : link
will generally focus on game planning and, I suspect, breaking down film.

Doesn’t just mean breaking down film of next week’s opponent, but can include studying tendencies and trends across the league, studying what the best college programs are doing, and self scouting to identify weaknesses that are holding the Giants back

I like the fact Judge is surrounding himself with a lot of guys he has a prior relationship with in these roles. He really is much more of a CEO coach than the Giants have had since Coughlin

Also, starts building a bench of coaching talent for when guys like Garrett and Graham eventually leave
I’m waiting for Judge to hire the Krav Maga hand fighting expert

I hope Graham is here like BB somehow was here forever in the '80s, Haha. One can dream. Graham is a HC in waiting.

I think pretty much everyone is optimistic about Judge. We just don't know if we're right, yet.

Pretty sure Tampa had 28 coaches last season
With so many young players, and such limited time
CT Charlie : 4/12/2021 8:01 pm : link
because of NFLPA and Covid, the more personal attention the better. Also, if coaches are good and receive promotion offers from other teams, it's important to have backup with every position group.
I think it’s sort of a college thing.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 4/12/2021 8:09 pm : link
The big programs like Bama (where Judge was) and Clemson have massive coaching staffs, including former head coaches filling the roles of “analysts”.
It's a practice hack as well
AcesUp : 4/12/2021 8:19 pm : link
CBA limits the amount of practices teams can run through training camp and in-season. A larger coaching staff allows you to split up your players and run multiple practices simultaneously (ie. have the 1s running reps on one side of the field and 2s on the other, etc). It allows you to maximize the number of reps, even among the guys buried on the depth chart. Helps in development and player evaluation.

Idea is that a large staff could also allow JJ to adjust work and time consumption of the staff in order to allow them to have more family time in season. Everybody know the season is a grind. This would help the actual messaging about the importance of family while also drawing a favorable opinions to pull in quality coaches who might favor working conditions over just straight titles and money.

Garrett reeks of Mara. I think he's getting his next OC from one of the guys on the staff now once JG is let go, if he in fact is.
