Super Bowl Win over the Bills

Now Mike in MD : 4/13/2021 1:01 pm
I was watching the 30 for 30 on the Bills, and I found two things interesting.

First, I completely forgot about the near strip sack in the end zone by Smith. Watching the replays, I have no idea have Hos held on to that football so that it was only a safety.

Second, they mentioned that during that season, Norwood was something like 1 for 7 on FGs over 40 yards on grass fields that season. I also incorrectly recalled the FG as being 43 vs. 47. With those things in mind, it's really not that surprising that Norwood missed.
Masterful plan by Parcells and Belichick.

T.O.P. and allowing them 100 rushing yards, then making those receivers pay every time they touched the ball.

Complimentary football.

I agree.

On Feb 13, 2022 at SoFi stadium Daniel Jones outduels Josh Allen, leading the Giants to a 31 - 24 win over the Bills!

I was quite sure that Norwood would miss that FG.
Red Dog : 4/13/2021 1:10 pm : link
It was about 5 yards beyond his effective range.

The bottom line was that the GIANTS made the plays on both offense and defense and the Bills didn't. The last key play was tackling the Bills back where the ball was placed for the snap. If that tackle had been missed, the Bills would have won the game.

Everson Walls made a huge tackle that final drive.
Thank the lord the Bills ran out of time

at the end of that game.

Superb job of coaching by Giants...
Gotta admit. I thought the Giants were going to have
Blue21 : 4/13/2021 1:14 pm : link
a very disapointing finish. I didn't realize how bad Norwood had been on grass.

Most overrated defensive game plan in history-Giants played keep away. Reich didn't laces out-no one ever mentions it!

Thurman Thomas had 135 yards rushing. The Bills had over 160 yards rushing. The Bills basically screwed up by not running more. Thomas rushed only 15 times.

It kind of reminds me of Rams vs Patriots in 2001 when Faulk was the best player on the field but the Rams refused to feed him the ball.

I'm sure Bill had the Bills (and the Rams for that matter) thinking that something was there in the passing game, and then shut it down immediately after the snap.

Hostetler holding onto that ball
Ben in Tampa : 4/13/2021 1:27 pm : link
Is one of the most underrated plays in Super Bowl history, in terms of “what if” moments

Probably only second to the Seahawks throwing the ball against the Pats versus running it on the goal line

Hostetler took a serious beating over the course of that week.

First in San Fran, then in the SB. All in the period of 7 days.
If you ever meet Sean Landetta

He will tell you that his last punt pinning the Bills deep was the key to winning that game. I've met him twice, and its really all he ever talks about

Just as much a key to that game as was his phantom punt against the Bears in the 1985 playoff game on 1/5/1986!
WR Mark Ingram had an incredible play for a first down in that game

but didn't seem to know it despite these stats you mention. Their last play before the FG was a 2nd and 4 from our 40 with :29 left and no timeouts. They ran the ball. Good call in the sense that we were giving them the run and they got 11 but it took :20 seconds off the clock. They seemed very content to just get in FG range rather than make it a reasonable kick for their guy.

On a side note it is amazing how many people especially non-Giants fans think Norwood missed a chip shot. I remember a few years later (still pre-Google) arguing with a guy who insisted it was a 27 yarder. Memory plays tricks on people. Norwood was anointed this massive goat and people just went with it. Kind of like how some people think the Sox win if Buckner fields the grounder and forget that Stanley threw a WP like one minute earlier and the game was tied.

uhh..Most overrated? Maybe you're going overboard a bit? That Bills team scored 51 pts 1 week prior. They scored points in bunches that season. Yes TOP was huge, but the Giants still held them to 19 pts.
I can't remember that far back
Bill L : 4/13/2021 3:09 pm : link
does anyone know the rationale for picking a QB (Hostetler) in the third round at that time?
BB gets a ton of credit
LIbud : 4/13/2021 3:11 pm : link
and his defensive game plan for that game is in the HOF. I always thought the Giants offensive game plan won that game. The Bills offense was incredible that season and even was in that game, Kelly was an awesome QB in that system especially, Thomas and the receivers were as well. They went with what they did best - high octane, no huddle, and had a ton of weapons, and didn't deviate in the SB. why would they. yes, they should have run it more but who can blame them for their plan.

The Giants offense did what they did best that season and in that game too. Don't turn it over (Hoss in the end zone thank God), control the clock and execute. The offense outplayed (barely) a very good Bills defense and scored when they had to, every time. Also, Landetta was great in that game too.

17 points actually as the Bills scored a safety on defense.

The Giants Offense ability to convert on third down in second half was huge.
Norwood chocked, plain and simple
Stan in LA : 4/13/2021 3:39 pm : link
Perfect weather conditions, on a grass field that was the equivalent of turf.

It had plenty of distance, but under the pressure he pushed it.

That's it.

Lucky enough to be there with my dad
tpgiantsfan : 4/13/2021 3:43 pm : link
It was one of the best moments of my life. We sat with a few Bills fans (nice people) and when they saw where the FG was spotted they said Norwood wouldn't make it. They had seen enough of Norwood during the year and were practically getting up to leave as he was kicking it.
Both what Hoss did

and even more so Ingram are so underrated.
The coaching surprise was , with :08 seconds left, our D gassed and Bills with momentum ,they didn’t run one more play like a 5 yard quick out. A pick was unlikely, an incomplete still gives 3-4 seconds, but a completion and a step OOB makes it a 42 yarder with a good shot of skimming the inside of the upright or ricocheting off it and bouncing in.
The Norwood..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/13/2021 5:09 pm : link
take has always been a barometer of football IQ.

He was a below average kicker with a mediocre leg, who was really bad on grass from distance.

I've heard it called a chip shot, a shank, a choke job. All are just ignorant comments.

kickers back then were not what we see of them today. Think of all the history GB has had and yet, it wasn't until the 2000's when a FG over 50 yards was made in a playoff game at Lambeau.
Norwood
Enzo : 4/13/2021 5:24 pm : link
got more criticism than he probably deserved because his kick had plenty of leg and went wide by only a few feet...so the assumption is that he missed a makeable kick. If it had come up short, people would be more inclined to say it was out of his range.

This is a good point. Norwood had less than 50% chance of making that kick, so why not risk getting more yards there?

Super Bowl highlights
Fox : 4/13/2021 6:12 pm : link
The SB highlights always show the kick from angles to make it look like he barely missed. Watching it live from the end zone camera it was clear it was going wide pretty much immediately.

As for the people remembering it as a chip shot, I blame Ray Finkle and conflation.

It really was a matter of seconds because you could imagine the Bills trying to pick up more yards if there were say...10 seconds.

And like you suggest, a handful more yards and maybe Norwood nails it.

But alas, they didn't, Norwood missed, the Giants won and all was good in the football world!
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/13/2021 6:34 pm : link
To claim Norwood 'choked' is absurd. It was a 47 yard kick on grass @ night to win the Super Bowl. That'd be a tough kick in 2021.
Wasn't this the only SB with no turnovers?
dannysection 313 : 4/13/2021 8:03 pm : link
Maybe there's been one since?

That 30 for 30 was great, as were the Bill's fans in forgiving Norwood.

Can you imagine, as a Giant's fan, losing four SB's in a row?

Brutal....
