That 35-0 asskicking sank me already in week 1. I bought into the hype that nyg was ready to challenge Dallas. I think Dallas got some extra motivation from it as well. I wanted someone to kick Emmitt Smith for him waving goodbye to one of the Giants dbs as he sprinted 63 yards for a td.

My dad called me right before that happened. He said, "Are you watching this shit?... oh no, there he goes again!"
I forgot how ugly a ball Dave Brown threw. I can't ever imagine scouting him and saying this is the guy I need. Now, of course, a lot of that is the old hindsight is perfect vision, but man did that ball wobble on him time and time again.
Second, I miss Jim Gordon and I especially miss Artie Lange's standup routine imitating Jim Gordon on the radio calls and how he suffered as a gambler because of the mistakes and delayed calls. With that said, he had a magical voice for radio.
Damn we still had a championship roster around him
and Danny Kanell flashed very early. I pray that history is not repeating itself...
Jones is a far better QB than Brown. Brown threw deep passes that the receivers had to call for a fair catch to have any chance. He was a tough QB, no doubt about it but Jones is the far superior QB.
RE: Damn we still had a championship roster around him
I mean that team had so many good players its crazy compared to our current team...lol.
NO... That is a fallacy,. We had aging players. Mike Sherrard was an injury waiting to happen and often did. Hampton was already beat up and the Oline was slipping. We became a huge joke with Reeves and his every ex Bronco is a new Giant mantra.
was that if you watch him on TV and if he throws a long pass, the ball leaves the TV screen because he couldn't really gun-it and had to put so much air under his long balls.
Also remember the supposed next great combination of Dave Brown to Derek Brown?
Those Giants teams had the worst receivers I've ever seen
Thomas Lewis himself dropped at least half a dozen touchdowns. I couldn't even count the times he tripped over his own feet, got blocked or muffed on a possession down. If he had even average talent around him, not to mention an asshole for a coach, his history may have been very different.
RE: Damn we still had a championship roster around him
who took a lot more abuse from fans than he deserved. He was in a difficult situation from the get-go, a local kid replacing an all-time Giant (Phil Simms) and he didn't get much help from Dan Reeves. I think some of the crap he took was a response to the perceived lack of respect shown Simms by Reeves and the organizations. Brown always took the high road and still does when talking about those years.

I remember being at a draft party with a bunch of friends (all fans of other teams). I had my Mel Kiper Blue draft guide plus all of my own rankings. The Giants pick Thomas Lewis, rated #21 by Kiper. Not #21 as in the 21st best prospect but the #21 WR rated in his guide. The Giants took him in the first round.. UGH!
Mel Kiper Jr., the ESPN draft analyst, ranked Lewis, who bypassed his final year of eligibility, 18th among wide receivers. Joel Buchsbaum of Pro Football Weekly had him 20th and Jim Sabo, who publishes the Ourlad's Guide, ranked him 38th.
...I never liked that pick up, I know a lot of people here did. But George Young paying paying top dollars an injury prone player like he was never injured was stupid, IMO.

Exactly. He was put in an almost impossible to succeed situation.
I still wonder sometimes if he hadn't gotten hurt in week 6 of the '97 season opening the door for Kannell if Brown who was playing better under Fassel's offense would've led them to the playoffs too.
Watching those archive clips, Brown had a strange delivery throwing the ball. It's like a strange combo between a sidearm and a regular throwing motion plus he cocked his arm almost all the way backwards. Maybe it's just me.

What was that, the season ended on like the 2nd or 3rd play from scrimmage when Emmitt Smith ran for a 95 yard TD or something?

Dave Brown never threw for 300 yards in a game. The closest he came was 299 in a loss at Seattle.
I still believe that part of the problem with Brown was he was one of the 1st Spurrier QBs to come out in the draft and had inflated numbers in that system. It took a while for NFL evaluators to realize Spurrier QBs sucked as pros. He had the size, and he was surprisingly athletic & was a decent runner (we all know about trucking Deion). To be fair, he didn't have much talent beyond Hampton to work with, but once Fassel couldn't fix him, he was done.

Great point about Spurrier QBs. If anything that system may have been ahead of its time...I remember it focusing on spreading the field and getting the ball out quickly. I wonder how it would have done with the "pick" plays getting more leeway these days.
I remember seeing Brown play in person for the first time. After seeing Simms a couple times, the difference was jarring. The short and intermediate stuff was OK, but he really struggled with the deep ball.
Carved himself out a good career though. 60 starts over 10 seasons.
1. Calloway being open in acres of space for what should have been a walk in TD in the corner I was seated in the fourth quarter. Brown throwing a wobbling moon ball 42 yards downfield that Calloway had to wait on. I remember being excited about the big play, but thinking I couldn't believe an NFL QB could throw like that.
2. After Brown ran in the TD to cap that drive, he turned and threw the ball up into the crowd. It landed 4 or 5 rows short of me. That was a better spiral and a better throw than the one to Calloway. BigBlueVCR - 1995 Cardinals - ( New Window )
Feeling pretty good after 6 straight wins to end the season. Brown had played kind of "okay" and it felt good to beat the Cowboys.
In retrospect, the Giants had been carried by their defense and had beaten some really bad teams: 1-10 Houston Oilers, 2-10 Redskins, 2-12 Bengals, 7-8 Eagles (who were not playing to save Rich Kotite's job).
They did beat Belichick's 9-4 Browns, but even the win over Dallas wasn't all that impressive. The Cowboys sat Emmitt and pulled Aikman at halftime with literally nothing to play for.
Also in retrospect, Dave Brown stunk and any optimism about the team or his career vanished very quickly in 1995.

I love how thats the pass they use to highlight hot handed DB

LOL {Cry}
I don't think it is... but at this point we can only hope and pray this is not the path we are on...

Disagree bigly. We had some players who used to be good but were old and injured.

And guess what, Sherrard was always injured.

That's how it felt to me at the time.
screw that "put in a bad situation" crap...awful QB
