Pat Traina picks for Giants in beat reporter mock-She takes?

Producer : 4/14/2021 2:23 pm
Every year Locked On Draft has beat reporters pick for their teams. The assignment is to pick who they think the team should select. They do two teams a day. The first ten went like this:

1. Jax - Lawrence
2. NYJ - Wilson
3. SFO - Fields
4. Atl - Lance
5. Cin - Chase
6. Mia - Pitts
7. Det - Waddle
8. Car - Sewell
9. Den - Owusu-Koramoah
10. Dal - Surtain

And with Devonta Smith and Parsons still on the board Pat Traina takes...

Rashawn Slater

I actually think I agree with her. I am not as high on Smith as many on here, who by the way was selected next by the Eagles reporter. I mean I think he's great but not blue chip. I like the idea of fixing this damn line once and for all.

The next few picks went like this by the way.

11. NYG - Slater
12. Phi - Smith
13. SD - Darrisaw
14. Min - Paye

eg, I'd be surprised if Slater is graded above Smith.

There no possible way Slater is graded above Smith. Smith had one the best seasons in CFB history at WR, he got BETTER after Waddle went down against the best corners in the SEC. He played big, in big games. He could be number 1 on a few teams boards. He had a more dominant 2020 season at WR than Lawrence had at QB.

There is nobody who has Smith number one overall. Are you listening to what beat reporters are saying? Most have him as the third WR, never mind overall player. I think you are blinded by his college production and Heisman. A lot of these college stand outs fail. remember Archie Griffin? Charles White? Peter Warrick? Charles Rogers?

Better, productive prospects have been busts. There is a reason most think Smith will be there for the Giants.
Most? I prefer Waddle to Smith but I am not an expert nor in the majority many are concerned with Waddle's ankle. . The only knock on Smith is his weight and I am not bothered by that at all. He played against corners that will be drafted in the first round, they knew the ball was going to Smith in BIG games and Smith DOMINATED them anyway. His play is beautiful, he is an artist on the field. Football Silk. Marvin Harrison.

I wouldn't complain if they pick Smith. It will be exciting to watch and anticipate. I think I prefer Waddle and Slater, but I won't bitch about adding Smith or Parsons.

ryanmkeane : 4/14/2021 4:43 pm : link
that would not be ideal
I'm not at all sold on Smith either.
Red Dog : 4/14/2021 4:47 pm : link
Would really prefer to trade down and get another second day pick.

Then work on the OL, get another corner and an edge rusher, and worry about RB and more depth on both lines on day 3.
i think Vera-Tucker
ryanmkeane : 4/14/2021 4:57 pm : link
can be just as good of a guard if not better than Slater. taking Slater there with some of guys available such as Smith and Parsons would be somewhat brutal IMO
The Only Thing That Is Clear
Trainmaster : 4/14/2021 5:27 pm : link
is that BBI will explode regardless of who the Giants pick at #11.

Unless the Giants get a "King's Ransom" in a trade down and still get a clear top 10 player, a big group will be unhappy.

I've cooled significantly

on virtually anything Traina has to say about pretty much everything. That said, there's a real possibility that Smith benefits from a pro S&C regimen, nutrition program and complete lifestyle change from being a college student. Another 5-10 pounds would do him a lot of good without compromising the ability to use his athleticism. Plus, according to pretty much everyone, he's a very hard worker so the character question - something big on Judge's list - has the needle pointing up.

And there's no doubt he'll have the whole thing clocked with Saban, Holmon Wiggins and David Balou. If he's there at 11, you take him.

That is a lot of muscle for someone his size. People have a limit they can add muscle. I think people over estimate how much muscle pro players can add especially in a very intense program like Alabama. Now strength is a different story.

I mean, he's 6'1" so his frame can take a bit more bulk. Not a ton - but 7-8 pounds right in the middle - would make some difference and not compromise what he's good at. A pro S&C team will put him right where he needs to be.
And I'll add this
Bricktop : 4/14/2021 6:24 pm : link
He's definitely going to be asked to block in this offense and block well. More strength and a bit more size is on the menu.

Clearly. Though the blocking thing is going to be a work in process thing at the next level.

But putting him in motion and clearing out one side of the field with as many defenders he can take with him will be helpful if Barkley can regain his generational speed...

He is clearly the best player available. Can't let shiny objects distract the right evaluation in terms of elevating this team. The Giants have been to five super bowls and have had a hall of famer on defense on each of those teams. Not a single offensive player is in the HOF from any of those teams. This team still lacks a talented leader on defense ala Carson, LT and Strahan.

Assuming the Giants are ok with Parson's character issues, this really isn't even close ...

You know Eli will be in the hall of fame right
One thing is clear. There are going to be a lot of unhappy BBIers

How much more "pro" does it get than Alabamas? There's definitely the age x-factor, but it's not like Smith is Will Hernandez coming from UTEP where the S&C program is night and day compared to an NFL one.

He's from Bama, that's as close to pro as it gets
From Sys write up on guards and centers re: Slater
Ned In Atlanta : 4/14/2021 10:36 pm : link
“I really see a Zack Martin type situation here. Not sure how many people truly realize how important he was and still is to that offensive line. DAL had a top 5 OL for a few years and he was a key part of that. Even if Slater is the NYG pick at #11 to play guard, I would be more than fine with it. This line absolutely needs to be better inside and outside if they want to avoid being the 31st ranked offense (second to last). “Wait until day 2” just because you don’t like the idea of using this pick on a guard is, with all due respect, completely foolish. If the line can get to a dominant level, imagine what happens with Barkley and the offense. “

The current starting guards are Shane Lemieux and Will Hernandez. And the presumptive starting RT is a 2nd year late third round pick out of uconn who is unproven. The OL needs good players

Gettleman has pretty much said Peart is the presumptive starter at RT which I for one am happy with. I sure like Solder as a swing with a year off.

I do believe they will grab a OG. If Gates goes down, Lemieux maybe shifts to C, and hopefully we'll still be good at that spot. Even Gates could play either Guard or RT in a pinch. A 2nd or 3rd round OG could really give them options. But I don't want Slayer with any of Smith, Waddle, or Parsons still on the board, and I believe it's a near certainty one of them will be.

I don't seen them going OL in the 1st.

I think if either Smith or Pitts is still on the board at #11, that's the pick. Though I doubt either is.

If not, I've got a sneaking feeling it might be Kwity Paye. Talent meets need with explosive potential to be a game changer, while still having a high floor.

Parsons IS The Shiny Object... I think it's real Gold

It has Fields, Pitts, Horn and Parsons working out together in Los Angeles. Parsons is clearly the alpha of this very impressive group of athletes. I came out of watching one episode feeling even more certain that he has to be the guy if he is still there. I also was very impressed by Horn who was working out with Jalen Ramsey. Both guys would be great picks by the Giants at eleven.

Why would we be okay with not even the idea of competition at RT?

What did Peart do last year that suggests he should just be handed the job?
I think that if you are bringing in a top tier (really top 6) guy
Bill L : 4/15/2021 8:06 am : link
to be competition, then either you have all-pros at every spot (in which case something has gone incredibly wrong if you're picking at #11) or you have a lousy organizational philosophy (in which case you are consigned to pick at #11 forever).

Not to mention that wrt Slater it's moot since he can't even play his college position in the nfl.
Everyone knows Parsons can't cover

And can't shed blocks right?

The way some of you guys are talking about him you would swear he's Bobby Wagner.
