NFT: Nets benching everyone for tonight’s Sixers game

Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, Blake Griffin (and James Harden) are all OUT tonight against the 76ers, according to the Nets' injury report.

Kyrie Irving is not listed on the injury report and could play against the Sixers.

What an embarrassment for the league. If the stars don’t care about the regular season, why should I as a fan? The NFL gets so much shit for being greedy, but there is no bigger slap in the face than this in any major league. This was a marquee game I was actually looking forward to, I’ll watch baseball instead.

Why do NBA fans care
UConn4523 : 4/14/2021 7:22 pm : link
when people comment negatively on the league? You guys don’t really have much of a leg to stand on other than you like it and that’s 100% fine.

I think most people commenting were former NBA fans, I know I was and I’d love to be one day again. But not with this shit. These guys aren’t worth what they make and fans deserve a hell of a lot better this.

This is also a reflection of sports these days as a whole. The win a championship at all costs mentality actually isn’t all that enjoyable to be honest.

I agree it doesn't look good but context.

Yeah because they needed Durant to play 27 minutes last night against the freakin Timberwolves? The Nets would have won that game with you and I getting those minutes. It’s a bad look that they decide to sit him during a nationally televised game against the team they are competing with for the 1 seed. Tons of people have been looking forward to this game. You and the teams may not give a damn but I guarantee you that ESPN and YES do, and they help pay the bills along with the fans that are getting screwed.

The NBA values playoffs more, and with 20 teams and a full month of action, I get it.
It's only because seating doesn't matter any more
larryflower37 : 4/14/2021 7:26 pm : link
Top 3 teams in the east are leaps ahead of the rest.
Brooklyn is going to struggle in the playoffs.
New coach who has never coached in the playoffs.
They don't play defense and it will take a minute to get in sync when everyone is in the lineup.
Lakers are in trouble from a seeding perspective if they don't get healthy soon.
Would love to see them in a play-in situation.
Holy crap - I get it if you have a play-off spot locked up in the NFL
short lease : 4/14/2021 7:33 pm : link

before the season ends and you want to rest some starters to not risk injury.

But, this is basketball !! - why are the benching them anyway? From Russo's rant (lol) - it does not sound like they are hurt?

The playoffs don't start for another month.

Regardless, why are you having someone with a history of lower body injuries playing back to back? I get why KD is sitting tonight. Nets are title or bust. You want him playing when it matters most. Nets eventually probably need the Big 3 to play significant time in regular season to mesh before playoffs.

I'm with you on this. It isn't like soccer threads where people who never liked the sport chime in just to say the sport sucks. Most people who are disappointed in the NBA used to be fans, sometimes rabid fans. I'm to the point where I'd rather watch a middle of the road college game than the farce known as the NBA regular season.

Exactly. As a Nets fan, I'm happy they are being careful with their stars, especially KD.
This also wasn't supposed to be a back-to-back situation. I bet KD would have played both had the Minn game not been postponed a day.

Forget man. You’ll continue ball washing the NBA until the end of time. No sense trying to explain to you why people think the product has MAJOR issues anymore.

Just fucking cancel the regular season and let these clowns make $40 Million/per to have a tournament and crown a “champion”. After all, that’s all that matters.

Harden has been injured for 2 weeks and already came back too soon and got reinjured once.
KD only came back a few days ago from a hamstring in his return season from an achilles and was playing into the 4Q yesterday in a blowout vs. Minny.
LMA and Griffin got bought out by their old teams a few weeks ago. Nobody bought a ticket because they were excited to see them come off the bench vs. Philly.

Kyrie is Kyrie but the rest is just unfortunate luck.

And re: "load management" every team is doing it. Even teams not in the championship picture like Indy, Tor, and Cle. It is what it is this year with all the condensed scheduling.

The NBA? Yes. I hate the time management thing. I would love if the league did something about it, but-as it stands-teams are going to utilize it. I too long for the days of a Jordan playing 82 games, but it's a different era/league is doing nothing to penalize healthy guys sitting.

I remember watching MJ to the Max & him saying he gave 100% each game because there was someone in the stands who never saw him play live before & would never again. I miss that type of spirit.

100%. All the leagues can do better. The NBA seems to have a higher of % of fans threatening to quit all the time because times have changed.

It's definitely bizarre but as someone who was bummed the Nets swapped Dlo for him at the time I get why they do it because I can't believe how good he is when he plays. He is just a different guy. Almost like Ricky Williams.

That’s the point!!!!! I WANT to watch good basketball. I’ve been looking forward to tonight. Get to flip between the Knicks/Pelicans and Nets/Sixers. Now it’s the Knicks only. That’s what people on this thread keep trying to say. Most of us have been NBA fans for a long time. But it’s becoming harder and harder to give a damn. You seem kind of young so you probably have no idea where we are coming from. Or just want to call us old and “get off my lawn” types. I don’t care what you want to call us, honestly.
The NBA peak was from 1980 with the arrival of Bird and Magic
Chris684 : 4/14/2021 8:29 pm : link
to about 2000 which, no surprise was pretty much the end of Michael.

In that span you had:

Magic-Bird rivalry
Bad Boys Pistons
The greatest player of All-Time and Bulls Dynasties
The Dream Team
Stockton and Malone
Eastern Conference Bulls/Knicks/Heat/Pacers/Magic rivalries
Dominant Era for Bigs Dream/Shaq/Ewing/Zo/Robinson/Smith/Mutombo
Enforcers like Oakley, Davis Brothers, PJ Brown
NBA on NBC and it’s theme music

I could go on and on but really it’s so obvious. The biggest thing missing these days is toughness and competition. These players are all soft. They play soft and they shy away from competition. I’m willing to give LeBron credit because he does pretty much show up every night if not injured, but he is forever the poster boy of ring chasing in your prime rather than waiting until you’re washed up. I used to think Durant was a competitor but he’s a bigger clinger on than LeBron. And forget about the league’s politics which is so hypocritical it’s a joke.

That was peak NBA for me. Despite being a Bulls fan I was too young to really enjoy the title years save for the last couple. I was glued to the NBA from 98/99-2003 and was still a pretty big fan up until 2007/8ish. That initial 5 year stretch post Jordan Bulls opened up so many awesome rivalries and such a short amount of time.

A lot of my friend group tuned out because the quality of play went down and the league turned from a team-first approach to a me-first attitude.

We had Bird and Magic and Jordan, but it was also Showtime, the Pistons, the Celtics and the Bulls. For a large period in the 90's and 2000's, it wasn't about teams. It was about individuals.

When you market individuals, they need to be likable or something fans can get behind. Today, for every Stephon Curry, you have two Kyrie Irvings.
The NBA has a lot of problems ...
DonQuixote : 4/15/2021 8:12 am : link
... but the regular season is just not going to matter when you have so many regular season games and so many teams making the playoffs. It's an age-old debate, do you have fewer reg season games so they matter? Good luck with that. Fewer playoff teams? But with what you have you have to take the long haul with your players.

Sure there are prima donnas, but to say the NFL is better, I'm not so sure.

In baseball, decisions are being made all the time to hold pitchers back so they'll be healthy in October. It sucks...i'd like to see deGrom pitch every time I go to a game, but I can't.

That's fine. If you tuned out of the NBA, that's okay. I'm not going to declare a jihad on you or anything, Haha.

What does cracks me up is that whenever we have this thread, it's usually the same posters coming on to take shots @ the NBA...like Dave in Hoboken for example. As far as I know-I don't really check those threads-I don't think people go on baseball threads & bemoaning the game taking like 13 hours or so to be completed. I would rather watch paint dry than watch a baseball game, but I'm not going on Mets or Yankees threads & articulating that.
stop by a yankees thread
UConn4523 : 4/15/2021 8:19 am : link
you'll get a nice taste of what MLB threads are like.

Baseball I enjoy but its pretty unlikable right now. Manfred is an absolute joke, these rule changes have been mostly abysmal, and in the year 2021 they still don't market their players.

NBA has marketing down pat, and I actually like Silver a lot. He embraces change and stands by his players. The issue now is there's no incentive anymore, I don't even think a title either. These guys are making $40m+ per season, sitting out frequently, and basically dictating when they will play, where they will play, and who they will play with. Leonard to Golden State if they don't win this year? Give me a fucking break.
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/15/2021 8:22 am : link
UConn, I don't like the sitting either & think it's being abused to an absurd degree, but there's nothing I can do.

What pisses me off more is the Kyrie nonsense, where he's taking PTO every other game. If any of us pulled his stunts, we'd find ourselves unemployed.

I can't stand NBA players resting when healthy or the minutes police bullshit. But this is the wrong example to use.

Harden- for all his faults he tries to suit up every game and pretty much does it. It's one of the most respectable things about him.

Durant- after going through what he went through- how can you can blame him or his team for being extra cautious? Out of pretty much any athlete in any sport- he has every reason to be careful.

Griffin/ Aldridge- has anyone watched them recently? They aren't good players anymore. Who cares?

Crazy. Irregular Heartbeat.

Good player for a long time, I'd put him on the same tier as Chris Webber. Hall of Very Good.

It's a shame that we never saw the Oden/Aldridge/Roy Blazers get a chance to develop. They had a really good record when all of them played together. Sucks that all of their careers were cut short by health issues. Atleast Aldridge was able to play a long time.
This is the problem with long seasons in basketball.
Zeke's Alibi : 4/15/2021 11:36 am : link
3.5 games a week is nowhere near long enough for these guys to recover after 25. Not surprised now that these guys have some leverage, they are deciding to use it. I certainly would. You see all those old basketball players walking around with two knee replacements and it doesn't look fun.

UConn4523 : 4/15/2021 11:41 am : link
but I need to know more. An irregular heartbeat can mean a lot of things and generally doesn't prevent you from anything other than powerlifting (football for example). I don't see why an NBA player would retire from it (yes I don't know the full details) but he's 35 and I bet that has more to do with it. Sounds like he was going to retire soon anyway, IMO.
