Parsons - NFL Player Comparison and How he can fit

Allen in CNJ : 4/15/2021 10:41 am
Going to keep this brief. I've seen several NFL player comparisons of Micah Parsons, namely very good players like Donta Hightower and Myles Jack.

Like many of you I go back into the 80's with my fanhood and NFL-watching experience. One players keeps popping into my head in looking at Parsons, and that's Karl Mecklenburg who played for the Broncos in the 80' sand early 90's.

I'm pretty sure his official position was ILB at the time, with Rulon Jones and Simon Fletcher lining up at the OLB spots - KM lined up ALL OVER the field (just watch film from SB21!) and at times wreaked havoc on defenses. He had something like 80+ sacks in his career and was a very good player that was also schemed into the Broncos D.

Parsons is unquestionably more explosive and athletic, but the ROLE KM played in Denver's D is a lot like what I could see a defense, like the Giants, implementing Parsons in. As long as he is able to physically and mentally do this I think he'd be a great fit for our defense.

Thoughts?
there is no question that he would be a positive

addition to the team. There are supposedly significant character issues around him. I have even heard him compared to OBJ in terms of the complications he may create.

There is also some concern about how much he adds on third down as he hasn't been in coverage. To me that is less of a concern than the former issues if true.

What are they? People keeo spouting this shit off and they have zero information on what specifically is his character issue? What has he done to earn that rap?

I'm not buying it just because some guy posted it on the internet before.

I've been wondering the same thing. Is it drugs/alcohol? Reading between the lines it seems like he's just a me-first a-hole. If that's the case, and the Giants have been told that by Penn St coaches, then I understand why they might want to just rule him out.
I really want Parsons to be a NY Giant
Rjanyg : 4/15/2021 11:39 am : link
We all know that the NFL is a passing league. That said, the quick passing game is way more prevalent than the deep passing game with 5-7 step drops so pressure is usually schemed and manufactured as opposed to having a dominant Edge guy just running around the left tackle for the strip sack. It happens still just not as much and not on the NY Giants the past 4 seasons.

Enter Patrick Graham who understands this and schemes his defense to create pressure through blitzes. We have a very good D Line and a very deep secondary with loads of talent. Other than Blake Martinez we have no idea who the other 3 starting LB will be. We can speculate but we have 2 starters coming off season ending surgery in Ximines and Carter. We have 2 2nd year players in Brown and Coughlin who showed some ability but I wouldn't necessarily count on them to be dominant forces. Odenigbo is an interesting signing but is more of a 4-3 DE for obvious passing downs. Ryan Anderson is a guy I like as is Reggie Ragland and I can see both of them being favorites for 2 of the 3 openings.

But I think Parsons could be that guy who is the missing speed defender our front 7 lacks. He can line up anywhere and do anything a LB needs to do and do it with some anger and ferocity.

I wasn't too familiar with it but I posted this before

Could be bullshit, but who knows. I'd imagine our staff is aware considering our connections to PSU. However, if this is true I don't want anything to do with him. Guys like this fuck up locker rooms. If it's not, all aboard. He has some negatives, but he's a perfect fit for our defense and what we need.

There was some hazing incident when he was younger. I think there is potential concern after the Giants have had maturity issues with Flowers, Apple and more recently Baker. I personally think NYG has done their homework on Parsons and with Coach Chaos having been the person that recruited Parsons to PSU, he would be the source of confidence they would need if they were to draft him.
He is much more athletic than Mecklenburg
The Mike : 4/15/2021 11:58 am : link
The comps of Devin White and Bobby Wagner are better.

On the character issues, the Giants coaching staff is absolutely plugged into this player in every possible way. So they have no doubt adjudicated this issue long ago and either have Parsons at the top of their board or off the board completely.

I would remind people about the "character issue" that precluded the Giants from taking Laremy Tunsil in 2016 opting instead for Eli Apple. A precise misreading of character on both sides that could not have been a greater drafting mistake.

Parsons is a natural alpha leader and extremely competitive which I think is what the Giants have been missing on defense since the Strahan/LT/Carson eras. I would encourage folks to watch the "Hey Rookie" series on ESPN which has Parsons, Fields, Pitts and Horn working out together in advance of the draft. Parsons is clearly the alpha of the group and comes across as a talented and confident extrovert who appears to get along well with the other players.
He is probably the best football
joeinpa : 4/15/2021 12:13 pm : link
Player in this draft. He is 245, can run, and might be the most effective edge rusher in the draft if he were to line up there, according to a few of the Podcasts I ve listened to.

I understand the appeal of Smith or Slater, but if Parsons is there, I ll be disappointed if the Giants pass, but I don’t expect he will be there.
I remember Mecklenburg. Heckuva player
Heisenberg : 4/15/2021 12:21 pm : link
Tough SOB. But he sure didn't run a 4.39. Parsons is another level athletically.

White, Wagner, Jack are all better comps for Parsons.

I feel like if his head is on straight, he's gonna be a real beast in the league. I don't buy him being somehow redundant with Martinez. A creative D Coord like Graham can find all kinds of ways to use that speed, strength and ability. He fills a need so if he's available and they don't take him, I'd guess it's because of the character concerns and I'll trust the FO's judgement. They have the inside line on him, after all. There's no team in a better position to scrutinize Parsons than the Giants. If they pick him or not, you have to assume they've done their homework and have a good reason to.

Exactly my question and I was lectured by Milton for daring to ask that question. I have always maintained that if it was just be a jerk to younger players, whatever people can be assholes in college and star athletes generally get their ass kissed.

However if he is a cancerous personality, Im not sure this team has the established leadership yet to reign that behavior in. But even if we did, Judge doesnt want that kind of disruption in the lockerroom.

But there should be more to this story available for public consumption in my opinion. I can't be more thankful for having Coach Chaos on our staff because nobody is going to have more insight into the player.
Aldon Smith and Rolando McClain are also good comparisons

Smith went #7 overall and McClain went #8 overall, so hopefully Parsons also goes in the top 10!

Parsons' personal coach and mentor? The thing that worries me is, as a rookie, 1st or 2nd year guy, you can have older vets reign him in, keep him focused and such. But what happens in 5 years when he's one of the locker room leaders? Who would have the gravitas to keep him in line then? Who is he going to look up to? LT is the only person I can think of. Probably there are other older ex-players or coaches, I just don't know.
LT could be like...
D HOS : 4/15/2021 1:15 pm : link
Blow? Fine. Hookers? All good. Throw your junk in a meeker player's face? Push him down and dog hump him? Nah man don't do that.
JPP was probably the last front 7 guy who had to be accounted for.
Ivan15 : 4/15/2021 1:20 pm : link
Maybe Tuck before him. Williams may become that guy this year but it sure would be nice if Parsons is the pick and works out that way.

If the Giants pass on Parsons, we will all know why since there likely won’t be another real impact defender available where they are picking.
Parsons reminds me a bit of
PwndPapi : 4/15/2021 1:21 pm : link
Cornelius Bennett. Legit 4.5 side-to-sideline backer who can blow up runs in the backfield and cover backs. Not a true EDGE but can contribute 6-8 sacks a season. Creates turnovers. A little bit of everything guy who you move around the field.

Really like him. I do wonder about the character flags.
I keep saying it ..
bLiTz 2k : 4/15/2021 1:22 pm : link
I don't know where these comps are coming from...

He can't cover..at least he hasn't done it well yet.

He gets stood up easy in the run game, has problems disengaging and is not a disrupter when blockers get their hands on him.

His redeeming qualities stem from short range speed, and making highlight reel plays when quickly diagnosing and shooting gaps. He's also pretty good in the pass rush.

So in short, I think he has no real plus skillet for 3rd down. He's good in many areas, but not elite. Everyone is probably a bit linebacker starved and are projecting things that aren't there.

If you are going to drop him into coverage he ain't Myles Jack.
He's also not Bobby Wagner in the run game.
He's also not a true edge like Bosa as a pass rusher.

He's a huge pass...go out and draft an edge player who can change the game. This guy ain't it.
Parsons is a guy
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 4/15/2021 1:23 pm : link
I've been going back and forth on throughout this pre-draft process.

"Struggles to take on and shed blockers". This is a common criticism of Parsons and something that's fairly easy to see when watching him. This is a pretty major question mark for a LB. It's the main reason why I'm a little scared of drafting him at this point.

However, I do think there could be good synergy between Parsons and the Giants' style of DL play. I think the Giants DL protects their LBers and gives them space to make plays, which is exactly what Parsons thrives at.

There isnt a guy in this draft without questions, but I'd rather take a productive pass rusher than a tweener who is not guaranteed to have a role on 3rd down. This is like Isaiah simmons all over again.
As A Only A Fan
Trainmaster : 4/15/2021 1:44 pm : link
who knows what the real issue is with Parsons' "character".

Clearly, it could be a major issue, leading to a "hard pass" or "taken off draft board".

Or it could be a "maturity" or "isolated event" issue that could be overlooked or fixed.

Based on Judge's apparent high attention to detail, coupled with staff members with first hand experience with Parsons, I'd just sit back and see what happens.

If Parsons is available at #11 and the Giants pass on him, either a better player was available in their opinion or the character issue was real.

Based on his measureables, Parsons is a potential playmaker that the Giants have desperately needed at the LB position. Parsons would seem to be a better fit than Isiah Simmons was in the 2020 draft.

Given there should be excellent WR and OL options in rounds 2 or 3, I'd have no problem if Parsons (or Surtain) were the pick.

Say you. You haven't got a clue how he would be deployed here. None of us have studied any film extensively (if at all). None of us have coached Ds.

Member the time a UG EDGE went just before we picked and we instead got stuck with a boy and his mother? Many thought he was played too upright and lacked sand in his pants. Many celebrated CHI saving Reese/Ross from themselves. He's a double-digit sack guy now; a completely new and revamped front office and coaching staff chased him this past offseason before he elected to resign in LA.

Point is, none of these guys are finished products and likely won't be for several seasons worth of experience and several offseason in the weight room. Every prospect in the draft has shortcomings they will need to resolve at the next level to reach full potential.

Repeating what draft guides are saying about a player now has little to do with how that player performs in one situation vs. another or how they've grown 3 years from now.
I also feel Parson would be a great addition
George from PA : 4/15/2021 2:04 pm : link

you spend so much effort to change the culture is that every once in a while you can absorb a questionable character guy if he's an elite talent and the locker room can withstand him . So is this the talent who is worth taking a chance on?

I guess Boylhart must not have liked Parsons, since that's Milton's sole source.

we're letting Peppers walk next season. Different positions but there's overlap in the snaps and a lot of overlap in terms of resource allocation with other big money/draft investments in the middle of the back 7 defense. It would be hard to pay and play 3 safeties with a big money MLB and a premium draft pick offball linebacker. Just something to keep in mind with his selection. Love what he does on the field but there's some collateral damage there and Peppers is the type of player that we claim to want to build around (multiple, hard worker, loves football, etc).

The guys walking will probably be Engram, Shepard, and Solder. I think they'll try to resign Peppers and they'll start talking to Barkley depending on how the year goes. (Though they should let Barkley walk - but that's another topic)

I’ve heard about “character concerns” but this is the first detailed account of what that may be I’ve read.

On top of other psychotic activity by Parsons mentioned, this is buried at the end of the article

Quote:
He alleges in the complaint that Barber, Parsons, Gross-Matos and [] did the following to him and certain other players:

* Took their clothes and did not return them.
* Told them they intended to make them “their bitch because this is a prison.”
* Wrestled them down and simulating a humping action while on top of them.
* Placed their penis in their faces while simulating ejaculation.
* Placed their penis on and in their buttocks.

Humphries claims he was referred to as “this is Jerry” in reference to former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky who was convicted of child sex abuse.

Barber, a Harrisburg resident who transferred to Austin Peay earlier this year, has in court documents likened what happened to Humphries as locker room horseplay.

Jesus, if this is true...Parsons was on academic probation for most of 2018 due to the “hazing.” What does this mean about the investigation that led to this determination?

Gross-Matos was drafted in 2nd round last year by Panthers. Surely they knew about this, and if so, what does that mean?

The additions seem to mean linebacking is no longer a potential weakness, but maybe even a source of strength.
Micah is repeatedly cited as a player with great measurables and suspect instincts. And before there's any more public gushing over his measurables let's remember that Lorenzo Carter is taller at 6 6, weighs more than 250 and ran the 40 in 4.5. At the same time the readily discounted Darius Slayton is 6-1 and one of the fastest men in the league with 4.39 speed. It takes measurables plus instincts
While unclear on the exact details I believe a knife was pulled in that innocent sounding hazing incident and that the threatened student has a lawsuit pending against the institution. I also believe that there were previous instances going back to high school. Against that, stands Lavar Arlington's welcomed input, that this is a good kid.
That doesn't mean he shouldn't be drafted and won't be a great Pro, frankly I don't know, I read stuff here and stuff there, latch on to some things, but always recognize the depths of my ignorance. The full-time professionals with unlimited resources and databases get an awful lot wrong. I try to leave the mistakes to them and and always find a way to say, "see, I told you so, I knew it all along".

So of those 40 sacs last year, only 12 sacs came from linebackers. And only 6 sacs of came from linebackers still on the roster.

So for a team that runs a 3-4 Defense, Linebacking still may be a weakness...

I look at it like this. Either we have someone in JJ and he can manage a personality like this or we don't and we are fucked anyway.

I'd be thrilled to hear Parsons name called. IMO could be a guy who gets 10 sacks, shoots run gaps, disguises coverages / messes up slot routes, blankets RBs in coverage.

Smith is also very intriguing but I'd rather concerns that JJ might not be able to channel him the right way than concerns about having an NFL body...

Article is a must read.

If this is the case, this is a whole different story.

Looks like PSU has really cleaned up their act. God that program cant lose enough

Fun to see Milton go from repeatedly propping up character guys like Robinson and Rosen, ad nauseum, to now being anti-Parsons and using character flaws as the basis of his comparison. I guess Boylhart must not have liked Parsons, since that's Milton's sole source.
Boylhart gave Parsons the same grade he gave Robinson and Rosen and had this to say about him...
Quote:
Micah has the size, bulk, and athletic talent that every team in this draft should be excited about to add to their defense. He has an excellent burst to the ball and when he is sure of his assignment and reacts with confidence, he looks like a formula one race car with turbo power streaking to the play to make the tackle. Micah has the speed to go sideline to sideline and make plays. He has the speed to run down players from behind and when used to attack the line of scrimmage, Micah has the burst and explosion off the line, to make offensive tackles wear “depends” as standard underwear attire.
His pro comparison was Brian Bosworth...
Quote:
The way Micah plays on the field and the way he is used by Penn State, reminds me, very much, of former Oklahoma LB Brian Bosworth. When Micah attacks the line of scrimmage the front four defensive lineman block like offensive lineman, opening holes for Micah to have a direct line into the backfield and make a play behind the line of scrimmage, just like Oklahoma did for Bosworth.

p.s.--The guy I'm propping up this year is Kyle Pitts. He is the one guy worth trading up for and if the Giants gave up next year's #1 to do it, I wouldn't be upset. Pitts has both the highest floor and highest ceiling of any prospect in this year's draft.

you spend so much effort to change the culture is that every once in a while you can absorb a questionable character guy if he's an elite talent and the locker room can withstand him . So is this the talent who is worth taking a chance on?
Absofuckinglutely not!
