If we draft Waddle or Toney

adamg : 4/15/2021 5:28 pm
Do we trade Shep? Both of those prospects project to work from the slot.

Shep did play outside more often than not since Tate was signed. Tate took over the slot role. But it seems like Shep does his best work inside and it'd be a waste to try to make him an outside guy when he's best off in the middle.

That said, we still don't have great depth at WR. Does it make sense to draft a Waddle or Toney and then look to move Shep next year, after the rooks get their feet wet and we address outside receiver early in next year's draft?

Thoughts?
Didn’t I read that Shepard scored higher on the outside than from the

Slot?

Maybe that isn’t saying much, however. It is safer on the outside.
I'm not sure there would be much of a market for Shepard

Not because of his talent, per se - though I think he's good but not especially special - but because of his health, specifically the concussion history.

The only way there's a solid trade market for SS is if he plays 2021 entirely healthy, and if he does manage to pull that off, a large chunk of the fanbase will lose their mind for trading SS once he finally proved he could stay healthy.

Such is the challenge of navigating the POV of WFAN callers.
Shepard is a slot
LeonBright45 : 4/15/2021 6:04 pm : link
He is only adequate or serviceable on the outside. He is familiar with the offense. He is only 28 but has a had several concussions and could retire at any time should he get another. I think that he is worth more to us than most other teams at this point. I don't know that we'd get a whole lot in return.
They’d save $9 million

Against the cap if they traded or released him.
Depends on the return

I think if we can get a third or better, that would be tough to turn down. I would trade him. If not, we keep him and leverage his experience in the offense to get off to a quick start.

Let’s worry about this season first.

Instead of upgrading X/Y WR we should be targeting the slot. If we do not nab Waddle at 11 then it would be great if we could target Rogers from Clemson or small school standout D'Wayne Eskridge. That way we have our new slot on the roster if Shep decides to retire or walk at end of season.

A third or better?

I think maybe readjust your sights. A pick or not is more like it. No chance that Shepard gets a day 2 pick back. He turned 28 (so he's not old, but probably is as good as he'll get), has a contract that, while not at all an albatross, isn't a crazy bargain either (and contains $4.1M in guarantees this season), and he has a significant concussion history.

Shepard is definitely worth more to this team than he is on the open market - I think there's a very reliable role for him in this offense, but I also think there would be absolutely zero trade market for him.
I don’t believe anyone would trade
Simms11 : 4/15/2021 7:02 pm : link
for Shep. Certainly not with the receivers available in this class. There’s going to be quite a few that are at least as good if not better then Shep and so why would anyone use draft capital to draft him and then have to pay him!

+1
Average WR

High salary

Can't stay healthy... yet Giants' fans think there's actually a market for Shepard.
Or if we draft one or the other

We’d still be too shallow. Maybe if we drafted both.

Actually keep players instead of wanting to trade them off so fast. Rookies don’t acclimate that quickly and getting rid of valuable veterans is just one of the many reasons we’re in the toilet as an organization now.
Shep will miss

6 games anyway. Always does
we have to make sure

whoever we draft actually steps in and plays well...I love Shep's energy on the field/lockeroom but I cringe everytime he takes a hit...just one more concussion and I think he's in danger of career being over....I would move on from him after this year, just to make sure we have a good slot player while the potential rook get settled in...which is hopefully Waddle haha
