Covid-19 and NFL

PhilD : 4/15/2021 6:30 pm
Almost all states are giving vaccinations to people over 16.
It seems to me that players should be signing up to get vaccinated. They are not jumping the line. They should be trying hard to get an appointment like the rest of us. Unless they want an excuse not to go to work.
Vaccinated/covid and doing what the NFLPA

Under the pretence of covid....Are seperate issues
Throw in the fact that most major colleges had a full slate of spring

practices and spring games (some with fans) and you realize this is pure bull shit. The union is flexing its muscle and the players as usual are caught in the middle. There’s absolutely no excuse for these guys to all not be fully vaccinated by the end of April. But ... On the other hand, the owners were fools for letting these workouts be contractually termed voluntary. Hopefully this fix this in the next go around.
Do we need a vaccine thread

Do you realize how dumb this sounds?

The players ARE the union.

Really ... I didn’t know that ... seriously, read between the lines. Union leadership is comprised of player reps, elected non playing officials and their attorneys. They have their own agenda which is often in conflict with what is best for the majority of players. I could go on but hopefully you’ll figure it out for yourself.
I thought the players get to vote on this

and have the ability to overturn "the Union's" agenda if they disagree with it. I must be wrong about that

You're not wrong.
GD ... I didn’t make my point very well last night but Florio posted

this article about 4 hours later ... He explains what I wanted to say in summary. There’s also a great quote from an unnamed coach ... “I’ll never understand why anyone thinks doing less will get you more”. Have a blessed day y’all.

You're blaming the players for something the owners did.
Gatorade Dunk : 4/16/2021 12:57 pm : link
The reduced practices were a negotiated element in each of the two most recent CBAs. The players used practice time as a bargaining chip to ask for a larger share of league revenue to go toward the salary cap. The owners opted to hold their ground on revenue and ceded on practice time.

The compromise was making many of the workouts "voluntary" (using air quotes there), but there's obviously immense pressure on the players to participate in those workouts - look at the hot water Coughlin got himself into in Jacksonville. I guarantee that the players would have been perfectly happy to practice more frequently if it came with more money, the proof of which is that so many players happily accept workout bonuses in their contract, which gives them an incentive to ignore the word "voluntary" for much of the offseason program.

While it's true that the players are the ones who are actively avoiding the offseason program right now, it's also worth noting that the owners had a chance to make these workouts mandatory and chose not to do so in order to keep more of the revenue for themselves.
I’m not blaming the players ...

There are 3 entities here ... the owners, the rank and file players and the union leadership, and each have their own agendas. I believe most players would prefer to have these spring activities in person and on the field. They realize the benefit; but they’re caught between the recommendation from the union leadership and the need for team unity. I bet if an individual team voted 51 / 49 to stay remote ... they’d say it was a team decision to stay out. Listen, I’m a 30 year in mgmt guy for a company that never had a union because we didn’t need one. All of our people were treated fairly and with respect. I’m also not afraid to say I’m happily biased in my opinion.
