I know there's a Ranger's thread, and I also know that hockey is a distant fourth in popularity to football, baseball and basketball but...
Is Artemi Panarin the best New York athlete in any sport at this point?
Lindor, deGrom, Cole, Randel, Judge, Barkley, maybe? I'd give deGrom as the best competition..
This guy is just a pleasure to watch, he's on a different level than anyone on the Rangers and usually anyone on the ice. 135 points in his first 100 games as a Ranger, more than even the Captain.
Talk about money well spent...
To my eyes he's a combination or Rick Middleton and Mike Bossy. He sees the ice and avoids contact like Middleton and he snipes with accuracy that is Bossy like.
I agree he's on the short list for best player in NY right now.
Panarin never made the list yet (he did win Calder and is an all-star, but his best Hart finish was 3rd and never was 1st in any category).
Panarin is phenomenal (Cole too), but to be in the deGrom conversation you need to reach that pinnacle and stay there a while.
Plus deGrom is homegrown and that gives him another advantage IMO.
FWIW, I'm a huge Met's fan and love Jake...
BTW, someone said he's not the best hockey player in NY? Who am I missing? Matthew Barzal? Adam Fox?
No? Who's that?
Yes he is
If we are talking about RIGHT NOW, Durant isn’t anywhere on the list. How many games has he played the past two seasons?

He's going to say Barzal, and then I will laugh and laugh.
Islanders have the better team at the moment, but claiming Panarin isnt the best player is absurd.

Seconded!

I'd say it's more about perception. When people think of New York, they think of New York City. Broadway, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building...all that good shit.

Yeah, that's a no from me dog. If you have a New York-related team name, you're a NY team.

So the Bills and Sabres are New York teams? All I'm saying is that I put the Islanders and Nets into that category. Yeah, they're in New York, but they don't conjure up images of New York.

Of course they're NY teams. NY is bigger than just the five boroughs and LI. But whatever. Be weird.

They're literally New York teams, but they're not perceived as New York teams. Hell, I do

Again, perception. Mets embrace the New York image. The Nets portray Brooklyn as distinct from New York City (i.e. Manhattan)
That lack of irony in this statement is amusing.
Dont be stupid.
Dont be stupid.
It's simple. Let me explain it like you're a child. The Mets are more New York than the Nets. The Nets are more New York than the Islanders. The Giants are more NY than the Jets. New York Red Bulls are more New York than the Sabres even though they play in New Jersey and the Sabres play in New York. The Jets are more NY than the Bills despite playing their home games in another state. NYCFC is more New York than the Buffalo Bills because they play soccer in a baseball stadium in the Bronx. And the Sabres are more NY than the Nets, but not really because they both reside in gentrified shitholes. Get with the program. This is New York!
Watching 'the breadman' create on the ice with Patrick Kane was such a pleasure.
Naturally, days after I purchased a Black Hawk Panarin shirt he was traded.
Yes I am bitter

one of the worst trades ever.
Just a horrible trade. Firable - Panarin for Saad? Panarin was already a 70+ point player at the time of the trade. Saad never sniffed that and wasn't some defensive whiz. Usually after a trade like this you find out the guy slept with another players wife or something (I am making no such claim - but that's how bad this trade was).
I used to think the Caps trading Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat was worse and that's still terrible, but not worse.
