Micah Parsons role with Graham's defense

Jim in Forest Hills : 4/16/2021 9:32 am
Whose job is he taking? Will it be a new role?

We know Blake is the MIKE, he's there 3 downs.

Where is Parsons fit and does he play in nickel and dime?

Is there a comp player on another defense?

I love the player, help me understand the fit.
The good thing about Parsons
Simms11 : 4/16/2021 9:38 am : link
is he can play at any of the LBer positions and be extremely effective in this D. Graham likes multiple looks and so I’d expect him to be moved around. I’m sure he’ll be an Edge on passing downs and most likely inside on 1st and 2nd downs for most part.
His role
Dankbeerman : 4/16/2021 9:39 am : link
is not defined. Much the way they molded a role for Peppers they would for Parsons.

At face value, Parsons would be taking
Angel Eyes : 4/16/2021 9:40 am : link
Tae Crowder’s job as the inside linebacker next to Martinez. He’d likely compete for Carter Coughlin’s outside linebacker spot as well, depending on his instincts since Coughlin was used as a “Spy” in Graham’s defense.
Parsons
Mike in NY : 4/16/2021 9:41 am : link
His role would be similar to what Tae Crowder was late in the year. The problem is I think he is a good blitzer for a LB and not necessarily a good EDGE pass rusher. I know people make too much of arm length, but few short armed EDGE guys have actually had success. If Parsons was in that role I think he would be too easily neutralized by OT's who could prevent Parsons from getting into OT's body.

DeAndre Baker and Odell I do not see the Giants drafting Parsons
I see him as an OLB.....like LT old role
George from PA : 4/16/2021 9:49 am : link
Replacing or rotating with Carter or X-Men...he will terrorize....no QB will extend time to throw....and RB will not be able to turn corner

I suspect Trae Crowder and Reggie Ragland play next to Blake
Thank goodness...no more Mayo and Downs.
I am thinking stacking Parsons and Williams
Chip : 4/16/2021 9:51 am : link
like LT and Marshall. Dynamic Duos and holding Parsons mistakes as a 17 18 year old against him is wrong. Joe Judge was at his pro day I will trust his take on him if we do take him.

I disagree. We will be doing extensive homework on Parsons character and I suspect a little hazing is all that will be uncovered. Hazing doesn't equate to robbing people while gambling at gunpoint. Beckham had no concerns that I can think of. He simply got mega famous and got sucked into that world. LBer isn't a sexy position - name the most famous LB currently playing - are they off the field superstars?

I'd love what Parsons brings to the table if the background checks out.
this is a good Parsons

interview...he seemed to handle the character question (from Ryan Dunleavy of course...) pretty well

He might be a Odell....Do not see Baker
George from PA : 4/16/2021 9:56 am : link
He works hard...he dominates...very strong...very fast.

He does have a "look at me" ....not sure how bad....Coach Spencer will know if he fits or not.

We(fans) over think the character issues....the Giants know Parsons.

So it is or is not.
..we can only guess

What was Gettleman thinking when it came to Baker? Even before the robbery charges I remember hearing talk that he was lazy, missing out on team meetings and stuff like that.
As others have said
Semipro Lineman : 4/16/2021 10:04 am : link
I think he can play switch between inside or outside linebacker depending on the assignment. One of the draftniks said described him as follows; they felt he can contribute as an inside linebacker right away and eventually become an outside edge rushing linebacker threat on passing downs.

If you feel that he can develop into a solid/good edge rusher then the value is there at 11 based in his immediate inside linebacker production which includes his solid blitzing skills.
He is faster then Odell 😁

Yeah, I feel like he's a day one plug in at inside LB
Heisenberg : 4/16/2021 10:13 am : link
and has the athletic ability to do a lot more. But he can be a sideline to sideline guy day one. Having him running around behind LW and Dex is pretty exciting to me.

He's not a skilled pass rusher, but he has the athletic ability to be a good one if he learns. Considering Graham likes to bring guys on blitzes, he can probably do that day one too.
He can be an everydown Front 7 defender
Rjanyg : 4/16/2021 10:14 am : link
He can cover, scrap and fill, chase, blitz on run and pass, set an edge and pass rush from the outside.

He was recruited to PSU as a pass rusher from the edge. Also played RB in high school. Has only been off ball LB while at PSU and moved there out of need.

I see him as both ILB and OLB. The Giants will have to pick the best 4 to start. Martinez is the only guy with a starting spot right now. We currently have about 9 other guys to figure out who starts beside Blake and who would play both OLB spots. Add Parsons as a starter and you have 8 guys for 2 spots and the rest are depth.

keep in mind we are going into year 4 of the 3-4 defense. We still don't have the game changing LB's to run it effectively. Parsons would take us to the next level IMO.
A playmaker
Carl in CT : 4/16/2021 10:14 am : link
Leave it up to the coach where he lines and what his job is. Do you see D. White? Inside, outside, side to side. That’s what you would be getting. He also could line up at edge. OL, WR and edge (Parsons) just has to be the first three picks (unless by 5% chance Pitts falls).
I dont think his
Dankbeerman : 4/16/2021 10:16 am : link
concerns are an issue right now but if you really think he has the goods you have to wonder how he will handle the spotlight and sucess in this market. It ruined Odel. If he doesnt have the strongest mental make up it may fall apart in 3 years.

Or worse in 4 years after he signed a massive extension.

DeAndre Baker was viewed as the best CB in the draft and I could add a bunch of links that had positive things to say about his character.in hindsight, he was a huge mistake but at the time it looked like a good pick.

would stop pretending like his only issues are character concerns. The character concerns are pretty clear, but even beyond that it's the fact that he struggles with taking on blockers that scares me.

He needs space to operate. Luckily, the Giants have a big space eating DL to protect him. He attacks holes like a beast and is a natural playmaker. I could see it work.

Parsons is a virtual Von Miller clone in terms of his build and speed. His arm length is two inches shorter which, to your point, is why he is typically positioned inside. But he can play the role of setting the edge with his speed through positioning and scheme to avoid the problem you are describing.
If Parsons

Parsons is far and away my favorite player in the draft, and I will be thrilled if he is a Giant.

He can play inside linebacker and rush the edge.

With McKinney back, the Giants have 3 safeties that will be on the field a lot. I won’t be surprised if the primary group is Williams, Lawrence, Hill, Parsons, Martinez, Peppers, Ryan, McKinney, Bradberry, Jackson, Holmes.

He can slide outside on passing downs and they can play games with he and LW.

Exit vs Echo (our Cgap/Bgap calls for the DE). He will get free.

yeah, if true, that would be the proverbial "run to the podium" situation, assuming the Giants are confident his "character concerns" are behind him.

Then hopefully a WR and OG will be BPA in rds 2 and 3 and we'd have the best roster we've had in years! (and the best coaching staff in yrs to coach 'em)

I think the later has already been answered - our Dline should allow Blake + whoever to take advantage of holes. Parsons can be our answer to over drafting an EDGE while also learning over time to be a more complete player.

Add in that I think Judge has a pretty good handle on character and I wouldn't be concerned at all on that front if he's endorsing the pick.
Judge was front in center
ryanmkeane : 4/16/2021 11:25 am : link
during all of Parsons' drills at the pro day
He's a hell of a pass rusher
90.Cal : 4/16/2021 12:09 pm : link
He'd be dominant on 1st and 2nd down and Id say he's not like an elite edge guy but he could be better at rushing the passer than anyone else we currently got on our roster not named Leonard Williams. He probably plays next to Blake and eventually takes over. I just really want one of my top 5 or 6 guys on offense. So if they take him over Smith or Slater for example id pissed at the moment but id get over it. I like my top 3 corners (Farley, Surtain and Horn) and I like my top 3 Edge guys (Azeez, Phillips and Paye) but Micah might be the most talented on defense. Not too concerned about his character. I guess I dont mind my middle linebacker being a son of a bitch. Lol
I'm not an expert
giants#1 : 4/16/2021 12:12 pm : link
but Parsons sounds like a Fackrell replacement for the BUCK role. Move him around and create mismatches.
I could see the double A gap blitz being devastating
WillieYoung : 4/16/2021 12:43 pm : link
I don't pretend to be able to evaluate college players but a lot of people who do pretend have this guy rated as a top 5 or 6 talent. I'll be delighted if we take him.
I dont expect Parsons to be the pick.
CV36 : 4/16/2021 12:51 pm : link
If he is the pick It would be exciting to watch him and Peppers moving around confusing offenses. Has the potential to be a nightmare. The offense would have to account for them both. They can blitz, tackle and cover. Could be a lot of fun to watch.

Correct. Not a big dude by any means.

Here are Parsons measurables:

Height: 6’3″ (87th percentile) Weight: 246 (82nd)
40-Yard Dash: 4.39 seconds (99th)
Bench Press: 19 reps (33rd)
Vertical Jump: 34 inches (47th)
Broad Jump: 126 inches (93rd)
3-Cone Drill: 6.94 seconds (79th)
20-Yard Shuttle: 4.40 seconds (25th)

Arm length is 31 1/2"

The vast majority of LBer prospects need work in that area. And in Parson's case youre really overstating it. I think its nitpicking tbh. Also dont think the character concerns are "pretty clear". Other than the hazing, what has been said about him? Maybe theres more but there has literally been nothing specific or concrete.

I think hes going to be one of the best 2 or 3 best players in this draft. He's my preference but I think its going to be a moot point. Id be surprised if he makes it to 11. I think he's going to Detroit or Denver, maybe even as high as Atlanta.
