Austin Idol...I mean Bobby Skinner, IOL Draft Preview.

Klaatu : 4/16/2021 10:22 am
He and Justin begin with their take on the voluntary workout situation (and a few other things), but then they do a deep dive into the Guard and Center prospects.

Enjoy.

Klaatu - I have to re-read Sy56 reviews on this group

as they seemed much different than what these guys came up with after the first rounders are gone. Am I missing that?

Nevertheless, NYG should be shopping early and often again on the OL in my view. This obviously conflicts with also wanting to grab an impact receiving target and edge player so something has to give (edge gives).

Putting aside obvious comment that you pick players not positions, I am leaning towards something like this for the first four picks (not necessarily in order)...

WR, OL, OL, RB...

You have to get into Judge's

head to know what he really thinks about the young guys on the OL. I don't think we'll have that insight until we see who he drafts.

Bill, yes, we shall see what the lay of the land is @ 'Jints Central'. It was startling and unexpected to see Judge insert himself into the OL coaching equation early on last year winding up in firing of Colombo. So, he has ideas and a take: how much of those will be on display after Day 3?

Klaatu, love you man, and Skinner has a lot to offer, not all of which I agree with, but one hour 26 minutes, I can't, I just can't.

Boil it down for us? (:
Jimmy, I didn't post this to compare-and-contrast with Sy'56...
Klaatu : 4/16/2021 4:27 pm : link
But Skinner is considered by many here to be the "O-Line Guy," so chalk it up to serendipity that he made this video shortly after Sy'56 posted his own IOL draft preview. Note: OT preview is up next for both of them.

Off the top of my head, the biggest difference between the two that I can recall is that Skinner was a lot higher on Josh Myers (as a Center) and a lot lower on Wyatt Davis (as a Guard) that Sy was. I think, generally, they were in agreement on most of the other guys.
Klaatu - I have watched Skinner before and like his film reviews too.

Was just speeding thru the video though and didn't know if the differing opinions, like on Davis, was more prevalent. From your comment, sounds like no.

Nevertheless, a concerning factor to me from Sy's stuff was how few Day 1 starters he sees in the interior OL guys. I really was hoping the Giants could wait until Day 2 to grab an immediate starter(s) for the OL but that might not be the case.

Day 2 of the Draft that is.

Is it really different from any other year, though? You have a couple or three guys projected as day one starters, and the rest...who knows? Sy gave Will Hernandez a grade of 75, yet he started from day one and in his first year did very well, made PFWA's All-Rookie Team. Last year, Sy gave Matt Hennesey a slightly higher grade than Lloyd Cushenberry (80 to 77), and indeed Hennesey was drafted before Cushenberry (both in the 3rd), yet Cushenberry was the guy who started from day one and made the PFWA All-Rookie Team. This is not to bash Sy, just to point out how much of a crapshoot the draft is, and not to get too caught up in any pundit's evaluations.
Maybe so. Would like to think there are more than 3-4 natural rookie
Jimmy Googs : 4/16/2021 5:54 pm : link
starters at Guard and Center in the whole draft. I guess I should think about that more when a guy should start versus has to start because of team weaknesses.

There may be, but the odds are they're still not getting drafted in the 1st Round, right or wrong.

Yup. I don't think the Giants envisioned Lemieux and Peart as starters when they drafted them, but they were pressed into service for a variety of reasons. How the team feels about them going forward remains to be seen.

There are OT guys who can be shifted inside.
J and J

good point.
what's interesting to me, from BBI dynamic perspective,
ColHowPepper : 4/16/2021 6:58 pm : link
is that guys who are relatively down on DJ, certainly bw in dc and I think I put Jimmy in that camp, along with some others, seem to be motivated at a priority level to ensure the team does not field a 29-31 ranked OL again.

Seems there is a range of positions on this:

1/DJ supporters in first instance: find out if he's worthy of keeping as a franchise QB and/or those who are big supporters of the player

2/those who are sick of an incompetent OL that holds back the offense irrespective of who is under center...may be some overlap with #1

3/OL is not season determinative, we have enough/we have spent enough on OL assets the past two years, focus on the so-called BPA.

Seems to be a dynamic that morphs and waxes and wanes, even within individual posters. I'm torn.
With all due respect
Jimmy Googs : 4/16/2021 7:11 pm : link
anybody who thinks 3 is a moron. It may be the single biggest reason for this teams fall from grace since 2012.

And relative to me, I am clearly in both 1 and 2. If you care to know...

Yep and in Sy '56s latest on OTs he points out several OTs that may do just as well if not better inside.
