2020 defense snap counts

Mike in Morris : 4/16/2021 11:05 am
I was curious and looked up the numbers

Top 5
Martinez was on the field for 1063 downs, 97.43%
Ryan 1051 96.33%
Bradberry 1021 93.58%
Peppers 911 83.5%
L. Williams 803 73.6%

D.line was LW @ 803, D.T. @658, D.Law @ 655, BJ Hill @ 376, Sheard @ 260, Johnson @ 231 and Laos @ 72

L.B.s = BM @ 1063, Frackrell@608, Crowder @405, Carter @ 234, Downs @ 232 Mayo @ 193, Coughlin @ 192, Golden @ 175, Ximines @ 110, Brown @ 93, Harris @ 70 and Brunson @ 2
(*Martinez and Frackrell where the only LBs to log more than 50%, next up was Crowder @ 36.94%)

D.B.s Ryan @ 1051, Bradberry @ 1021, Peppers @ 911, Love @ 721, Yiadom @ 633, Holmes @ 442, Lewis @ 271, Mckinny @ 210, Ballantine @ 107, Colbert @ 104, Ebner @ 39, Harper @ 37, Hartage @ 21, Chandler @ 3.

On average there was 2.8 DL, 3.1 LBs and 5.1 DBs on the field per play.

*Martinez, Ryan and Bradberry (all free agents last year) where on field for more than 93% plays.

Last year FA haul was a homerun

I hope we get same results from this years group

Ryan, Peppers and McKinney will be fun to watch.

Also, LB's outside Martinez were limited be it for talent, youth, or injury. The new guys they brought in should help.
Bradberry’s percentage is closer to 100.

I think just about all of the snaps he missed were in the game he had to sit out because he violated COVID protocols and got exposed.
I'm surprised
mittenedman : 4/16/2021 11:48 am : link
Ballentine got 107 snaps. I don't even remember him playing D.
To be precise, Bradberry was at 100% in 12 games.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/16/2021 12:05 pm : link
97 and 99 in the two Dallas games, and 96 at Baltimore. The only time he missed more than three plays on defense was against the Browns: Bradberry had to sit out, and Baker Mayfield (27-32-297-2-0) had his pick of open receivers all night.
Thanks for putting this together

Mike. Good stuff. These snap counts support my view that LB (inside or outside) is not as dire a situation as some believe. This is the defensive lineup I am envisioning. I see a lot of 3-3-5 and 3-2-6 formations:

D-Line: LW, Shelton, Dex (Backups: Johnson, BJ Hill, McIntosh/draft pick)

Secondary: Bradberry, Jackson, Peppers, Ryan, McKinnie (take a LB away and add Holmes depending on opponent and game situation. Backups Yiadom and Love).

Middle Linebacker: Martinez

Then pick two from this list based on down and distance to fill the other 2 LB spots: Anderson, Odenigbo, Carter, Ximines, Coughlin, Cam Brown, Crowder, Brunson)

Forgot Ragland and potentially Lalos. We have 11 LB’s right now on a team that based on Graham’s scheme last year only lines up 3 LB’s on average.

Point is, I’d like to see us invest the first two rounds on offense. We need another receiver and another Guard more than an Edge IMO anyway.
With Mayo, Frackwell and Golden gone
WillieYoung : 4/16/2021 12:52 pm : link
That's nearly 975 snaps for Parsons.

They basically replaced Fackrell and Golden with Odenigbo and Anderson who are similar players. Ragland is the Mayo replacement. And they have a whole bunch of second year LB’s as well.

You know, I actually made a 3-3-5 defense before Shelton and Jackson were signed, with Lawrence or Johnson at the nose, Hill at the other end spot opposite Williams, and Yiadom at the other corner opposite Bradberry. Got lambasted because it looked soft against the run.
goes to show you why Surtain would be a big get

I’m honestly kind of confused about the Surtain desire. Not because he isn’t a terrific player, but I don’t know how we can get that many secondary players on the field at one time.

Bradberry and Jackson will be 1-2 at CB, their salaries make that clear. Ryan and Peppers will be on the field almost every down. And McKinnie looked really strong when he came in late in the season. So that’s 5 DB’s you basically want in the game at all times. Then when you look at the bench you have Holmes who looked really good in his rookie year and is an ideal slot corner. Love and Yiadom are your depth players, they are probably the best #4 and #5 CB’s in the league. And Ryan and Love can also play Safety.

Unless we are putting 6 DB’s out there on a regular basis I just don’t see how you would get the value out of Surtain that you need for a top 15 pick. I would feel differently if Bradberry or Jackson were entering the last year of their contracts and we needed to have a replacement since we couldn’t afford both. But we have Bradberry for 2 more years and Jackson for 3 and they are both relatively young players.

How’s Jackson’s knee?
If his knee was bad he wouldn’t
eric2425ny : 4/16/2021 2:20 pm : link
have gotten that contract. And if his knee is bad and they gave him that deal then they are morons. Drafting a CB for depth at #11 seems like a bad move to me.
Surtain would be a team building move
UConn4523 : 4/16/2021 2:36 pm : link
as atleast 1 of the DB's won't be on the roster next year in all liklihood, probably more. Whether that's injury, being cut, etc is anyones guess but we definitively need atleast 7 or 8 DB's in this scheme, some with interchangeable duties.

Bradberry
Jackson
Surtain
Holmes
Yiadom

Peppers (does he get extended?)
McKinney
Ryan
Love

I agree in terms of the long term strategy. It would be rough seeing Surtain or one of the safeties play a low snap count throughout 2021 though. I just want the team to get the biggest bang for their buck at 11 as they possibly can because this division is very winnable.
I don't disagree
UConn4523 : 4/16/2021 3:14 pm : link
but injuries are 100% happening so Surtain likely plays a lot. I get wanting the biggest possible impact for 2021, so i'm certainly open to other players, but I wouldn't be disappointed with Surtain at all. We can have an elite level secondary and possibly a top 5 defense - that's significant.
Could we get Surtain in the first round and
Angel Eyes : 4/16/2021 3:17 pm : link
an edge rusher in the second or third round who can play on passing downs in a nickel defense?
It takes too long to develop a CB
giantBCP : 4/16/2021 3:26 pm : link
and that’s one of the reasons why I think we went for Jackson in FA as opposed to drafting a CB at 11. We seem to be in “all in” mode, and I think that we’ll see a player drafted that will be able to make an impact right away. I’m thinking WR or EDGE is likely.

That’s my line of thinking as well. I still think our WR corps needs work.

I look at our receiving corps kind of how I looked at our corners before we signed Jackson:

Golladay = Bradberry
Shepard = Holmes
Slayton = Yiadom/Love

Drafting a player like Smith or Waddle would be the comparable to adding Adoree Jackson at CB2.
