@NFLDraftBites
It’s fun when you evaluate a player for multiple yrs and obviously every team has been too. Josh Palmer WR Tennessee is a guy I know #Giants love. And are discussing internally where they can get the player.
Palmer is one of the more underrated WR prospects in the NFL Draft. Out of all the WRs Patrick Surtain II went up against last year, Palmer gave him the most fits. Palmer also went against Jaycee Horn and South Carolina and did well (6 catches; 85 yards; one TD), and against the two Georgia CBs (two TD grabs). I'd love to take a shot at him in the 4th round.
Forbes also tweeted:
Chad Forbes
@NFLDraftBites
For #Giants there’s 4 Guard Fits for Day 2 that fit very well. And provide rational for passing on Rashawn Slater if available at 11 for preferred edge rusher.
Aaron Banks ND
Wyatt Davis Ohio St
Trey Smith Tennessee
Robert Hainsey ND
All 4 scheme fits...
He's really really good though. Dominated the senior bowl. He'll be a steal.
He didn't produce well at UTenn (though they had shoddy QB play) and is not a plus athlete. I'm not sure what his 40 time is, but he doesn't separate from CBs.
Interesting you say that since I think Waddle will be a bust
Quote:
Because of the garbage offense he was in. Wouldn’t be surprised if they took him in the 3rd round. If Waddle is there at 11 the Giants take him if not they’re not taking a WR. I know some of you are enamored with Devonta Smith but I think he’s going to be a bust and could potentially fall in this draft.
Interesting you say that since I think Waddle will be a bust
I think Waddle is the safest WR in this draft behind Chase. Just my opinion obviously. I love how people are citing injury concerns over Waddle. He broke his ankle. It wasn’t a knee. In regards to Smith, go find me a great WR that is 174 pounds. You’re going to have a very tough time.

Marvin Harrison, Isaac Bruce, desean Jackson, Robbie Anderson. That was pretty easy

Marvin Harrison was probably that weight for most of his career. Ditto Desean Jackson. Waddle was clearly not the same WR after his injury and even though it was his ankle not his knee there is no guarantee that he ever gets back to being the same receiver that he was. Waddle may have had more YPC, but I would argue that Smith was the better WR prior to the injury.
Really? Who had us taking Thomas? Who had us taking Jones? What is our pick this year?

Uhh everyone knew we liked Thomas, everyone knew we liked Jones (people just couldn’t believe we would take him at 6), everyone knew we were taking saquon. And our pick this year is Smith if he’s there.

You just picked 4 WRs in what? A 20 year radius? Harrison was 179, Issac Bruce was almost 190, Jackson is a legit comparison, and Anderson is 190 pounds as well. I wouldn’t be happy with a Jackson career with the #11 pick. Again, just my opinion.

Marvin Harrison played closer to 180 and Smith plays closer to 170. Smith even said he was 170. Marvin Harrison also had one of the best QBs ever throwing him the ball. The odds of a 170 pound WR being dominant are very low in my mind.
Had a great week of practice at Senior Bowl and scored a TD in the game.
Would love him on the Giants. One final commen: had only 4 dropped passes in his career at Tenn.

I named 2 HOF receivers and 2 others without doing any research. Anderson is 6’3 so obviously he’s heavier. Smith can obviously add some weight, but the guy played 4 years in the SEC against NFL caliber competition and put up absurd numbers. I love waddle too, he’s my second choice, but Smith is the prize.

Completely false. Any of the top tackles were linked to us. So, you admit that nobody knew we were taking Jones at 6 but insist everyone knew our picks. Makes no sense. There is a difference between people making assumptions on who we like and what actually happens.

Also yes, everyone knew we wanted Jones, again anyone on this board can attest. There’s a difference between people making assumptions and hearing “The Giants love this guy”. Pointless argument, we are talking about 4 pounds difference between an NFL vet and a 21 year old rookie. That’s fine if you prefer waddle, I think he will be a stud too, I just love Smith and think he’s going to the better of the two

I don’t think it’s pointless because Harrison is obviously what you would want if we drafted Smith. I just don’t like the odds of that. My feeling is that he will not be able to get off press coverage at this level and with the Giants OL problems that is not a good combination for success.

2nd round picks are high enough picks with good enough talent to possibly consider them day one starters or close to it. How much more do we need with what we have at the moment. Even if they take a year we have guys who can start this year and give them time to develop. Slater is an overdraft given what we have and what we can get instead at 11.

Let's see: Mark Duper, Mark Clayton, Stephen "Touchdown Maker" Baker, Marvin Harrison, Don Beebe, just to name a few. Steve Largent wasn't much more than 174 lbs.

I had to reacquaint myself with the injury....it was indeed a high ankle sprain along with a fracture. Translated, no big whoop. Waddle would be fine with me. I thought it was a more involved fracture.
Still it was against Surtain and he beat him pretty good in that TD. It's just one play but it was big play for sure.
+1

There's more to it than weight. Some of those guys were shorter and stockier.Smith is a 6 foot toothpick. You really have to watch him and see how easy he goes down at times.

Show me where it was known that Gettleman loved Thomas. The only thing that was out there was Sy saying based on past linemen that Gettleman drafted Thomas fit that profile.
“ The New York Giants have reportedly made it known that Thomas is their preferred tackle in this class and they have the fourth overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.” Link - ( New Window )
So, your argument is one webiste twisting what was written by Pat Leonard wrote which was saying there was buzz around 4 players when the Giants had the 4th pick in the draft? Lol. Come on. Referenced article in your link - ( New Window )
Wow you are really digging deep to disprove something that EVERYONE knew. A lot of people hoped it wasn’t true, but it indeed was.
No one had thomas pegged at 4....
Jones and Barkley sure, I guess (wasn't hard to connect the dots on either)..but I don't think anyone had Lawrence or the move up for Baker either.
The leaks are far better since the purge of staff members over the last year's.
A few days out a few select reports came out tying them directly to Thomas.
And that’s all she wrote...

Not to mention the posted article ends with this:
So even if that he was the favored tackle, no one "knew" he was the pick.
Plus, DG has had the #2, #6, and #4 pick. The closer you are to the top, the more likely it is for a correct rumor to be out there. The least surprising of the three was the #2 and the most surprising was the #6. Funny how it works out that way.

No. It was reported a few days earlier.
No. It was reported a few days earlier.
What was reported? The Thomas pick?
So not "a month before" like was claimed here, or even two weeks before like when the posted article was written.

Let's see: Mark Duper, Mark Clayton, Stephen "Touchdown Maker" Baker, Marvin Harrison, Don Beebe, just to name a few. Steve Largent wasn't much more than 174 lbs.
There's more to it than weight. Some of those guys were shorter and stockier.Smith is a 6 foot toothpick. You really have to watch him and see how easy he goes down at times.

It was reported we were taking any one of like 4 different players. One of the reports is bound to be correct.
If the Giants draft any one of these guys i can claim that Gettleman telegraphed it and it was known the whole time.
It's funny how I have listened and read many of the beat reporters as well as people on here throw many names out that the giants are targeting. They will all claim they knew who the giants were drafting after whoever gets drafted.
20/20 hindsight is an amazing thing

The guy that was reported on a bunch was Wirfs. No one else was really close. At the end you heard a few catch on to Thomas .

Again, up until the last week the only thing that was out there was the Giants going OT, and no definitive on which one although probably Wirfs name was tossed out the most. But that was just people guessing as they would always add another name in as well to hedge.
The last few days you had guys saying Thomas and Thomas only.

Just get drunk at his local watering hole and tell everyone who he loves in the draft? So far every 1st round pick he’s had has been rumored correctly a month before the draft.
Correction, everybody had us taking Thomas about a week before the draft. Prior to that the names associated with the Giants were Wills and Wirfs.
Very careless post.
A week before the draft is still a lifetime for other teams to plan around. Sorry for the careless post, I truly hope you were able to sleep last night after I threw that wrench in your life.

Don't mean to pile on, but I just think it's still being exaggerated how early (even a week out) and how well-known it was that Thomas was the pick. I mean, here's the final mock draft summary that giants.com ran last year on the day of the draft. Admittedly, they weren't all super up-to-date, but there are a decent number of listings from a day or two before the draft (which started 4/23).
I just did a quick google search for "final mock draft 2020 april 22" and in the top 10 results, 8 had Wirfs and 2 had Wills going to the Giants.

I have no idea where this narrative started that everyone knew we were taking Thomas. It was a bit of a surprise to many here, considering all the insiders and how deep I imagine you follow the team if you are on here. In fact, even the day of I think it was Wirfs who most of us had as lead horse, but AT's name was also thrown out because of his ability to play LT.

Ok maybe the obviousness of the Thomas pick was exaggerated, but it was still widely rumored after that Leonard article. The point of my initial post was simply that the giants have been notoriously bad at hiding who they like. This all came from listening to a podcast with betting experts who claim when betting the on the draft that the giants have been the easiest to predict.
acrobatic talent.
If he could combine that with some separation talent, he'd be a pretty high draft pick.

Clearly not the same receiver after? I love this line. Now, who knows if Waddle will be better than Smith long-term. I personally like Smith. But let's put this in perspective. This idea that Waddle wasn't as good in the national championship game is foolish. He broke his ankle on Oct. 24 and had surgery on Oct. 26. Now, you can't start serious rehab for 6 to 8 weeks after the surgery.
So that takes him to almost Xmas. That gave him, what, 18 to 20 days of serious rehab to get ready for the championship game. And you don't do rehab every day. He wasn't cleared to practice until Jan. 5, six days before the game. I marvel at what some people expect. Try not using the muscles in one leg for six weeks and then try running at full speed. In today's climate, when so many college players opt not to play in bowl games for fear of injury, I give the guy a whole lot of credit for not only being willing to try to get back for the game, but to make it back. Anyone who thinks he could have been 100 percent for that game is crazy.
Compare Waddle to Nick Bosa, who suffered a core muscle injury in mid September his last year and had surgery. Three weeks later he decided not to try to come back and instead worked toward training for the draft. His recovery was expected to be 10 to 12 weeks. That puts him on the same timeline as Waddle. Bosa finally took part in some of the combine events in early March, nearly two months past the time Waddle was on the field playing. Then he skipped OSU's pro day.
So let's stop this "Waddle clearly wasn't the same" after the injury. I say the guy proved just how tough he is.
Yeah I am calling high grade bullshit. No one “knew”’fuck all about Daniel jones or dexter Lawrence or even Thomas. And just because every swinging dick and his sister throws 100 guesses out there doesn’t mean there were leaks! Enough already. For 3 months everyone guesses and stabs at players based on simple logic. Of course there will be some correct guesses!
Just stop already.

Marvin Harrison, Isaac Bruce, desean Jackson, Robbie Anderson. That was pretty easy
Don’t forget Chad Johnson

We can play this game all day but no one has the energy to chase down the countless articles linking nyg to any other player not named Thomas.
Save it. There are 100s of articles linking teams to all sorts of players day in day out. You found a few that that fit the agenda. Bravo.
Also, to play devil’s advocate, there’s zero proof that leaks are even detrimental or completely unavoidable. When you play poker you do have to show your cards at some point. George young did it. Accorsi did it. Ozzie newsome did it. Stop already.

Word around the league is Wirfs is the Giants' preference, ahead of the others in this tightly bunched group of the top four tackles.
Enough.
Or do you want more?
This gem was a mere 10 days or so prior to the draft.

Fuck OL. Who needs tackles? We want the linebacker!
Giants will pick Simmons! - ( New Window )
"As for Gettleman's draft approach, one source emphasized the GM’s desire to maximize upside over playing it safe. The upside call at four is likely Clemson's Isaiah Simmons.
I’m sure the selective vision in these parts is kicking in right about now.
You’re welcome.

Oh man, take it easy pal. Just got back from my Sunday stroll.
It was Wills, Thomas, Becton, Okudah if he fell, Wirfs, and Simmons. And nobody really know who the pick would be.
BULLSHIT - ( New Window )
Why are you so angry about this? It's a discussion board and I conceded a compelling argument was made against my Thomas post. I vividly recalled uproar on the site about the Giants being linked to Thomas days/weeks before the draft and those rumors turned out to be true. Yes, there were many other rumors as there always are but I focused on the one from a NY Giants insider which turned out to be correct.
Ok maybe the obviousness of the Thomas pick was exaggerated, but it was still widely rumored after that Leonard article. Well, now that you've done your walking penance... ;-)
Honestly, like I alluded to before, I would imagine the opinion of those betting experts is as much a function of how bad the Giants have been lately and how high their picks have been as anything else - at least in DG's drafts anyway. It's got to be easier to predict a team's picks when their average draft position is #4 compared to say somewhere in the teens, right? They may have accounted for that, but I wonder.
Quote:
It was obviously going to be an OT based on what the roster situation was and DG comments pre-draft. Beats were bouncing all over which OT they liked best for a month or so, and added some hedges to a few of the defensive guys but that really had no substance. The logical stories tied them to Thomas because he was most experienced at Left Tackle and Giants knew Solder wasn’t lasting much longer.
A few days out a few select reports came out tying them directly to Thomas.

They obviously weren't credible leaks if they said it was Wirfs and Becton, were they? You have been around the block long enough to differentiate articles vs inside info.
Imv, there were two types of less than credible reports going on last year relative to NYG. One was anything that linked the Giants to any player that wasn't an OT, as it was always going to be a Tackle the moment free agency ended. And two was that the beats/others truly knew which OT the Giants liked best, because the answer was they liked several of them and were actually more interested in a short trade down where they could get one of them and also pick up some extra pick(s).
However, they either didn't like the offers or didn't get any so they stayed at #4 and took the OT that had the most experience at playing Left Tackle which was going to be a huge need sooner vs later and because they are arguably more valuable. Nothing more...

I’m fine, I am taking it easy. I’m on my couch. This leak crap is one of the most parroted nonstop takes around here and has been for years. I’ll take it easy when people put this one to bed, which isn’t likely.
I could keep going. It’s even more enjoyable to see the best drafting teams like the Saints have reporters actually “leak” the real pick, days in advance. But I’ll spare you for now.
Whatever, it’s been proven time and time again that all this shit is made up noise. All one has to do is pay attention to everything, not just the giants. See what you want to see. If I tell you it’s gonna rain tomorrow and it does it doesn’t make me a fricking meteorologist.
