Beat the Wolves like 10 days ago. Let's slow down the coronation. They have been feasting on some bad teams/teams missing guys. The one impressive win was that absurd comeback vs. Denver.
Who is the last title team to win without a top 5 NBA player?
2013-14 Spurs?
Kawhi, Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, Splitter...
Kawhi wasn't Top 5 or even Top 10 back then.
2013-2014 Spurs had 5 players with a PER 18.7 or greater. The Knicks have 1 (Randle). They had 5 players with 2+ VORP, the Knicks again have 1. So yeah, if the Knicks add 3 more players of the quality of Julius Randle then sure we'd be talking about them as that level of team. They will not be there with RJ Barrett simply "getting better".
the Knicks are on track to be contenders with Randle/Barrett as their top 2 then I assume people think New Orleans is going to be contending for a title shortly? Zion/Ingram vs. Zion/Barrett

Julius and RJ are no the 1-2 on a true title contender unless RJ becomes a true no. 1 scoring threat which feels unlikely.
But to answer your question, this Pelicans roster really is great on paper. It's really surprising to me that they aren't better. Their bench stinks but 1-5 they're really solid.
I think the Knicks could field a competitive team for the next 5+ years if they added a superstar to the lineup that they have now.
But let's be honest here. If the front office is interested in preserving that cap space for 2022, then this team will be overhauled in the offseason and might not be as competitive as it is this year, next year.
This offseason we stand to lose:
Derrick Rose
Alec Burks
Elfrid Payton (yay)
Nerlens Noel
Reggie Bullock
Frank Ntilikina
Say what you want about some of those players, that represents 5 of our top 10 players.
the Knicks don't steal Lonzo (apparently it's floating around NO is willing to go over 20 despite reports otherwise, I guess we will see, also see if the Bulls do something nutty), I'd speak to Lowry short term but I really think McConnell would be a very solid addition. The downside to him is he doesn't even bother shooting the 3 ball but he's a leader on the court and a very good defensive player. I think the Knicks are now to the point that marginal upgrades are worth pursuing if the price is right.
8 and 7 with 2 steals. I want a big-time PG as much as the next guy but this isn't last off-season. Any option better than what they have should be considered if it doesn't hold them back from adding future "better" players.
may miss the remainder of the season with a knee issue. Unless he does something silly like 1 year with a team option 2nd year I'm passing on him hard.

I am bringing back, Rose, Burks and Noel..
Would love Bullock back as well but i think they try and upgrade the starting back court..
McConnell would be fine in a 20 minute per night type role
However this team needs a huge upgrade at starting pg. This off season L.Rose and co are truly on the clock. They need to land a really good pg. No excuses. I'm still sticking by it- I love IQ as much as you guys and he's really fun to watch, but I really feel this team would be better off with Malachi Flynn. Oh well that's neither here nor there.

No disagreement here. I see McConnell as an addition that makes the roster better. Not "the answer" at PG. Nothing against IQ at all but I think he's Lou Williams 2.0, long one of the most underrated players in the league.

Lebron didn't win his first title until he was 27.
Zion is 20 years old, Lonzo is 23, Ingram is 23, if they continue to get better, develop physically and understand the game. You can't see those 3 competing for a title?
The current top 10 players in the league is going to look a lot different in 4 years.
Look at the age of Curry, Klay, lebron, CP3, KD, Dame, Kawhi.
I bet he does opt out. Even if its to squeeze another year or 2 out of Phoenix. But he has all the leverage now and why risk another season of a possible injury or fallen off? He will be coming off 2 all nba level years and has the Suns in their best postion in a very long time.
but Ball looked pretty bad against the Knicks. I personally don't think he's the answer to the PG problem we find ourselves in.
I'd be happier giving Lowry or Paul or whoever a big deal for 2 years. Even though Ball is younger, I don't know that he has the court vision that they do.

In fairness, Lonzo has been dealing with a hip issue for about a month now (not considered serious) so I wouldn't read too much into his play.

Lonzo also isnt being used as a point guard, he is being used as a 3 and d guy
See a 4th best player on a championship team. Not sure if he is the cats meow at PG. I know we had a great year and to use all our $ for average is tough.

They have roughly 60 million to spend. Lonzo wouldn't come close to "all" of their cap room.
2021 PG's Lonzo, Paul (if he opts out), Conley (expected to remain in Utah), Dragic (turning 36), Schroder (turned down 84 million from LAL), Dinwiddie coming off a torn acl
2022
Rozier, Smart, Rubio, Curry (he'll be 34 and c'mon lol) and then RFA Doncic, Young, Sexton, SGA, all almost certainly will have any sheets matched by their teams.

If Rose could play 30-34 minutes best bet would be to package picks to move up and pick one of the top 4 pgs
Cade Cunningham – 6-8 – Oklahoma St.
Jalen Suggs – 6-4 – Gonzaga.
Davion Mitchell – 6-2 – Baylor.
Josh Giddey – 6-8 – Australia.
And let them split time with Rose/Quickley.
is the guy I most want them to avoid. He's "confirmed" mediocre at this point and no reason he'll be cheap. I like him far less than adding a Lowry for 2 years, and far less than spending big on a Lonzo.

Davion Mitchell looked freakin awesome to me in the tournament, looked like a polished professional and a badass competition every second he was out there— sign me up for him, I think he’d fit perfectly in with this Knicks squad. Not to mention coming from Baylor he’s already be taught how to play aggressive D and I’m sure Thibs would love him. He could fall simply because Cunningham and Suggs have gotten and will get all the attention. Mitchell considering he’s 6’2” looks like he’s built like a truck too. Screw Ball, I’m starting to like this idea more and more by the second

He should go between 8th to 12tg pick.
I could see the Knicks falling in love with him.
Hopefully Dallas loses in the play-in. With 4 picks this year we can package them to move up.
I think Mitchell will go at the bottom of the top 10
Part of me feels like we may miss Payton when he’s gone though. I think Rose does best coming off the bench and preserving his body — and I don’t think Quickley or Mitchell (or whoever the rookie we target) would be quite ready to be the full starter yet in 2022. Need another vet who can distribute and simply hold down the fort when needed, preferably better than Payton of course (which seemingly shouldn’t be hard to find but again Payton could be one of those dudes we end up missing more than we’d like to admit)
are concerned with Tyler Herro's off court pursuit of fame lolz
Shocked that Riley didn't dump him and whoever else was necessary to get Harden and keep him out of Brooklyn. I know they made the Finals last year, but it was a bit of a bubble fluke. Harden/Butler/Bam pulls Miami even with anyone in the league.

I really dont like the idea of paying big bucks for Lonzo. I really dont. I understand he has improved his shooting a bit. I also get he isnt being used the way he should, but why is that? Why is a pass first PG whocant shoot very well not being allowed to run the point but is starting. Seems fucking weird. Plus, that defensive lapse last night was pretty freaking bad.
I think the move this year is to move up for a PG. We almost have to. I would rather roll the dice on a rookie and deal with that contract than Ball. Yes I understand he has been out, but as someone noted in the game thread, the Knicks were GIVING him wide open looks from 3 and he bricked most of them. Plus I think he is ugly.

You lost me with your first sentence, Haha.
We may miss him as a scorer, but not as a passer thats for sure.
I want Lonzo. I think he'd be a great fit. I don't know what was going on with him yesterday. Partying too late Saturday? I want no piece of Schroder. If he's interested, Paul would be intriguing, though he's getting long in the tooth. That said, look @ what he's doing in Phoenix. Wherever he goes, the team goes up a level.
But you guys watch Last Chance U (basketball) on Netflix? I'm a few episodes in and it's really good. Highly recommend.
Buddy said the same. I haven't gotten around to it, but while. Wife controls the Netflix downstairs & we started 'Emily in Paris' on Saturday night. For the love of God, just take me out back & put me out of my misery.

For 20 per, I would hope he would do more than 2 FGs when the opponent isnt playing any defense on you.
Chopper, no argument here about yesterday. He was a no show. But I'm taking the body of the work. And let's see how much he's going to get. The thing that sucks is that it's a pretty weak free agent market so some guys are going to get absurd contracts similar to the summer '16.

I mentioned this when the Knicks played the heat, he is not well liked in the locker room but Butler loves him, he is protected by Butler..

Love the idea of Rose/Quickley/Mitchell splitting the minutes at PG. plus maybe another serviceable vet just for depth/insurance.
