This exercise is intended to identify the players on the 90 man roster who are locks or very likely to make the final 53, and thereby identify how many spots are available for rookies, udfas, and additional free agents. Defense is addressed in a previous thread.
Quarterbacks: (2) Jones, Glennon
Running Backs: (2) Barkley, Booker
Tight Ends: (3) Engram, Rudolph, Toilolo
Wide Receivers: (4) Golladay, Sheperd, Slayton, Ross
Offensive Linemen: (7) Thomas, Lemieux, Gates, Hernandez, Peart, Solder, Fulton
Total: (18) Far fewer locks than for the defense (22) that we looked at yesterday. If 25 offensive players on the 53, that leaves 7 spots on offense.
Veteran depth signings and young backup carryovers from last year that will be competing for spots that may be considered likely or possibly include:
FB: Penny
TE: Smith
WR: Pettis, Board (Pettis very likely if they carry 6 or more WRs and only draft 1)
OL: Harrison, Murphy and Slade (maybe 1 of these to be OL # 8)
I expect at least one wide receiver and OL early in the draft, with another pick at some point on a RB and/or TE.
So if we draft a WR and OL early, a RB late, and use one or two draft picks on defensive players, what would you use the other pick on, and which of the carryovers from last year make the roster?
What do you think?
I like them too. How many WRs do you think we'll keep on the 53?
And btw, I think teams can still protect 4 players from their practice squads, but they have to clear waivers to get the PS. Does that sound right? If so, maybe that is where some of these WRs start the season?
Sills missing the entire season was a huge disappointment. He impressed the coaching staff with his performance in camp and he would have received a lot of playing time to cement a roster spot. I would be shocked if the Giants don’t draft a WR so Sills will be competing with Pettis for the final spot assuming the Giants keep 6 WR’s.
I hope that the Giants add a TE in the draft. Ideally Tommy Tremble will fall to them in round 4. He’s a good blocker already plus he was underutilized in college as a receiver. The staff will like his versatility as he can line up inline or as an H-back. Tremble could eliminate the need to carry a FB.
Harrison also as there is no other experienced center.
1. Will the Giants select an interior lineman(linemen) in the draft? As of now the only backup lineman that’s a lock is Nate Solder. Fulton, Murphy, Harrison, Barton, Wiggins, and Slade will be competing for 3-4 spots along with draft picks and several UDFA’s. If Murphy can impress enough at center then he will win a backup spot since he can also play tackle in a pinch.
2. Can Fulton impress at center? Fulton has starting experience at center and he is battling Harrison, and possibly Kyle Murphy, for the primary backup job. I don’t think that the Giants will keep both Harrison and Fulton so whoever looks better at center will probably win the roster spot. I think the Giants want a legit starting option at center in the event that the Giants are forced to move Gates over to guard or tackle in the event of injury.
WR
RB
DG addressed them sort of in Free Agency, but I expect us to draft at least one of each on Days 2 and 3.
WR (6): Golladay, Shepard, Slayton, Day 1/2 Draft Choice, Ross, Pettis
RB (4): Barkley, Booker, Day 3 draft choice, Penny
TE (4): Rudolph, Engram, Smith, Toilolo
C (2): Gates, Harrison
G (4): Hernandez, Lemuiex, Fulton, Day 2/3 Draft Choice
T (4): Thomas, Peart, Solder, Day 2/3 Draft Choice
Possibly Murphy gets in at guard and the DC goes to practice squad, if he's a day 3.
